A little backstory: There’s a homeless woman named Jeannie who frequents the dumpster in the back of the restaurant. Jeannie: “I need some mayonnaise. Do y’all have any mayonnaise?” Me: “There’s actually a worldwide mayonnaise shortage because of the suicide bomber that ran his car into an Iraqi mayonnaise factory.” (Cue Jeannie bursting into tears.) Happy Birthday Pickle
My Sweet Boy, As I press your marshmallow soft body close to my chest and accept your sloppy kiss and enthusiastic embrace, my heart swells with love. Can it be possible that earth has already circled the sun since we first met? I remember that day, your birthday, with flawless clarity. You surprised us. I didn’t expect you to wait until the predicted arrival, but I also didn’t think you would greet us a little more than three-weeks before that date. Trembling, I strained forward anxious to meet you, my newest love. The tips of my fingers barely touched your dark, matted hair before you were whisked away for measurements. You were so quiet. I feared your silence meant you were not well and I kept asking your daddy if he could see you. He and the nurses told me that you were perf

      Obama's Wright pickle
This is one of those scandals that doesn't need explanation and Republicans shouldn't try, but let me speculate on the political effects: It may not wound Obama mortally, but it will knock him down a peg. Why? Either he doesn't believe this stuff, and he's, therefore, insincere, attending the church for 20 years out of some racial solidarity thing- the blackest church I could find- or to ingratiate himself with the community he "organized; or he sympathizes with racial Christianity in which case he's nearly disqualified to be president of a diverse nation, and he's been fooling us with his post racial (OK), post-partisan (always a sham on its face) talk. I don't see a way out of it for Obama. Condemn somebody whom you've praised consistently for 20 years or defend a person far out of th

The Confession of the Green Pickle Martian
It was sometime in the very early eighties, in that time when, if you lived in the suburbs, the seventies still hadn't ended. I was in grade school - grade four, specifically - and I was about as awkward as they come at that age: tall and skinny and shy and cursed with a coarse mass of wavy dirty-blonde hair that my mother tried to keep tamed in pigtails that looked more like rough shipping rope

      Yodeling Pickle
Maybe the Christmas pickle ornament isn’t for you.  I admit it isn’t for everyone.    Well if you don’t like the Christmas pickle maybe you will like the yodeling pickle. You read that right a yodeling pickle. The plastic pickle has button.  As you have probably guessed you press the button and the pickle will yodel like a Swiss mountaineer.  Nothing says Merry Christmas like a yodeling pickle.

      Christmas Pickle Ornament
I have a pickle ornament on my tree.  I don’t have any kids to search for it but I like the idea of hanging a pickle from my Christmas Tree.  The Christmas pickle is supposed to have originated in Germany.  As the story goes the pickle was the last ornament placed on the Christmas Tree. On the day the gifts were opened the child that found the pickle ornament was given another special gift. There is some debate around the origin of that story. I don’t care one way or the other. A cool ornament is a cool ornament. You can check out the Christmas Pickle story here.  If you need your own Christmas pickle ornament just do a google search. There are plenty of places selling them.

After reading all the raving reviews of the products, I went on to read more about the people behind this lovely online store. It turned out that the store was the brainchild of two sisters - Bug (Kim) and Pickle (Nicole), who were also entrepreneurs in a successful and unique spa in Vancouver, Bloom Essentials Spa. I’m honoured to share the story of how these two sisters start their online business… and after you read their story, don’t forget to check out the great range of wholesome body products in the store too! Grammy's Pickle Dish
My mother-in-law has a crocheted bedspread on display in one of her guest bedrooms. It has a story we enjoy telling. A few years ago she was digging through the cedar chest in that room for something she wanted to show me. I don’t think she ever found what it was she was looking for, because she was distracted by something else. In the bottom, wrapped in tissue paper, was a thread crochet project her mother had started about fifty years ago. She died from breast cancer before she was able to finish it. Along with the crochet project was the original spool of crochet thread, still in pristine condition. My mother-in-law is a super talented quilted and knitter, but she admitted crocheting was not her forte. She gave me the crochet project and thread saying I should finish it, maybe for my daughter’s bedroom.I considered myself a novice crocheter then. After much protesting, I accepted the project. Never one to turn down a challenge, I set immediately to work. I took one of the hexago
