Imagine this: Tom Petty walks onstage, older now since the last time you saw him, more defined lines and wrinkles, wearing a purple velveteen jacket and looking glassy-eyed—he’s probably more wasted than you. He opens with “Rescue Me,”
I've focused on three books this past week, a small number for some of you. Yet I'd much prefer concentrating on one novel at a time and I kept hoping all week that one would grab my total attention instead of leaving me internally agitating to start one of the many library books that came into my possession over the past few days that seemed much more promising than those already in progress (mor

It's been confirmed that we'll be enjoying a little bit of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers during the 2008 Super Bowl Halftime show. It's OK. At least it will be better than Prince, last Super Bowl's choice. What happened to good shows like the one with Janet Jackson?Â
Speaking of Janet Jackson and her "Wardrobe Malfunction' (it couldn't be more obvious that it was all planned), it really upsets me to see how big the scandal was. So much, that it was on 2004 and they're still talking about it. It seems the Federal Communications Commission wants to go on with the idea of giving CBS a $550,000 fine for the infamous transmision. It will be determined soon if CBS is going to be punished for the "indecency". Isn't it a little bit of overreacting?Â
Even when it was planned (at least that's how it looks: Justin Timberlake actually ripped the clothes off and it was no accident), I think it shouldn't be causing that much of a fuzz. There

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers know more about what they won’t do than what they will for their Super Bowl 42 halftime performance. Petty tells Rollingstone.com he’s, quote, “approaching it as a pretty high-energy rock and roll show — maybe like it used to be in the 1960s where you come on, do four or five of your best numbers and get off.” He says the band hasn’t decided yet on a set list. While the band will pick some of their best-known tunes, one hit they’ll skip is “You Don’t Know How It Feels” because of its marijuana reference. Petty admits, quote, “It was strongly hinted” the group avoid playing songs that mention drugs.
The classic rocker understands that the National Football League is trying to put on a family-friendly event. He even seems to like the idea, adding, quote, “people of all ages and musical tastes in one place is what’s exciting about it.” Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker
Its hard to believe that its been almost four years since Miss Jacksons infamous wardrobe malfunction during the Super Bowl halftime show with Justin Timberlake in 2004. Since then, legendary artists Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones have rocked the stage at halftime, and nearly 140 million Americans watched Prince play this year at the NFL championship

‘The Patron’ is the debut album from the gorgeously named duo To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie. Comprised of guitarist and vocalist Jehna Wilhelm and electronics man Mark McGee, this duo clearly share a love of post rock and, on ‘The Patron’, even manage to move the genre on into territories as yet uncharted. Filling their skewed pop songs with noise and electrical excesses, they make pop music sound like skeletons from the hydra’s teeth, and manage to sit themselves somewhere in-between the glorious library-lounge music of Broadcast, the percussive jazz of Tortoise and the mysterious beauty of Portishead. Take the eight minute “Long Arms” for example, which begins with sub-aquatic drones and electronic manipulations, while dusty, reverb-drenched vocals are flawlessly layered into the background. And while these compositions might be synthesizer-assisted, lie back and let the electronics do the work. This is devilishly complex and forged by the hand
Cait came home complaining yet again about one of her teachers. Being familiar with this teacher, I knew that her complaint was more than legitimate. The rant started as soon as she walked in the door from the school bus.
She launched in, “Mom, she’s incoherent when she’s giving directions. Nobody understands her!”
I didn’t even have to ask who she was talking about. Knowing the litany, I joined in on the next chorus, “She won’t even answer questions when you ask for help!” We finished in unison.
Cait did not find me amusing.
“Don’t you care?!” she glared at me.
“Yes, I care very much. AND it doesn’t matter.”
“Please don’t you start going incoherent on me.”
“Come on, let’s go for a walk and I’ll explain something to you.”
Cait grabbed a snack, I grabbed Kiera, and we headed down the road. She still needed to vent. I continued to listen.

There was no just cause for me to be short-tempered with the parking ticket attendant on my way out of Navy Pier this evening. But I gave him a hard time in classic "kick the dog" mode. I was venting my pent up anger from the four hour gig I had just suffered through plus the four hour gig the previous night.frustration: 1) a feeling of dissatisfaction, often accompanied by anxiety or depression, resulting from unfulfilled needs or unresolved problems.2) The condition that results when an impulse or an action is thwarted by an external or an internal force.I was ready to tear what's left of my hair out because a certain musician who had turned up on both of these gigs drives me insane with his playing. It is difficult to describe to civilians, but you musicians will know what I mean when I tell you what this man does to frustrate me: he plays way too loud, doesn't listen and, worst of all, rushes like a mo'fo' constantly. There is nothing I can do to make the music feel good because

A friend who was recently traveling in Rome had her wallet stolen. Although there was no major loss, she had to cancel all her credit cards as well as spend time reporting the theft to the police. While you're unlikely to be a victim of violent crime in Italy, when traveling in tourist areas in big cities like Rome and Florence you may be a target for pickpockets or purse snatchers. To avoid loss, it's always wise to carry any important documents (like your passport), your credit cards, and most of your money in a travel security wallet or passport holder that can be worn under your clothing.

