I never thought that I would ever in a million years, find myself in agreement with this woman. However, because I am a Paleo-Conservative, A lover of American history and a respecter of old fashioned American values, this one stuck a cord with me. Peggy Noonan took Republicans to task, piling on the evidence that the Republican "brand" is tarnished.
Perhaps the Republican troubles go deeper than a little tarnish and only some Democratic rust will shine the Republicans up. Explanation:
When do you feel more conservative: When money's low and your neighbors are acting up or when you live off your fathers trust fund in his gated mansion?
I tripped over this today. It's an interview with Peggy Petrilli conducted by Women of Web 2.0, an internet webcast apparently from February this year, after Peggy's resignation. From her column: And I quote: I am out of step. There is something that is upsetting others whom I care about and whose thoughts are often not unlike my own. And it's not hitting me the same way. I won't quote the rest of it. Go read it for yourselves. Peggy, all I am going to say this. As a white man of 35 years. I am highly offended at Jeremiah Wright's comments, I will not insult the Gospel of My Lord Jesus Christ, not the profession or high calling of a Minister of the Gospel, by calling that race baiting fool, a Reverend. Why? I'll tell you why. Number one, I, nor any White man living today, put anyone in the black race in chains, Slavery ended in 1865. When former Reagan speechwriter and one-time GW Bush enabler Peggy Noonan writes an op-ed, you know it's time to turn off your brain. Noonan, who coined vacuous slogans like "a thousand points of light", thinks the ideal presidential campaign would be a cross between a John Wayne movie and a Chevrolet commercial. Not that there's anything horrendously wrong with either, but some people foolishly prefer discussion of actual ideas when it's time to elect a president. Not Noonan, who understands the power of gauzy images and coded catchprases to manipulate conventional wisdom,
The latest example is Noonan's op-ed in yesterday's Wall Street Journal. Noonan, the extremely well-off author of seven best-selling books, presumes to speak for average Americans and presumes to judge Obama's

It’s tempting just to shriek. It’s a simple enough question afterall; “will you be home for supper?” This is information I need in advance, from all six of us. Everyone has plans but no-one can be nailed down to a time table even if a hammer was available. No-one understands. You can’t take two sick children to the supermarket. You can’t announce to everyone “we still have to eat you know!” It’s one of those annoying illnesses, the kind that lingers for day upon day. The predominant symptom is a temperature, a fever. It’s the kind of fever that hovers around 99 degrees for a blink or two, but then reverts to normal. Each child needs one full fever free day before returning to school. After the 99 degree temperature is duly noted, each child proceeds to swing

A good shot is worth working on until you are fully satisfied. I went back and worked on this one after discussing it with a few friends and trying things out. Here is the final and I am VERY satisfied with it.By cropping out the road and most of the close rocks, I took away elements that were not adding to the value of the picture and also managed to lower the horizon putting the lighthouse and the lady at a rule of thirds focal point. I know I am self congratulating on this one, but I like it a lot! :)
So what is a reasonable amount of post processing? At what level does an image go from a processed photograph to graphic art? Many purists would suggest that any post processing is a sin. Those same people do not consider that when they send their photos to a lab for printing, some post processing is being done by the lab itself! Moreover, when you choose pre-set camera settings on a digital camera (portrait/Indoor/Cloudy/Sports/etc...), these are post processing that the camera computer does to the image before it saves it. So what is the limit? In this post I am showing a before and after image of the lighthouse at Peggy's Cove. The photograph was taken in a lull between showers. Everyone came out to take pictures then and as you can see the scene was crowded. My vision was not that. I w
Peggy's Cove again. I should have spent the day there. There is so much to see and photograph in that little village, it is worth an outing on its own. Someday I hope to organize a painters and photographers trip there. A worthy expedition!
Last year's trip to Halifax, dispite the rainy weather, yeilded a nice crop of photographs. I am still savoring them. Bringing them out one at a time, like one would do with a box of good chocolates. Here is one from Peggy's Cove. The house in the middle (only the bottom third of it is showing) is Peggy's Cove Bed And Breakfast. Now that is a place to stay!
In some ways I am really happy to see the rise of Huckabee in the Republican race as this is causing many conservatives to question the direction the party has moved. In the past Republicans such as Ronald Reagan have used the religious right to get votes but have typically only thrown them a few bones. Now that the religious right has become dominant in the party, many Republicans are questioning whether this is the direction they really want the party to move in. Peggy Noonan writes that the increased importance of religion in the Republican race is not progress. She writes:
Christian conservatives have been rising, most recently, for 30 years in national politics, since they helped elect Jimmy Carter. They care about the religious faith of their leaders, and their interest is legitimate. Faith is a shaping force. Lincoln got grilled on it. But there is a sense in Iowa now that faith has been heightened as a determining factor in how to vote, that such things as executive ability, p

Peggy Noonan has made a number of excellent points in recent months. She has questioned John McCain’s decision to pander to the religious right and written favorably of opposition to the war from both Chuck Hagel and John Kerry. In July she was even quite critical of George Bush. Now I see that that her views on Barack Obama have improved from last December when she considered him The Man from Nowhere.
Mr. Obama often seems to be thinking when he speaks, too, and this comes somehow as a relief, in comparison, say, to Hillary Clinton and President Bush, both of whom often seem to be trying to remember the answer they’d agreed upon with staff. What’s the phrase we use about education? Hit Search Function. Hit Open. Right-click. “Equity in education is essential, Tim . . .”
You get the impression Mr. Obama trusts himself to think, as if something good might happen if he does. What a concept. Anyway, I’ve started to lean forward a little when he talks.

