      Colour Perception
The human brain is a strange and wonderful thing. It's ability to perceive colour is by no means straight forward. For instance, take the colour red; it has a tendency to come forward so that a red object looks comparatively closer to the viewer than it actually is. Some people have put forward the suggestion that this is because the earth's atmosphere is blue and that objects far away will have a blue cast to them as the light from them passes through more and more blue atmosphere and that this produces the psychological effect of bringing red objects closer.Sounds reasonable doesn't it. But at night, green objects look closer and red looks less 'forward'. Try seeing if you can notice this effect with traffic lights, comparing daytime to nighttime. Most people think of their eyes as the org

It is recognised that the process involves a wide range of stimuli, which are thought likely to interact in a complex way, but, since the chemical compounds and physical structures that activate the flavor sensors change as the food is eaten, measurements of the changes in stimuli with time are essential to an understanding of the relationship between stimuli and perception. It is clear that we need to consider the whole process - the release of flavor chemicals in the mouth, the transport processes to the receptors, the specificity and cha

I'm a lazy human being, I admit it. But I still manage to walk more than anyone I know (except maybe my mom, she's pretty much superwoman, exercise edition). Because I'm lazy, I'm not going to rewrite the original version of this post - which was supposed to be on fashionable rain boots - which Blogger seems to have gobbled up without leaving a single crumb behind. Anyhow.I have a personal belief that walking is its own form of activism. Only the poor, crazy and disabled seem to do it anymore, crazy including "activists" like myself. Walking makes streets safer because it puts more eyes on the street, it obviously reduces pollution (every time you walk you're doing your fellow (wo)man a favour, not to mention all the other flora and fauna by reducing emissions) and the more people do it, t

Life isn’t in black and white. You choose how to color what you see and do. Your life is as colorful as YOU allow it to be. Just like a child brings a coloring book page to life with crayons, your thoughts color your world. I’ve talked about how we can create new habits to replace those that aren’t serving you in a positive way. You can break habits of letting other people program how you view your life and then create a habit of having a more positive perception. You can create the good habit of coloring your world with bright hues!Did you ever adjust the color of a TV set? You turn the dial one way and the colors get brighter and more vibrant. Go the other direction and it gets washed out or not there. That’s what perception does to you thoughts! YOU control the dials. Perception

Later, an old man saw it and commented, "The husband is the head of the family. How can the wife ride on the donkey while the husband is on foot?" The perception of affluence and sophistication is undoubtedly an important factor in American culture today. The notions of “aspirational” consumption, “upward mobility” and “urban chic” were coined not merely as an exercise in pop culture marketing but, I believe, because they accurately reflect that sentiment shared by millions of Americans whose only experience is easy prosperity and consumption. Although generations “X” and “Y” are, in general, more educated and “professional” than past generations, most have little to no real experience with a prolonged period of economic contraction and its deleterious effects on self and society.Sure, some wised up during the aftermath of the dot-com bust but that contraction was not only artificially cut short and postponed b

      Playing with the mind's perception
An optical illusion is always characterized by visually perceived images that, at least in common sense terms, are deceptive or misleading. Therefore, the information gathered by the eye is processed by the brain to give, on the face of it, a percept that does not tally with a physical measurement of the stimulus source. A conventional assumption is that there are physiological illusions that occur naturally and cognitive illusions that can be demonstrated by specific visual tricks that say something more basic about how human perceptual systems work. source: wikipediaTrompe l'oeil (which by the way is French for "deceiving the eye", pronounced "tromp loy"). It uses perspective to "trick" the eyes of the viewer, but the difference lies in the nature of the trick. For trompe l'oeil, the vi

Perception Is Everything - See How Google Is Slapping People About Pagerank
By: Ricardo Mephistopolis This article was written in a simple language so you can learn on how Google is manipulating the pagerank. Pay attention. Recently Google did a major PageRank update where a lot of sites were downgraded. Many experts believe this PageRank update was Google’s response to link selling - sites which sell links lost points in their PageRank. Google measures all web pages on a scale of importance from 0 to 10, which is shown in a small green pixel bar on browsers carrying the Google Toolbar. PageRank is “supposedly” measured by the number of backlinks to your site. Online democracy in action, a link is a vote for your site. The more votes you have the higher your site is ranked. At least that’s how it was supposed to work until a lot of high PR sites started selling links and put a monkey wrench into the whole system. The latest update may be a smart move on Google’s part to curtail this practice; who’s going to buy a link

