The Day in the Life of a Physician
It's really hard to grasp what a doctors life is like day to day. There are people out there that make it sound like your personal life is over once you are a doctor. You will have no time for family, friends, hobbies...nothing. It sounds pretty bleak right? I know that shadowing a doctor is supposed to provide a premed with an honest view of what it is like to be an MD, however, I doubt that any shadowing program allows you to go whom with the doc and see what their life is like outside of the hospital. We are made to believe that their entire life is the hospital when in fact we all know that there are doctors who have happy functional fulfilling lives outside of medicine. I grew up not knowing any doctors. I didn't even have a regular pediatrician because we moved around so much, so my

"Pre-Med Preparation: The Importance of Physician Shadowing"
I've recently been pointed into the direction of two websites worth noting:www.studentdoctor.netwww.mdapplicants.comBoth of them are very good and I recommend anyone who hasn't heard of them before to check them both out. Right now, I want to focus on studentdoctor.net -- specifically, the article found here:Pre-Med Preparation: The Importance of Physician ShadowingIt's a subject that I'm involved with currently (for those who are following along) and actually about to conclude a 45 hour stint this weekend. The article is very well written and very long (and also makes my blog look very ameteur ^^). The article was also very "Pro Shadowing." Here are the key points:It provides you with clinical exposure and stories to talk about in the admission interview.Shadowing allows you to see wh

      Physician Seeks To Educate Parents
"One of the most frustrating things we parents face is a multiplicity of anecdotal information. You could spend your whole life hopscotching from one hope for a cure to another without any real sense of what is going to help."This was said by Dr. Louis Vismara, a cardiologist and parent founder of The MIND Institute. He, like I and so many of us, is in a quandary as to what direction is the right one for our Autistic child. Do we put all our trust in medicine with their prescription drugs? Is detoxification and special diets the answer? Should we take stock in any of the latest studies? All of these ''hopes for a cure" -- is there no end?Figures released in 2007 by the Center for Disease Control shows the prevalence of developmental disorders among 8-year-old children (rate per 1,000)Menta

      Computerized Physician Order Entry
Computerized physician order entry (CPOE) has been a key component of patient safety since the publication of the Institute of medicine’s 1999 report, To Err is Human. This report found that in hospitals throughout the United States, up to 98,000 individuals die each year from preventable mistakes.CPOE is more about clinician acceptance and workflow than it is about software and hardware platforms. But the ability of software and hardware to successfully support the clinician, with dependency and speed, is absolutely critical to support the CPOE effort in a hospital.Seneca Data focuses on providing the best hardware to support CPOE deployments. Our solutions include:- Computers on Wheels (COWS); - Mobile Point of Care Solutions; - Fixed Point of Care Solutions; - Remote Access Solutions.

Physician Recruiter : Tips To getting jobs
Good stuff:One other thing that I strongly recommend is leaving out Objectives and Interests/Hobbies.#1) If you’re a physician and you’ve submitted your CV/Resume you’re probably interested in work as a physician. If that isn’t the case and/or you want to get more specific as to what you’re looking for, the cover letter is a much larger and more appropriate forum to do so.#2) Like it or not, very few employers care if you like SCUBA or reading spy novels or horseback riding or model trains or whatever. There are preconceptions, however, that a lot of people have about activities that are often included in an Interests/Hobbies section of a CV/resume. What if a hiring authority has a negative feeling towards someone/somtehing associated with fly fishing or rock climbing and you’v

Physician Job Search Tips: How To Get A Higher Salary
Whenever a physician is looking for a job, one of the biggest concerns is usually “how can I get the highest salary?”In addition to finding a position in the right location, with the right schedule, work environment and growth potential, it is important for a doctor to earn as much money as possible. More specifically, it is important for a physician to have the highest starting salary as possible when accepting a job offer. Where a doctor’s income starts is a good indicator of how far their salary will grow in the years to come. While negotiating a salary package is often the most intimidating part of the physician job search, it is actually the easiest! The best way to receive more money from an employer is to ask for it.It’s really as simple as that.Once a doctor has undergone the

