Pfizer (PFE) announced this morning that it reached a deal with Indian generic drug maker Ranbaxy Laboratories regarding its popular Lipitor drug. Before the deal was announced, it was widely expected that Ranbaxy would start selling generic Lipitor in the US by June 2011. The deal, however, gives Pfizer five extra months. Ranbaxy will start with generic Lipitor in November 2011.The agreement also

I wrote about wanting to buy some shares of Pfizer (PFE) a while ago. I thought a good entry price would be under $20 a share. Well, the stock has been falling. It hit a new 52 week low today, at the time of writing $18 a share. The reason for the steady decline? As mentioned in that earlier post, Pfizer faces patent expirations on many of its drugs. The drug maker has already lost patents on Norva

Back when the US had an openly acknowledged, offensive chemical-biological-radiological weapons program (as opposed to the secret, illegal one it has now), many pharmaceutical and chemical corporations developed these weapons for the military. Among them was drug giant Pfizer, whose better-known products include Viagra, Zoloft, Rogaine, and Rolaids. In this 1964 report, the company (then ca

There are reports that Pfizer may be in another data breach maelstrom. According to theday.com, an employee lost a laptop, as well as a flash drive, with information on 13,000 employees at the pharmaceutical company. The breach itself occurred about a month ago. There were no details on how the breach itself occurred, nor what type of data protection system was installed.
Pfizer has started settling cases over its Celebrex and Bextra painkillers. More than 3,000 patients have claimed that the drugs caused heart attacks and strokes.
Celebrex, which is in the same class of medicines as Merck’s recalled Vioxx, is Pfizer’s third-best-selling drug. The product is still on the market, and generated $2.3 billion in sales in 2007. Pfizer withdrew Bextra in April 2005 after it was tied to a potentially fatal skin condition.
Pfizer has already reached settlements with three law firms representing more than 200 of the thousands who sued over the drugs. Firms have been offered $40,000 to $50,000 a client to resolve Bextra cases, and as much as $200,000 a client for Celebrex.
There are rumors that the Foundation's Global Health Program may take over the siteThe Ann Arbor Pfizer site remains a hot community topic these days as rumors soar about potential interest in the real estate. One of the top executives of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Tadataka Yamada, made a "passing" comment regarding the Ann Arbor site during a live presentation and webcast last week. Pfizer spokespeople continue to deny any imminent deals on the table. Tadataka's comment was construed as a 'what-if' scenario. Pfizer suggests it will be a long time before they find a suitable replacement for the site. According to Michelle Milford (via mlive.com), on behalf of the deputy director of public affairs for the Gates foundation's Global Heal
Pfizer Inc.'s best-selling cholesterol drug Lipitor failed to slow mental and physical worsening in patients with Alzheimer's disease, a study found. The results clash with previous research that showed high cholesterol raises the risk of Alzheimer's disease, an inexorable loss of memory and function that affects 4.5 million Americans. The study of 640 patients, the largest ever on cholesterol-lowering statin drugs for the condition, found patients fared the same whether they got Lipitor or placebo.

While Merck is wrapping up a series of clinical trials of diet drug Taranabant, which it expects to submit for FDA approval later this year, Pfizer has just launched a new Phase III trial of its diet drug CP-945,598, suggesting it may be considerably further away from being brought to market.

Looking to decrease its dependence on single molecules, such as its $13 billion cholesterol drug Lipitor that is facing a generic onslaught, Pfizer has initiated business units to focus on oncology, biologics and even generics, he said. “We are depending on entrepreneurial parts of the company to make us successful. We are creating units and giving them the authority to be successful,” he said, adding: “It is better to be a patch-work quilt of success than a dinosaur!”On Pfizer’s dependence on Lipitor, he said that it was “too-distracting” to focus on a single molecule. “Last year, for the first time, we earned outside the US than inside,” he said.
Pfizer sought to reassure investors yesterday that the unravelling of its "monolithic" structure would prepare it for the impending expiry of the patent for its blockbuster cholesterol drug Lipitor, worth some $12bn in annual sales.Under pressure from Wall Street to retool Pfizer to boost sales and profit, Jeff Kindler, chief executive, gave a frank assessment of the disruption created by its $90bn Warner-Lambert and $60bn Pharmacia deals since 2000. He provided the most detailed evidence yet of Pfizer's efforts to streamline its operations, change its culture and improve its research and science.
There are speculations the real estate giant may be moving inWith recent confirmation that Cleveland based Forest City Enterprises toured the Ann Arbor Pfizer plant last year, many are wondering if the site has found a new owner. Forest City has played down the visit suggesting they look at properties all over the country, all the time. They make no commitment to even having serious interest in the property. However, the Forest City Science and Technology division previously completed an overhaul on the 20-acre Skokie Illinois Pfizer site which will almost double the amount of jobs lost - so they are no stranger to Pfizer properties. Last year Pfizer announced plans to close shop and hired The Stauback Company to market and sell the property. It's not likely o
Pharmaceutical revenue from Pfizer’s U.S. operations decreased last year as competition in the cholesterol market contributed to an 8 percent decline in revenues for the firm’s flagship product Lipitor. The company’s $48.6 billion 2007 total revenue was 1 percent better than its 2006 revenue of $48.4 billion.
Although Vytorin cut levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol far more than Merck's older Zocor tablet in the study, both drugs failed to prevent further buildup of fatty plaque in the carotid artery during the two-year study."It allows us to make our case the way we've been making it, and quite frankly gives it more teeth in terms of the clinical impact of our product," Pfizer Chief Financial Officer Frank D'Amelio told Reuters in an interview.
U.S. patent officials have initially rejected claims for the basic patent on Pfizer Inc's (PFE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) blockbuster Lipitor cholesterol treatment, although the drug maker said on Monday it remained confident the patent would ultimately be upheld. The patent, which expires in March 2010, will remain valid and enforceable while U.S. officials re-examine it, a process that could take as long as a few years, Pfizer said, allowing the company to maintain its grip on the product over that time.
NEW YORK — Patients treated with Pfizer Inc.'s cholesterol drug Lipitor were significantly less likely to have a heart attack than those treated with generic Zocor, according to a Pfizer-funded study published Friday in Clinical Therapeutics Journal.New users of cholesterol-lowering drugs, without heart-related diseases, who took Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) had a significantly lower relative risk of a heart attack compared with patients who took the generic, also known as simvastatin, according to the study results.