      Unique Customer Perception (UCP)
Marketing is a domain which is dynamic i.e. involves change, an important phenomenon not to be overlooked. We have come across a term “Unique Selling Proposition”(USP) which companies feel as a constant factor . Every organisation is an open system of management which means change is inevitable and is associated with environmental factors. Companies need to focus not only on USP of their products but also on the “Unique Customer Perception”(UCP) of the final end users. The prop of marketing is based on the need identification and the USP's are prepared based on the identified needs . If the needs are wrongly identified then even the USP's which are unique to the product would not serve the purpose. USP identifies a product/service from its competitors while UCP is the perception or picture a customer develops from all types of promotional inputs from the company about their product or service. It is often seen that some brands do extremely well compared to other brands having

Object Perception Affects Toddler Language Development
Unlike an infant who fixates on the most prominent part of the object (ex. a wagging tail on a dog, the bright pattern of someone’s shirt), a young toddler focuses on the whole object (the dog, or person).  So the research they have recently found this reveals that as young toddlers learn language, they are focusing on the whole object rather than the parts. As a parent to a toddler, this is helpful to know. So when talking about part of an object it may help to point it out (specifically) and say the word (of the part) and explain what it is or what it does. The average vocabulary comprehension for a 12-month-old is 65-110 words, and that increases to a few thousand by the time the child is 2. For example, when introducing a young toddler to a dog, the child automatically thinks of the object as a dog. If adults want to talk about the dog’s tail or its bark, then they need to be more explicit when communicating with the child. If adults do not make this effort, it can hi

The Expectations Trap - Bending the Perception of Reality
miWisdom today… When perceptively negative circumstances befall people, they will usually tend to think the very worst of their predicament. Even if this person talks positively and optimistically about their situation to others, internally, they are expecting and preparing themselves mentally for the very worst end result. Since our expectations guide our decisions, direction and actions, we will therefore tend to realize our expectations in the real world more often than not. How is it that our expectations tend to create our reality? It has to do with our thought patterns and the emotions that we experience on a daily basis. Simply put; the direction of your thoughts influences what you are or are not able to perceive within your present environment. If you are thinking negatively you will tend to see negative people, events, problems and circumstances around you. On the other hand, if you are thinking positively, you will tend to see opportunities abound, tha

The US middle class is shrinking and people know it, feel it. Here is an interesting blog on the subject Whatever happened to sharing the pie of prosperity? Some highlights: Last week, a friend in his 30s prodded me to explain how my generation, the boomers, had botched so many things. While not exactly conceding that we had, I said that the one thing none of us had anticipated was that America would cease to be a land of broadly shared prosperity. Median family income over the past quarter-century has stagnated. The economic rewards from increased productivity, which went to working-class as well as wealthy Americans from the 1940s to the ’70s, now go exclusively to the rich. The manufacturing jobs that anchored our prosperity were offshored, automated, or deunionized; lower-paying service-sector jobs took their place. … a poll released this month by the Pew Research Center reveals a transformation of Americans’ sense of their country and themselves that is startl

They had quite a bit of security measures in place including updated resident software, multiple firewalls, limited user privileges and did regular anti-spyware scans with a program that was specialized for this.   Needless to say, they were pretty shocked when I found keyloggers, screenloggers, a rootkit and downloader Trojans.  They were also saturated with high danger level adware that made their network vulnerable to additional malware downloads. Almost 100 workstations out of the 655 scanned were infected.   While I was there doing the malware audit, they were hit by a massive spam attack. The email offered a free Microsoft product download. About a quarter of their 6000 pcs received the spam. Some of the users on the network were savvy enough to think “maybe this is suspicious” and reported it to their help desk but, unfortunately, over a dozen

      Nature of Happiness and Perception
nature of happiness | If a man thinks that his happiness is due to external causes and his possessions, it is reasonable to conclude that his happiness must increase with the increase of possessions and diminish in proportion to their diminution. Therefore if he is devoid of possessions, his happiness should be nil. What is the real experience of man? Does it conform to this view? In deep sleep the man is devoid of possessions, including his own body. Instead of being unhappy he is quite happy. Everyone desires to sleep soundly. The conclusion is that happiness is inherent in man and is not due to external causes. One must realise his Self in order to open the store of unalloyed happiness.nature of perception | Whatever state one is in, the perceptions partake of that state. The explanation is that in the waking state (jagrat) the gross body perceives gross names and forms; in swapna (the dream state) the mental body perceives the mental creations in their manifold forms and names; in t