The importance of grammar for the physician CV and cover letter
Recently I received an email solicitation from a company that I know to be a successful, profitable organization. The email went on and on about why I should employ their services. It touted their past success rates, excellent promotions, etc. But I could only focus on one thing: The name of the company was misspelled in several places throughout the email. I couldn’t believe that an error this grievous had slipped through, but there it was. And because of it, I lost a lot of respect for this organization, despite all the impressive facts and figures they threw at me.If the most intelligent, accomplished physician in the world can’t present a well-written CV and cover letter, none of the accolades will mean much to prospective employers. Remember that the employer reading the resume pr

      Physician Salaries on the Decline
Sources: American Medical Association, American Medical Student Association, Center for Studying Health System Change, New York Times Last year (2006) a story published in the New York Times reported something troubling. Physician salaries are on the decline. the average physician’s net income declined 7 percent from 1995 to 2003, after adjusting for inflation, while incomes of lawyers and other professionals rose by 7 percent during the period. Some people do not think that this decline is a problem at all. Even with the decline, physicians are still making a decent salary. They aren’t going hungry. Maybe they have to forego a brand new S-class, but doctors don’t live off of welfare. And with the ever-increasing costs of healthcare, physician salaries just don’t seem as important. It is very important. This country is headed towards a severe physician shortage. New medical schools are opening up and existing schools are expanding their freshman class sizes i

Age had brought more wrinkles to his face. After taking the medicine, I felt better upon waking up. SiLlYDuMb @ http://sillydumb.com

Choosing the right physician for your child birth
Making the right choice of doctor to deliver your baby is one of the most worrisome things for any newly pregnant woman. But you can reduce that anxiety by dividing your questions into two sets. One list will involve objective factors, the other will cover issues that are not so easy to quantify. You'll want to investigate some immediate practical matters, such as whether a physician you are considering is part of your insurance company's list. You'll want to find out whether the doctor has a good relationship with the hospital you intend to use and whether that hospital accepts the same insurance coverage. As part of that research, you'll want to find out whether billing, co-pay and other issues can be handled simply. You'll want a doctor that is likely to be available when and as you need him or her. The best physician is of no use to you if they can't see you on short notice. Most pregnancies go from start to finish without a hitch, but when a doctor is needed, he or she is gene

A Gay Friendly Physician Needs to Understand Addiction Treatment
There are quite a few physicians that market themselves as “gay friendly” in an effort to attract the LGBT population for the treatment of medical problems. One problem that are sure to see is drug addiction or alcoholism. It becomes their responsibility during any exam to address the drug addiction or alcoholism and offer them a referral to addiction treatment. Most physicians are not trained in addiction medicine and the LGBT community has a higher prevalence of drug addiction and alcoholism then the heterosexual population. This means the gay friendly physician needs to do their best to assess the patient and refer them on for addiction treatment.  The ideal situation is for the patient to continue to see their primary physician after addiction treatment as there will be a great deal of trust and honesty between the two.  This provides for quality healthcare. To find a gay friendly physician or gay friendly doctor, just google the terms or if you feel you suffer from d

A Physician's Guide To The Management Of Paget's Disease Of Bone
What is Pagets Disease? First diagnosed by Sir James Paget in 1877, Pagets disease of bone, or osteitis deformans, is a disease of the osteoclast. It is a focal disorder characterized by excessive osteoclastic bone resorption followed by excessive bone formation, resulting in bone that is architecturally unsound. This can lead to bone pain, bone deformity and skeletal fragility. Pathology of Pagets Disease The initial abnormality in Pagets disease is a dramatic increase in the rate of bone resorption in one or more areas of the skeleton. Pagetic osteoclasts are abnormal approximately five times larger than normal containing an average of 20 nuclei per cell compared with three to four nuclei in normal adult osteoclasts. The osteoblasts, though numerous, are not abnormal. As bone resorption is coupled to bone formation, the rate of bone resorption is matched by a rapid rate of bone formation over time. The new bone is structurally disorganized, however, resulting in an overall decrease i