The overall quarterly revenue for Pfizer, the world’s largest global research-based biomedical and pharmaceutical company, fell 2.4 percent to $12 billion, and third-quarter net income dropped 77%. Myself and Team366 co-founder, Eric Pointer, were interviewed recently regarding the aggregate impact of the arrival of Google and departure of Pfizer. As the summer of 2007 appears to be over, with the exception of the temperatures (mid 70’s in the middle of October? C’mon!), Pfizer is down to a skeleton crew at their Plymouth Road facility. Google, just today, announced that their corporate earnings were up 46%. When much of their revenue is gotten through paid, online advertising, that makes the Google Adwords division decision to come to Ann Arbor seem particularly fortuitous for the region.
Part one of a three part series on the effects of the Google/Pfizer moves can be found here. While this article doesn’t cover real estate solely, it goes a long way to touch on many of the areas of the Ann Arbor area effected by these corporate moves.

economictimes.indiatimes.comLONDON: Pfizer Inc, the world's largest drugmaker, said on Monday the European Commission had approved its AIDS drug Celsentri, the first in a new class of oral HIV medicines. The drug, which is known generically as maraviroc and as Selzentry in the US, is the first designed to keep the HIV virus that causes AIDS from entering healthy immune cells. Older AIDS medicines attack the virus itself. It works by blocking the CCR5 co-receptor that serves as a main doorway for the HIV virus into immune cells. The green light from the European authorities had been expected after a panel of EU experts recommended the product in July. The medicine was also cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration last month.Celsentri is approved for use in patients who have tried other medicines and for whom a diagnostic test has confirmed their HIV strain is linked to the CCR5 receptor.New York-based Pfizer is counting on new medicines such as Celsentri to help drive profits as sev
A security guard in this dusty Nigerian city is living with tragedy -- a 14-year-old son whose dazed eyes, slow speech and uneven gait signal brain damage. Mustapha Mohammed says he knows who to blame. New York-based Pfizer is facing four court cases -- two filed by the Nigerian government and two by officials in the northern Nigerian state where Mohammed lives -- over a decade-old drug study that included Mohammed's son.
The company, which denies any wrongdoing, is accused of using a 1996 meningitis epidemic to push through a sloppily managed drug study that contributed to death in some and infirmities in others.

Stocks: (PFE)(BMY)With generics threatening revenue and margins at most of the Big Pharma companies, Novartis has decided to move a good portion of its R&D to China to tap the low-cost labor pool. If generics are going to eat into revenue, why not drop the future expenses of developing new drugs. Novartis will start with an initial investment of $100 million.China is also a huge market for selling drugs. Pharmaceutical sales there rose 11% last year to $11.7 billion.Over the last two years, the stocks in companies like Bristol-Myers and Pfizer have substantially underperformed the S&P 500. While the S&P is up 20% over that period, BMY shares are up less than 5% and PFE is off 10%. It may get worse before its gets better. Or, it may not get better at all.Bristol-Myers says that it lost $600 million in revenue for its big-selling drug Plavix in the third quarter alone. The reason. Generics. The revenue attrition caused earnings to fall 65% for the quarter.Faced with dropping revenue
Pfizer announced that its experimental drug for lowering cholesterol also raises blood pressure. The clogged arteries may not kill customers, but the high blood pressure may.
Prudential put out a note on the problem saying that does not think "it will effect the overall risk versus benefit of the drug in the long run."
Goldman Sachs had a different take: "The concerns about blood pressure risk with torcetrapib will be reinforced by these data, however preliminary the data are."
The market seemed to side with Goldman, as Pfizer's shares dropped from a price of $27.22 on Monday to an intraday low of $26.44 yesterday.
The problem that Pfizer has with torcetrapib reflects a much larger concern in the market. As patents on the large money makers at Big Pharma expire, moving some share to generic drug makers, the larger companies must come up with new, patented products.
IMS Health, a research firm, says that $23 billion worth of drugs will go "off patent" this year based on the annual sale