The Wisdom Of The Ages 24 - PERCEPTION - by Manoj Sharma
THE WISDOM OF THE AGES 24 - PERCEPTION - by MANOJ SHARMAContemplate the following and make sense of it...Perception has been called reality, but what happens when you regard your external reality to be true but, only as a perception unique to you?Your perception while a reality is not the same as the reality. To appreciate the reality, requires a removal of your perception. You have a choice as to how you choose to perceive and a decision to make on what you want to have show up in your next reality.Your perception is your point of view, another's perception may or may not be a differing point of view. While it is easier for you to see your point of view, it is much tougher to see another's point of view and virtually impossible without a high level of consciousness to observe view point - a point of view without the bias of perception. The further into yesterday and tomorrow you can peer the more sense everything happening today will make and the more your perception will fade into tr

      ESP (Extra sensory perception)
ESP or extrasensory perception is perception occurring independently of sight, hearing, or other sensory processes. People who have extrasensory perception are said to be psychic. It is commonly called ESP, ESP refers to telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and in recent years, remote viewing and clairaudience. The existence of ESP and other paranormal powers such as telekinesis, are disputed, though systematic experimental research on these subjects, known collectively as psi, has been ongoing for over a century in parapsychology. History of ESPESP is most commonly called the "sixth sense." It can provide the individual with information of the present, past, and future; as it seems to originate in a second, or alternate reality. The term "ESP" was used in 1870 by Sir Richard Burton. A French researcher, Dr. Paul Joire, in 1892 used the term ESP to describe the ability of person who had been hypnotized or were in a trance state to externally sense things without using their ordinary s

Probabilistic Models of the Brain: Perception and Neural Function
Author: Rajesh P. N. RaoPaperback: 334 pagesPublisher: The MIT Press (February 15, 2002)Language: EnglishISBN: 0262182246Neurophysiological, neuroanatomical, and brain imaging studies have helped to shed light on how the brain transforms raw sensory information into a form that is useful for goal-directed behavior. A fundamental question that is seldom addressed by these studies, however, is why the brain uses the types of representations it does and what evolutionary advantage, if any, these representations confer. It is difficult to address such questions directly via animal experiments. A promising alternative is to use probabilistic principles such as maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference to derive models of brain function. This book surveys some of the current probabilistic approaches to modeling and understanding brain function. Although most of the examples focus on vision, many of the models and techniques are applicable to other modalities as well. The book presents top

7 days to change your perception of you and your live
The Seven Day Mental Diet How to change your life (and the world) in a week by Emmet Fox The subject of diet is one of the foremost topics of the present day in public interest. Newspapers and magazines teem with articles on the subject. The counters of the bookshops are filled with volumes unfolding the mysteries of proteins, starches, vitamins, and so forth. just now the whole world is food-conscious. Experts on the subject are saying that physically you become the thing that you eat that your whole body is really composed of the food that you have eaten in the past. What you eat today, they say, will be in your bloodstream after the lapse of so many hours, and it is your blood-stream that builds all the tissues composing your body -and there you are. Of course, no sensible person has any quarrel with all this. It is perfectly true, as far as it goes, and the only surprisi

      Digital Multimedia Perception and Design
Gheorghita Ghinea & Sherry Y. Chen (Idea Group Publishing) "Multimedia is an interdisciplinary, application-oriented technology that capitalizes on the multi-sensory nature of humans and the ability of computers to store, manipulate, and convey non-numerical information such as video, graphics, and audio in addition to numerical and textual information. Multimedia has the intrinsic goal of improving the effectiveness of computer-to-human interaction and, ultimately, of human-to-human communication. While the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) community looks predominantly at the application layer and the telecommunications community at the lower end of the ISO OSI stack, little work has been published in bridging the gap between these two communities. Indeed, the human element is often neglected in Quality of Service (QoS) negotiation protocols. Not only does this have a negative and undesirable impact on the user’s experience of multimedia, it also discards the potential for more

      Sensory Perception
Our eyes, ears, and other sensory organs are simply devices that gather signals for our brains to interpret. Our perception of reality is not defined by these input devices, but instead by our brain's interpretation of these signals. Anything that alters the brain's ability to process and interpret these signals also alters our perception of reality (as the 1970's proved). This extends beyond chemical alteration of the mind, though. I am learning that the dreamworld is just as real to your mind as the waking world. The dreamworld is not a shared perception, but your perception of senses is still fully functional--the dreamworld is as real to your mind as anything else you perceive.