One year ago i created this site, at first it was a joke, i mean c'mon Helen Reddy at Number 1000? But, as butts have it, people were disturbed with some of my early selections (3 entries of the Village People???) and i decided very early on i shouldn't mess with the idea. So, to the best of my ability, remembering that i had never written anything in HTML before July 27th 2006, and yes and your right, I still haven't learnt that much. HA! to you in the 3rd row chuckling. But i persevered and self taught myself till i felt that the concept & design were at least half right.I have also learnt that its not easy making this site a success, for example, The Reddit, Digg, Delicious & Metafilter people were pretty straight forward when it came to if something sucked, my email recieved 50/50 of hate mail as well as the "good on ya's", but i have to tell you i thought it wouldn't t

I was told the other day that someone I knew started a contract with a UK merchant bank in the city and he resigned after 2 weeks. Now this person does have a certain history of suddenly becoming available on the market place but he usually lasts several months, not 2 weeks so there may be something in his story. Apparently they were a bit petty minded. He was allowed to receive internet email but could not send internet email and a whole load of other feeble restrictions. I’m sure they could come up with good reasons for that but can you imagine what a lousy atmosphere there must be there. Another one of those sites when as soon you as you start you are on your way out. Not dissimilar to the US bank I mentioned where they are always looking for reasons to fire people. Terrific.

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Long After Dark (1982)320kbpsRiding high on the back-to-back Top Five, platinum hits Damn the Torpedoes and Hard Promises, Tom Petty quickly returned to the studio to record the Heartbreakers' fifth album, Long After Dark. Truth be told, there was about as long a gap between Dark and Promises as there was between Promises and Torpedoes, but there was a difference this time around -- Petty & the Heartbreakers sounded tired. Even if there are a few new wave flourishes here and there, the band hasn't really changed its style at all -- it's still Stonesy, Byrdsian heartland rock. As their first four albums illustrated, that isn't a problem in itself, since they've found numerous variations within their signature sound, providing they have the right songs. Unfortunately, Petty had a dry spell on Long After Dark. With its swirling, minor key guitars, "You Got Lucky" is a classic and "Change of Heart" comes close to matching those peaks, but the remainin
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)(1987)320kbpsTom Petty & the Heartbreakers spent much of 1986 on the road as Bob Dylan's backing band. Dylan's presence proved to be a huge influence on the Heartbreakers, turning them away from the well-intentioned but slick pretensions of Southern Accents and toward a loose, charmingly ramshackle roots rock that harked back to their roots yet exhibited the professional eclecticism they developed during the mid-'80s. All of this was on full display on Let Me Up (I've Had Enough), their simplest and best album since Hard Promises. Not to say that Let Me Up is a perfect album -- far from it, actually. Filled with loose ends, song fragments, and unvarnished productions, it's a defiantly messy album, and it's all the better for it, especially arriving on the heels of the well-groomed Accents. Apart from the (slightly dated) rant "Jammin' Me'" (co-written by Dylan, but you can't tell), there aren't any standouts on the
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Hard Promises(1981)320kbpsDamn the Torpedoes wasn't simply a culmination of Tom Petty's art; it happened to be a huge success, enabling him to call the shots on its successor, Hard Promises. Infamously, he used his first album as a star to challenge the record industry's practice of charging more for A-list artists, demanding that Hard Promises should be listed for less than most records by an artist of his stature, but if that was the only thing notable about the album, it would have disappeared like Long After Dark. Instead, it offered a reaffirmation that Damn the Torpedoes wasn't a fluke. There's not much new on the surface, since it continues the sound of its predecessor, but it's filled with great songwriting, something that's as difficult to achieve as a distinctive sound. The opener, "The Waiting," became the best-known song on the record, but there's no discounting "A Woman in Love (It's Not Me)," "Nightwatchman," "Kings Road," "Insid
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - You're Gonna Get It(1978)320kbpsTom Petty & the Heartbreakers didn't really knock out their second album -- it was released two years after their debut -- but it sure sounds as if they did. There are some wonderful moments on this record, but it often feels like leftovers from a strong debut, or an album written on the road, especially since the music is simply an extension of the first album. That said, when You're Gonna Get It! works, it devastates. That's not saying that "When the Time Comes" is a masterpiece, even if it's a fine opener, but it does mean that "I Need to Know" and the scathing "Listen to Her Heart" are testaments to how good this band could be when it was focused. If the rest of the album doesn't achieve this level of perfection, that's a signal that they were still finding their footing, but overall it's still a solid record, filled with good performances that are never quite as good as the songs. It's pretty good as it spi
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Self-Titled(1976)320kbpsAt the time Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' debut was released in 1976, they were fresh enough to almost be considered punk. They weren't as reckless or visionary as the Ramones, but they shared a similar love for pure '60s rock and, for the Heartbreakers, that meant embracing the Byrds as much as the Stones. And that's pretty much what this album is -- tuneful jangle balanced by a tough garage swagger. At times, the attitude and the sound override the songwriting, but that's alright, since the slight songs ("Anything That's Rock 'N' Roll," to pick a random example) are still infused with spirit and an appealing surface. Petty & the Heartbreakers feel underground on this album, at least to the extent that power pop was underground in 1976; with Dwight Twilley providing backing vocals for "Strangered in the Night," the similarities between the two bands (adherence to pop hooks and melodies, love of guitars) become appa