I spent some time in Halifax on business and got a free day to go sight seeing last Saturday. It was rainy and overcast all day, but it was the perfect setting to go see the coves and fishing towns on the southern east coast of the island. We made it from Halifax to Lunenburg passing, of course, through Peggy's Cove.I couldn't paint at all. It was wet, windy and just not the weather to bring out paper and try to do anything with it except fly it! I did, however, get a lot of reference photos and made a lot of mental notes which I will translate into sketches and paintings soon I hope. The place that I was most drawn to in the day trip was Mahone Bay. An absolute dream like location for painting. I wonder if I were to arrange a group painting trip to Halifax sometime next summer what would be the response? We would need at least a dozen people to make it worth while and get good discounts. Any takers out there??

The always well written Peggy Noonan column today suggests that she is uncomfortable with President Bush’s lack of gloominess with respect to his current difficulties. Noonan makes references to Lyndon Johnson and Abraham Lincoln and refers to the struggles they faced at the lowest levels of their Presidencies. Noonan apparently is not satisfied with the President’s level of suffering and self pity. As if having a bad attitude somehow corresponds to being an effective leader.Though Carter was a horrible President he struggled as well with his Presidential problems. Did this inner doom make him a better President? Where is Noonan on this? Where was Noonan on Harry Truman’s lonely days in the Oval Office? I find it quite ironic that the woman who wrote President Reagan’s uplifting and optimistic address to the nation after the Challenger disaster now has a problem with George Bush’s positive outlook.Noonan is usually dead on but accusing the President of being too optimistic is

Little Peggy March, age 15 years old, only ever had one big hit during her decade with RCA Records, but that song, "I Will Follow Him," spent three weeks at the number one spot on the charts and even topped the R&B charts for a week as well. It pretty well helped define the early girl-group sound, as much as the Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack" or "Great Big Kiss" did the later end of the musical genre. Her subsequent hits, "I Wish I Were a Princess" (which was featured prominently in John Waters' period romp Hairspray) and "Hello Heartache, Goodbye Love," scored much lower in the Top 40. RCA continued to record March for ten years, right into the early '70s, but she never scored an American hit of any consequence after early 1964. By contrast, in Europe, she was a popular recording artist for many years and scored several major hits, especially in Germany, where she moved in 1969.Margaret Battavio, aka Little Peggy March, had dreamt of a singing career for most of her young life,
Take a look at Peggy Noonan's opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, "He's Got Guts: In Praise of Chuck Hagel." Here's an excerpt:But Mr. Hagel said the most serious thing that has been said in Congress in a long time. This is what we're here for. This is why we're here, to decide, to think it through and take a stand, and if we can't do that, why don't we just leave and give someone else a chance? Mr. Hagel has shown courage for a long time. He voted for the war resolution in 2002 but soon after began to question how it was being waged. This was before everyone did. He also stood against the war when that was a lonely place to be. Senate Democrats sat back and watched: If the war worked, they'd change the subject; and if it didn't, they'd hang it on President Bush. Republicans did their version of inaction; they supported the president until he was unpopular, and then peeled off. This is almost not to be criticized. It's what politicians do. But it's not what Mr. Hagel
I used to be almost amused by the attempts of black studies professors to raise rather obscure individuals into places of great prominence. Over the years I've gotten over that. The reason is my understanding of women's history has grown deeper. Just as the Negro League was important, so was a League of Our Own.Like African-Americans do with historical black figures, I find a lot of satisfaction in the accomplishments of women who achieved much despite the obstacles they faced.Often times those accomplishments were, necessarily, made outside the main current. Jazz is at its core African-American. But it was also the stage for a very accomplished woman.Peggy Gilbert started playing the saxophone in 1920. I also can blow the horn in a rudimentary manner. So perhaps I am showing my narcissism when I admit finding a woman who can swing a sax to be pretty darn sexy. But in the case of Peggy, that reaction is not total flake:The sexophone was not considered a lady-like instrument back

I've been in the stash contest - mainly sewing up some knits into tops. Yesterday I found some Juliette in a really nice denim blue color which, of course, I had to buy. Now what to do with it?? I'm in the 350e club! I ordered my machine yesterday during the Super Bowl Sale at my local dealer. It should be here soon. I am not a total newbe to embroidery. I have a 7570 but the embroidery on that is about 11 years old now. Love the sewing machine but wanted to update embroidery capabilities.
I have learned so much on the Coverpro thread, I thought it would be nice to start one here for the embroidery machines. Lots of info in the reviews on these machines but its a little harder to find.

There is also a PDF file on this page showing the designs that come on the machine.

Its time for our 2007 Charity Contest. This will be my first time moderating a contest so be easy on me!!! The contest will start September 10 and go through October 31st. The real winners in this contest are the recipients of our efforts but Interface Austrialia (Fitz like a glove ironing board manufacturers) are donating prizes.
The rules:
1. You earn one point for every garment or item sewn.
2. All items sewn are to be donated for charitable purposes. If an item was not intended to be a donation but turns into one, it will still count. Items that are not sewn "from scratch" but are altered for ease of wear by nursing home residents, wheel chair users, injured service personnel, etc., will still count.
3. You will receive one point for each item sewn or altered. Pairs of gloves or socks count as one item, but a pair of gloves and a scarf would be two items, even if they match and go to the same person.
4. Patterns or techniques need to be reviewed. If you don't use a pattern
I know a lot of people have bought silk weight power dry. I have it in a couple of colors and haven't made anything yet. I just spent $70 on Cuddle Duds (2 shirts, 1 pant) for my DIL (they've moved from TX to PA and she is already cold) but was wondering if the silk weight powerdry could be used to make more. Since I already have it, they would be "free"!!!Last post by Leora at Sun 14 Oct 2007 11:00:12 PM Total posts: 11