      Pomo or Psychological Perception?
I have been having a conversation with a co-worker recently regarding postmodernism. This is a topic that I’ve had some exposure to through my studies at Biola University, especially in courses taught by R. Scott Smith, author of Truth and the New Kind of Christian: The Emerging Effects of Postmodernism in the Church. As we were discussing this topic, it became clear, however, that our understanding of the topic differed. As my friend kept describing postmodernism, it kept sounding to me like psychological perception. Let me explain. Each example seemed to revolve around how words influence our perceptions of reality, not that the reality itself is somehow influenced or restricted by words (as is my understanding of postmodernism). One of the examples was that as we begin to place importance on something, it becomes important in peoples’ minds because the importance placed on the item by our talking about it affects how people feel about it. I completely agree with this. I

Pay No Attention to The Woman Spinning in the Tower: The Fashion PR (Mis)Perception
If the fairies who came to bestow gifts upon Sleeping Beauty at her party were actually public relations practitioners, the Fashion PR practitioner would have been the one nobody wanted to invite. It’s no secret that for many traditional public relations organizations and practitioners, Fashion Public Relations is perceived as the immature, superficial younger sister or bizarre aunt you only admit relation to when pressed (or when she’s talking to somebody important, then she’s your BFF). Contributions from Fashion PR, or any Lifestyle PR specialty really, are rarely appreciated or acknowledged. BlinnPR says quite frankly, “I have little respect for fashion, sports and celebrity publicists,” The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Mission tells us that “Public relations serves a wide variety of institutions in society such as businesses, trade unions, government agencies, voluntary associations, foundations, hospitals, schools, colleges and r

Perception vs. Reality - Imus, Race and the Influence of Hip-Hop/Rap...
As we all know, Don Imus was fired from CBS Radio yesterday, thus probably ending his radio career -- for the moment. In addition, he met the Rutgers Women's Basketball team at the governor's mansion in Trenton, NJ. Well, it's a shame that a man had to get fired, but Mr. Imus went to the well one way too many times. A lot of disgusting stuff was said by Imus (a shtick that has been done time in and time again), but this time he caught and run out of business. However, I don't even think the problem is Imus -- it is the culture at large. I am going to hold Imus to a higher standard than your run-of-the-mill hip hop artists and rappers who have to engage in such language. As long as hip hop and rap artists use derogatory terms to describe women, and executives can make millions peddling the stuff, then it will give guys like Imus and others reinforcement to use those stereotypes. If black people demean each other in that fashion, what would those outside the community think? Ev

      Perception Is Reality
The Washington Post has a very interesting piece on Joshua Bell, an official uber violinist playing in the Metro in Washington DC. Tickets for his guys performances have reached $1000 a pop. One wouldn’t expect to see a world renowned violinist in the Metro. 1079 people passed him as he played over 43 minutes. The overwhelming response to him was complete lack of reaction. All but invisible, he made just $32.17 in tips for his performance. A world renowned violinist should play in a fancy music hall, wear a tux, have some stray hairs or semi-uncontrolled mop of hair and charge the earth to get in. So what does a great realtor look like? I mean all the skills in the world mean apparently nothing unless you can be recognized for them. I’m guessing it’s something about a lot of listings, a wall of awards, face everywhere and some kind of disregard for the need for this particular sale to go through in order to feed the family. Realism and Perception: Where the Orioles Stand…
This morning, I was reading the Baltimore Sun and caught a piece by Sheil Kapadia titled What They’re Saying About the Orioles: A Roundup of National Press Coverage. I decided to expand a little on the piece, add a few more quotes and give my opinion. The Orioles did get a lot better; however, the team did not make the sexy moves like we here wanted. In light of it all, the Orioles will not be in cellar unless Tejada or one of the big bats ends up hurt for half the season. I think a lot of these writers and so-called media experts have tunnel vision and have been looking way, way too much in the past. Simply put, some of these people can not see the forest from the trees here. Over the past few years, the Orioles in the media have been burnt, toasted and burnt to a crisp thanks to some of the so-called experts in the media and on TV. I am resigned to say we will not win the division, but the team is very much improved and a third place finish is not out of the realm of