This is my 100th post on this blog! Its not a particularly happy or deep and soulful post. It is a post of petty revenge that I have resisted until this day to act upon. This is a picture of someone that I will call "Dick" for the purposes of protecting his identity despite how much he does not deserve it. Also, of course, the double meaning of the name gives you a sense of what his personality is like. No offense to any of you out there named "Dick". In my previous rants about Theatre Company and the Spring Play, I have mentioned the group of people determined to have their way and ignore other people's ideas. "Dick" is the ringleader. In the drama studio, there are quite alot of pictures of people in Theatre Company in various plays. I have quite a few pictures posted on the walls. The other day, I noticed that in almost all of my pictures, somebody took a sharpie and decided to blot out my face. My immediate emotions of course were rage and different methods of revenge ran through m
The New Haven Register has an investigative piece into Joe Lieberman’s $387,000 in unaccounted petty cash disbursements from the last days of the August primary (h/t DeanFan84). The article raises serious questions about what this money went for, as well as what itemized disbursements for consultants who claim to have never received them mean. Not surprisingly, the Lieberman campaign has declined to answer these questions.
The Register article raises three serious potential violations of campaign finance laws. The one that most interests me is the possibility that the Lieberman campaign laundered money through their field consultants to convert it to street money.
Also, [Tom] Reyes and another man, Daryl Brooks of New Haven, who ran a consultant service, said they each got one check from the campaign for their services, but they are listed in the third quarter campaign finance report as getting two checks, for a total of twice what the men said they received.
The report lists
Connecticut Bob interviewed Republican senate candidate Alan Schlesinger tonight and asked him about Joe’s $387,000 in unaccounted petty cash disbursements.

CT Bob: Senator Lieberman apparently went through $387,000 in petty cash during the twelve days preceding the primary. By comparison, Ned Lamont’s campaign recorded a total of $500 petty cash for the same period. No other senate campaign has recorded anywhere near the same amount of petty cash being essentially unaccounted for. What do you think may be going on here?
Schlesinger: “Well, it’s an awful lot of petty cash. It’s more than our whole
campaign in petty cash.
I’ll tell ya, it’s gotta be street money. I mean, it makes no other
sense.
I really thought the days of that were over, back in the early sixties,
but I guess not.
It’s unfortunate.”
For a prime
Media coverage of Joe’s $387,561 in unaccounted petty cash disbursements has been effectively zero. Today, though, Timothy Brennan has a great op-ed in the Hartford Courant calling for Lieberman to account for all of his petty cash and answer the question of why he is spending so much money under the table. Jennifer Medina’s article on the CT senate race also includes three paragraphs on the petty cash scandal. Jennifer Medina writes:
The latest sparks came early this week, when the Lamont campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission about nearly $380,000 the Lieberman campaign listed as "petty cash" to pay for volunteers in the final two weeks of the primary. Tammy Sun, a spokeswoman for Mr. Lieberman, said the money was used to pay for young workers used in the field operation in the last days of the campaign.
By law, a campaign must keep a journal of petty cash payments of less than $100, but it is not required to make the contents of the journa
