By default, Wordpress Permalink structure looks like this http://missylicious.com/blog/?p=123. The 123 is the post ID for your blog. However, this makes no sense to the search engine. Who will google 123?
To make your post more friendly towards search engine, change the Permalink structure to “Date and Name Based”. This can be found under your Admin Wordpress Panel->Options->Permalinks.
Some might find adding date to the URL senseless. What you can do is to choose “Custom, Specify Below” (instead of “Date and Name Based”) and type “/%postname%/”. From now on the URL of your permalinks will be closely related to your title. This will allow search engines to index your pages efficiently.
The last step is to locate the .htaccess file in the root directory of your blog and update it.
Many Worpdress user did not know the important of Permalink. Permalinks can impact your SEO and rank up your search engine ranking and at the same time give visitors more attention to visit your site.

Today I have changed my permalink structure to post name rather than the default (?p=23). I found it difficult to find out how to do this because whenever I changed the structure it told me to update the .htaccess file and the posts then wouldn’t link properly. After posting a question on DigitalPoint I soon found then answer.
Login to your hosting account through FTP, goto the directory where the blog is installed (maybe public_html if installed at root), change permissions of the .htaccess file to 666 and then try to update/save your permalink structure from wordpress.
I hope this information helps some of you bloggers, as it helped me!
If the .htaccess file doesn’t exist, upload/create an empty file of that name and follow the process above.

The Wordpress default permalink called ‘Ugly’ permalink type which looks like this http://example.com/?p=N where N=number.

It seems that while back, probably after the upgrade to WP 2.1 the permalink structure changed on this site for a few days and I didn’t catch it.
The normal permalink structure in this site is

but for a short while it was

Needless to say that has caused a few broken links here on the blog and from incoming referrers.
I’ve spent the last few minutes employing a little .htaccess magic so now all the links that point where they should.
So now it doesn’t matter if a link comes to
