In the past month or so not only have I seen someone being hit by a car and almost been hit myself two days ago, but now a judge has let a woman off for killing a little girl and the comments to the article clearly reflect the driver-centric culture we live in. University Place, a relatively short street in lower Manhattan, links Washington Square Park to the south with Union Square to the north. A thoroughfare frequented by NYU students, neighborhood residents, and office workers, the street enjoys a democratic mix of bars, coffee shops, diners, restaurants, boutiques, laundries, shoe repair shops, florists, and even a bowling alley. A few haunts of old New York can be found along in here - the Knickerbocker Bar & Grill, a favorite of the late Brooke Astor, and Patsy's, one of Frank Sinatra's preferred stops for pizza pie. Residents try to keep straight three similarly-sounding places - Café Spice, Space Market, and Spice.University Place is pedestrian in both senses - it's an ordinary street, nothing to write home about, but it's also a g

I?ve posted a lot about pedestrian accidents over the past several weeks. It seems as if we hear about a pedestrian death almost every week. The Seattle PI just reported on another case where an elderly woman was run over by a motorist while walking half-way through a cross-walk. The woman, 94-year-old Ruby Blood, had made it half way across the street when the traffic light turned green. The motorist proceeded through the cross-walk and killed Ms. Blood. The death was likely instantaneous.
Is the motorist legally responsible? Probably. A specific law ? RCW 46.61.235 ? requires a motorist approaching a cross walk to stop or remain stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross in a marked cross walk. This means that even though the light turned gre

Here's another report about a pedestrian being struck by a car while crossing an intersection in the early morning hours in Seattle.
If you recall, there was some reports about the increase of pedestrian-auto accidents during daylight saving time. The theory being that when daylight saving time goes into effect, it is much darker outside in the morning hours. Thus, more pedestrians are struck by motorists who cannot adequately see the person when it is so dark out. See also Wikipedia's report on daylight saving time and the increase of pedestrian accidents.

During this period of dark, rainy and foggy conditions, drivers are reminded to watch for pedestrians along school bus routes, intersections and transit stops

*Director/producer John Singleton has become involved in a fatal automobile/pedestrian accident. It happened Thursday night.
According to reports, Singleton was driving around 8:00 p.m. on a Los Angeles street when a female pedestrian, not in a crosswalk, suddenly stepped out in front of his car.
Police told the site that Singleton immediately stopped and waited for police and ambulances to arrive. The woman, 57-year-old Constance Russell, was taken to a nearby hospital where she died Friday morning.
According to police, Singleton was not speeding at the time and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Cops say their investigation has concluded and they've determined that this is a "very, very unfortunate accident."
Singleton, who produced the movie "Illegal Tender," opening in theaters this weekend, will not be cited for any violation.

Those white lines at intersections? They are for pedestrians. A pedestrian is a fragile thing on the street - 70% water, and no match for hundreds of pounds of steel and glass.
So when you see someone in the middle of the street, walking between those white lines, you must wait your turn. It’s not a long wait, about 5 seconds (or 10 for those using walkers). But it is a wait that you must make by law (and common sense). So for instance the women in the white Jeep Cherokee that went through the intersection this morning on the square on her way to Revelations who passed within 10″ of me while I was just over halfway across the street . . .
What’s your hurry?
Nevermind that you’re being highly impatient and inconsiderate, but you put my walking bag of water and bones in danger. You effectively block me from site of other drivers and signal to everyone at that intersection that there are no pedestrians in the cross walk.
It’s bizarre to see this behavio
Author: Dwight H. ZimpelMany people considering traveling to Vietnam are concerned about crossing the street in larger cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It seems as if there are no (observed) crosswalks; and pedestrians appear to be in great danger. It is of little consolation, but pedestrians only account for about 10 per cent of those killed in transportation accidents in Vietnam. By contrast, drivers and riders of motorbikes account for about 60 per cent of fatalities. These figures come from a study dated 2001.DO NOT STEP BACK!!This is a Basic Rule of the Road for pedestrians in Vietnam. Once you make the commitment to cross ANY street, road or highway DO NOT STEP BACK if you see a motorbike or bicycleapproaching you. This is one of the unwritten rules of the road in Vietnam. Motorbike and bicycle riders negotiate pedestrian "obstacles" by passing behind them.If you change your mind about crossing the street follow this advice: When you change your mind after st

Waynesboro Police Department Media Release 04-13-07 Pedestrian Injured in Crash Waynesboro Police responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash in the 200 block of N. Charlotte Ave. at around 8:30 P.M. last night. The incident occurred as a 25 year old Staunton man ran from between parked vehicles on the west side of N. Charlotte into the path of a northbound 1991 Honda 4dr, driven by a 23 year old Waynesboro man. When will we see this kind of courage in the streets. In Sweden we have a zebra crossing law. It obliges car drivers to give way for pedestrians who intend to cross the street at zebra crossings. I have noticed that if a pedestrian shows low intent to cross and just stands and waits, the car drivers will usually ignore him/her. The more I read about climate change, the more resoluteness I show at the zebra crossings. My Swedish low key mentallity disappears when I encounter cars, especially SUVs. I take the initiative and don't let a single car pass me. It may seem a bit dangerous but I clearly signal that I am intending to cross and I wear bright reflex bands. Some drivers look annoyed but then I give them a severe cat eye stare.

As expected, Clearwater officials agreed Thursday to let a developer for a major resort remove a pedestrian bridge from the project. The proposed $2-million walkway would have stretched from the parking garage of the Aqualea Resort and Residences on S Gulfview Boulevard to the beach. NJR Development Co. was to have built the bridge, but the city would have reimbursed it.
The garage has been re-configured, and the bridge is no longer needed, city officials said. Instead, a pedestrian crossing will take its place. In addition to condos and condo-hotel units, the Aqualea will include a parking garage with 750 spaces, including 400 available for public use.
