WTF?: Pelican eats bread then pigeon?
This is old news that is new to me where an onlooker captured on video a pelican lunging and consuming a pigeon at London's St. James's Park. However, I find it more odd that the pelican ate bread according to the News anchor. Anyhow, one less domesticated pigeon in London isn't going to break too many hearts. I have seen the pelicans at St. James’s Park and I believe they are African Pink-backed pelicans (Pelecanus rufescens).

A Wonderful Bird is the Pelican...
...His mouth can hold more than his belly can. He can hold it in his beak, enough food for a week! I'm damned if I know how the helican. So wrote Dixon Lanier Merrit in 1910, a Southern newspaper editor and President of the American Press Humorists Association.Like all large sea birds, they sometimes have difficulty taking off, and these Australian pelicans (Pelecanus conspicillatus) are no exception.Pelicans are gregarious, are quick to exploit any resource, and can live on fresh or salt water. If fed regularly they can become quite tame.I am reminded of Storm Boy the 1977 feature film, where a boy rescues three orphaned pelican chicks. Fishing Boat and Pelican on the Water at DawnI took this photo on a recent holiday to Lake Cootharaba, near Noosa. The shade of a nearby tree gives the photo a blueish tone. Halo Papercraft - D77 Pelican Dropship
We've posted a Halo papercraft before featuring Master Chief, today we're adding a new one featuring Halo's D-77 Pelican Dropship Troop Carrier - it's a versatile craft used by the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) mainly for extraction and transportation of personnel and equipment but can also serve as a gunship. It has a large overhang on its rear that serves as an attachment point for large cargo and ordnance which range from Warthogs, to Scorpion Tanks, or troop-bay extensions. Here's a great free papercraft model from Planet Starfreak (Home of the legendary Grunkohl-Mod), you can also check their other papercrafts such as the Shadowcat V2 from MechWarrior and the Serenity (Firefly vessel). - thanks to Alain for the link.D-77 Pelican - [Download Page] [Home Page]

Pelican intros Controller Charging Station for PlayStation 3
Filed under: Gaming, Peripherals Nyko's SIXAXIS charging dock may serve the same purpose as Pelican's forthcoming device, but we'll give the sexy award to the latter. The Controller Charging Station for PlayStation 3 boasts a very unique, if not admirable design that holds two SIXAXIS controllers above ground and juices 'em up through the exposed mini USB plugs. Additionally, the base of the unit is home to two full sized USB ports (shown after the jump), so there's always the option of charging up four PS3 controllers at once should you choose. Pelican
Australasia (2003) 01 - Nightendday02 - Drought03 - Angel Tears04 - GW05 - Untitled06 - Australasialink (part_1 part_2) Although they already released a self-titled EP that was longer than many bands' regular albums, Australasia is the first official full-length by Chicago art-metal instrumentalists Pelican. It's maybe too easy to draw comparisons to Isis, especially since that band's Aaron Turner signed them and released this album on his label, but there are similarities: the layered guitars, the sense of dynamics, and the expansive, slowly unfolding songwriting approach. One major difference is that while Isis uses vocals, sparingly at least, Pelican don't use any vocals. Another difference is that their songs actually veer into major keys for extended periods. Still, there is plenty of darker minor-key riffing as well, the band splitting the difference between Sabbath-Melvins-Neurosis-style heaviness and more post-rock epic tendencies. This CD has six tracks, clocking in at a

Pelican’s Air Flo Cooler chills out your PlayStation 3
Sony’s PlayStation 3 certainly hasn’t fallen victim to mass outages due to overheating like a competitor has, but there’s nothing wrong with offering a product some cats are sure to nab out of sheer paranoia. Apparently, Pelican is aiming to launch a relatively dashing cooling device that hopefully won’t encourage your machine to internally fry, and while the Air Flo Cooler does a commendable job in looking the part, this thing definitely elongates your already lengthy machine. Pelican in Flight
#427 Pelican in Flight Larger Image. The abstract emergence is interrupted by a sketchblog item. This is from the time in Australia, by the beach in Narrabeen travelling with Josh & Amy. More from that time coming up. A journal and a blog about our trip, frustratingly delayed. And even as I write there are sketches of the mountain brewing. Mt. Lyford is glowing outside as I write I I want to capture those moods. I have added the Sketchblog Category, and will update the whole blog retrospectively. There, done, I now have a sketchblog for 2006-7 year of the sketch. What qualifies posts for this category? They reflect my life as I sketch it, outer life & inner life. Hmmm, they all do that… perhaps it is to do with my purpose, these are a journal of travels, even in my own circles. ~ Technorati tags: art digital painting drawing sketch sketchesdigital art tablet_pc tablet new+zealand sketchblog painter corel artrage

#407 Pelican Larger Image. Our week in Australia was a really interesting bird watching week. Amy was quite focussed on it, and I want to sketch everyone I saw. Here are the first two, beautiful big fat pelicans that hung out by our swimming spot. These birds are the icon for this area. I don’t think I saw many, if any of these on the South coast where I grew up. ~ Technorati tags: art digital painting drawing sketch pastel digital art coloured pencils art tablet_pc tablet natural+media new+zealand sketchblog gicleeprint moleskine painter_X
