      My Peers
It's weird thinking that the same people that you study with, that you spend your free time with, that you walk around campus passing are some of the people that you will be competing against for professional school slots (like medical school). My school has a very high proportion of budding physicians (at least during freshmen year), but I am glad that there is not excess competitiveness between

He opened his mouth to announce his presence again and quickly take care of the service call... but the sight of an unknown woman...

Is anyone surprised? The British jury privileged with the opportunity to send seven Islamaniacs accused of plotting the most spectacular terrorist attack since September 11, 2001 to legal martyrdom, hadn’t the nerve to do so. Evidently they found greater accord with the defence which proposed these gentlemen had no intention whatsoever of simultaneously blowing up [...]

      Virginity and Your Peers
Some teens use the word "virgin" as an insult, especially teenage guys who are trying to seem cool. They might use slang terms such as "popped her cherry" to describe having sex with a girl for the first time. Girls might similarly tease or shun their virgin girlfriends. The opposite may also be true: some girls might scoff at non-virgin friends, calling them mean names. Treating people badly based on their choices about sexuality can result in deeply hurt feelings because of the very personal nature of these decisions. One friend might be considering having sex for the first time, and need someone to talk with about the pros and cons of doing so. Because this kind of decision is so personal, an effective way to handle the subject among friends is to talk about your own experiences and why

      "Better Than Its Peers" Filter
In precarious times like these in the markets, it becomes doubly important to focus on companies with strong underlying fundamentals. If you feel compelled to make a bet on the long side at the moment you are best served by choosing companies that are not only growing, but ones that also have better balance sheets and earnings track records than their peers. To identify such companies I came up with a simple filter that looks for companies exhibiting the following traits:1) Better than industry average balance sheet in terms ofdebt to equity ratio and current ratio;2) Better than industry average net profit margins;3) Projected EPS growth of 20% or more for next year and forthe next five years;4) Market capitalization of $1 Billion or more;5) A history of earnings reliability, having excee

      Elia honored by peers
Hillsborough Superintendent MaryEllen Elia's peers think she's doing swell. The Florida Association of School Administrators has honored her with the Lamp of Knowledge award. Elia was recognized for giving teachers their largest raises in 20 years. (That was last year's 10 percent raise, but all the more interesting in light of today's spirited debate about whether this year's 8 percent raise can really be called so generous when teachers are having to work longer hours.) Also highlighted: Elia's work with state leaders on a performance pay plan (another sore spot with some teachers) and her collaboration with national leaders on the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind. Plus, people apparently were impressed that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has chosen Hillsborough for a project on addressing the achievement gap. Elia was nominated by School Board Chairman Jack Lamb, who received the award in 2003.

He’s worked with Sean Price in Detroit, continues to work with his man Guilty Simpson and is expanding on his Caltroit project with Aftermath’s Bishop Lamont. He’s also sending cuts back and forth with Pharoahe Monche showing that some of hip hop brightest have taken notice of Black Milk’s beats and want in on the dopeness. Milk talks about working with Sean Price (of Boot Camp Clik fame): Recording with Sean Price, that was crazy! The first three days we were in the studio, we really didn’t get any work done because we were just kicking it and joking. Sean has so much energy. He has a lot of life and energy when he comes to the studio, so it’s nothing but jokes and stories all day. On the fourth day, we recorded our first song. After that, we were just knocking shit out. Hereditary Peers Thick As Sh1t?
With the cash for honours scandal (have they found out whodunnit yet?) tending to make one focus on the people who either buy or are otherwise awarded peerages, it is easy to forget those who have their titles handed to them on a plate, so to speak. These are the hereditary peers, who get their titles for doing nothing more than being born into a family with a title and, normally,  living long enough to acquire it. If we connect these people with Gordon Brown’s outrage a few years ago that Oxford and Cambridge don’t like admitting common people, however clever they are and his plan afterwards that fifty percent of the population should go to university, there is something interesting. (I should note here that 50% is another way of saying half, which might make more sense to the 60% of children who leave school illiterate and innumerate). The interesting thing is that the aristocracy or hereditary peers or whatever you want to call them tend to be educated at the best schoo

Hayden Is Loved By His Peers
Hayden Christiansen may be best known for his work in Star Wars Episodes 1-3, but there's so much more to this predominately indie actor's repertoire. Beyond his good looks (awesome photo shoot much?), there's a driven young man who isn't just working for the paycheck. And in the cover story for the most recent issue of the Canadian men's magazine, Toro, two of his recent costars are quick to attest to that fact. * From Jessica Alba: "He's so warm and loving and sweet. And not an egomaniac or egotistical or anything like that...there are a lot of actors out there -- they like to be famous and they like to act like movie stars, and all that, and it doesn't feel like that's what Hayden's goal is." * From Kevin Kline: "He's a regular, not to say he's not extraordinary and special, but...he's a man. He's not some sort of aberrant, artsy-fartsy, self-absorbed, phony, pathetic, neurotic, attention-seeking...whats the word -- freak. I me