Annual Competition Honors People Changing Perception of Hearing Loss - Call for Nominations
Oticon, Inc. is seeking nominations for its tenth annual Oticon Focus on People Awards. People with any degree of hearing loss are eligible. The national awards program, created by Oticon in 1998 honors hearing impaired students, adults and advocacy volunteers whose accomplishments demonstrate that hearing loss does not limit a person’s ability to make a difference in their families, their communities or the world. For over ten years, Oticon has worked to change outdated stereotypes that discourage people from seeking professional help for their hearing loss by spotlighting people with hearing loss and their achievements and contributions. Since 1998, the program has awarded more than $150,000 to deserving individuals and the not-for-profit causes of their choice. “We are proud to celebrate a decade of acknowledging the incredible contributions that people with hearing loss make in all walks of life, ” states Peer Lauritsen, President of Oticon, Inc. “We beli

Drugs In Sports - Reality vs. Perception...
Once again, the steroid use has reared its ugly head in the world of sports. This week, according to ESPN, an illicit steroid distribution network, which may be responsible for Internet sales of performance-enhancing drugs nationwide, has been targeted by an upstate New York prosecutor and customers include current Angels outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. former player Jose Canseco, and former heavyweight boxing Champion Evander Holyfield. In my heart of hearts, If baseball, much less any other sport wanted to stop illicit use of drugs, then Bug Selig and others in position of authority would have the gumption to style the drug testing program held by the Olympics. The World Anti-Doping Agency has railed against baseball’s testing, and I agree with their standpoint. If baseball really wanted to stop the illegal drug use once and for all, they would not curb into the Players’ Association and just add testing for HGH and whatever else.Someone remind me, how long has the will to win at any

happy new year...thoughts on space, perception and language....
Had a nice vacation in nor cal with my fiancee. Saw Leslie Rule and Paula Levine for coffee. We had a great conversation. Saw again how cities change in context when leaving and returning and how places and your memory are so fluid, so situational and contextual even in their hard facts and paths. It reminds me of how when I was a student I would fly home from sfo and once I left the ground, San Francisco abstracted within me, seemed distant in time, blurred in detail as L.A already did after leaving a few months before. The feeling in mid flight was of a sort of enlightened amnesia, a sort of despatialization......like my only understanding was the dimensions of the plane and my weight on the seat and against the window, the texture of the blanket on me, the length of the walkway to the tiny little psuedo bathroom.......all else was wiped clean.........the transitory......It also reminds me of how an article in a science journal talked about new developments in laser eye sur

      Perception is Something We Do
Mind Hacks is a great blog by a couple guys who have a passion for cognitive neuroscience. There is always something interesting to read there. Today I found a quote from PSYCHE, a journal about consciousness. They make what may sound like a face valid statement about what is perception. When I was in graduate school, perception was described as physiological and psychological means to sense and understand our environment. Attention and awareness while mentioned and studied as a mediating function hardly gained the prominence implied in the following quote. Perception is not something that happens to us, or in us. It is something we do. Think of a blind person taptapping his or her way around a cluttered space, perceiving that space by touch, not all at once, but through time, by skillful probing and movement. This is, or at least ought to be, our paradigm of what perceiving is. The world makes itself available to the perceiver through physical movement and interaction. While they ma

The Donovan Rule of changing your audience's perception of you
Your target audience's perception of your product or service is often permanent. In fact, it's one of the hardest things in the universe to change.Which is why it's crucial to make sure you get it strategically right in the first place.Donovan is a good example of this.In the mid-sixties, Donovan was Great Britain's answer to Dylan. Like Dylan, Donovan sang Woody Guthrie songs while playing guitar and harmonica at the same time. But while Dylan stayed on the A-list for over four decades (and even won a Grammy for his 2006 album), Donovan's career basically ended when the sixties ended. What happened? With such albums as Sunshine Superman, Mellow Yellow and A Gift From A Flower To A Garden, Donovan became the poster-flower child of the sixties. He cemented that perception by dressing like a flower child and joining the Beatles in India to study with the Maharishi. And when the sixties ended and his audience embraced either the harder or more progressive sounds of the seventies, they

What's your perception of all the plastic on the new machines? posted by Debi in OK
I was still machine shopping this weekend, and found myself concerned about all the plastic on the Pfaff and Viking machines (Pfaff 2048 2058) (Viking 870Q). Is this a problem indicating what the inner construction is like or am I just not dealing with the way things are???? This machine is going to have to last me for awhile. I'll be honest I'm intrigued by bells and whistles. The price tags though, make me think there should be something more than plastic on the body of the machine. Have you had good experiences with these high-end sewing machines that have soooo much plastic on them?
