Everyone has emergencies pop up in their life sometimes. These unplanned events can be costly and potentially crippling if you don't have enough money put aside to remedy them. If your car suddenly breaks down and you have no way to get to work, you can't simply wait until payday rolls around to get the repairs done. When you find yourself short of cash and in high need, there are several types of
I am so happy to share on this site about my very first paycheck from Google Adsense. Now I can consider myself a certified Google Adsense earner...lols.. It wasn't easy and it wasn't that fast to be able to receive this amount. To be honest, I earned this amount since I started blogging publicly on August 2007 and that is almost one year now. Call it carzy but I really treasure this from the bott
A Psalm for Gaia
The Earth is my mother, I shall not want.
She nurtures me in green pastures;
she freshens me with flowing waters.
She restores my body and awakens my soul.

I will not fear death,
for the essence of life is within me,

July is around the corner, and for Ben and I, this means a three paycheck month! Many employers, like ours, pay their employees using a 26 pay period cycle versus the traditional 24. Of course, this means each check is a little less, but twice a year we get the third magical paycheck. These extra paychecks feel [...]
I first thought this movie wasn't that great, but I watched it again today and got a lot of enjoyment out of it.One thing I didn't really like was some apparent hypocrisy. The whole film is about how Ben Affleck, the hero, had used a machine to see into his future and change it for the better. The majority of the movie is spent watching him alter his destiny time and again. Then, halfway through, he

Like most working class college students, I have held a variety of jobs over my life. But I never had that resume that I craved, filled with oddball jobs, diverse and calling for the double take. I was never a alligator feeder at the zoo or a orderly at the morgue. You know, real cocktail [...]
A paycheck advance, otherwise known as a payday loan or cash advance loan, can come in handy if you find yourself faced with some unexpected expenses. Wether it is for medical bills, tuition payments or groceries, a fast paycheck advance can help get you through tough times. Unlike a personal loan, a credit check is usually not required to be approved for a paycheck advance. Also, the repayment terms are generally much shorter with this type of loan, sometimes only two weeks. One advantage to a paycheck advance loan as opposed to a personal loan is that the application process is short, easy, and can more often than not be completed entirely online from the comfort of your home. When you apply for a personal loan you have to make a trip to the bank, wait for a response on your application,

When I moved here one of the financial mysteries for me were the taxes on my paycheck, what would be deducted and more importantly how much should I withhold to meet my tax obligations. I learnt the importance of understanding this the hard way with a hefty tax bill, due to not withholding enough taxes during the year. Luckily I had sufficient funds to pay the tax liability and there was no fine as this was the first year I owed taxes. If I owe taxes again next year, there will be a $300+ fine. With this in mind, I thought I would summarize my learning experiences around the taxes in ones paycheck and how they are calculated. I work in large Fortune 100 corporation, which outsources it paycheck process to a national payroll company, so I imagine it contains most of the common elements pres
The phrase “living paycheck to paycheck” gets thrown around a lot, but the truth is, I don’t really understand what it means.

Spending your entire paycheck (or more) and [...]

April 8, 2008While Simon Cowell isn’t known for being generous with his praise, he puts his money where his mouth is when it comes to charity. The American Idol judge is donating a day’s pay to Idol Gives Back . After traveling to Africa and touring sites in the US last year as part of the inaugural Idol Gives Back campaign, “Simon saw first-hand children in extremely impoverished conditions,” a source close to Cowell says. “He donated his paycheck then and he had no hesitation in donating his paycheck again this year.” Charities receiving donations as part of this year’s Idol Gives Back include: The Children’s Defense Fund, Children’s Health Fund, The Global Fund, Make It Right, Malaria No More, and Save the Children. Get More of Your Paycheck into Savings [How To] The Simple Dollar finance blog tackles a reader's call for help on how to chip away at her household's paycheck-to-paycheck habit and start really saving away money. In six pretty easy steps, Trent explains how you can carve out money, put it somewhere you can't get to it, and do that every month. The first important step:Set up a savings account in a separate place that isn't easy to access. I find that online banks like ING Direct are a great place to do this, as the money in this account can be accessed if you take the time to log on and execute the transfer, but you can't easily just write a check or use a card to drain it of money, plus you can set up sub accounts for each of your savings goals.By the end of the list, the "fat" has

As women have taken on more traditionally male high-powered jobs, this has created a strong ripple affect on their love lives. In Japan the programmer credited to thinking up the extremely popular Nintendo game Brain Training refused to be paid 15 million dollars in royalties. Mister Kawashima said people should only be entitles to money they actually worked for and that he is perfectly satisfied with his annual 70.000 euros paycheck. He is planning to use the money on research for projects he is already working on for years. Not taking all the money does not make him very popular with his family and friends. They seem to have their own ideas about spending all the money.
I get a lot of emails from loan officers who are currently working for a mortgage company, but are looking to advance their career and go out on their own. When they see the kind of money that can be made in this business, its no wonder they arent satisfied with their 50% commission spread (or even less!). When I first started in the industry, my commission spread was 20% of the yield spread premium or YSP. And, if that wasnt bad enough, we worked on teams of three people.
Before you decide to close your bank account because of continuous debits from the payday loan companies, speak with your bank manager and know the policies regarding ACH transactions after the account is closed. Some banks do have the policy regarding ACH transaction that allows them to force open a closed account and allow the debit from any payday loan company if it's done within a certain time frame after the account is closed. If your bank has such policy and can force open your closed account, you might end up owing a legal $1,000 bank charge and being reported to the chexsystem. You might have averted the whole mess by owing barely legal (or not at all legal) payday loan companies. The best thing to do is to go and meet with the branch manager in person and know about the ACH transactions after an account is closed.
Just in case, if you are dealing with a bank that has such policies, explain your situation to them. Don't feel embarrassed. Show the letters sent to the payda
Just a quick note to share I received my last paycheck, including vacation time payout, this morning. I more than met my savings goals - I exceeded them. I know the figures can seem daunting, however many people go abroad with far less than me, and either work or volunteer, or stick to the cheaper regions. All I can say is I did it my way (Sinatra-style), and each person has to figure out how much is enough for him/herself.
Going forward, I’ll be updating my new spreadsheet, RTW Actual Costs, which should be very valuable info for those planning to visit similar countries in the near future.
I’m heading to Grand Central to catch a train to JFK airport in 3 hours. My next update will be from the middle of the Pacific Ocean (even if just to say “I made it” again)!

This question is another tricky one because it depends on who is asking it. If you’re 18 and asking this question, well, I’d say you’re starting off right by asking, and if you are putting away 10% - even if you’re only making $20,000 per year, you’re saving $2,000/year and in 50 years you’d be [...]

Weekly (43%) – This is what I voted on (and also the most popular)! I feel that the more frequent my paycheck, the fewer days my money is on loan to my employer. It might drive my accountant crazy, but that’s a headache that falls under someone else’s responsibility! I can see that this is a problem for employees that are getting checks as their paycheck, but those people should really look into getting direct deposit through their bank. Nice, easy and most frequent gets my vote!
Bi-weekly (35%) – The standard of North American companies and almost just as popular as the weekly paychecks! I wonder how many people picked this option just because it is what they are used to (in which case they should have chose “I don’t care&rdqu

Above is a table that I use to divide each paycheck (though I usually do it on a sticky note so it never looks so neat!). This helps me keep track of where I need to send the money coming into my checking account so I don't accidentally spend something I shouldn't. The numbers are just made up.First I deposit my check and subtract 15% for savings (another 15% is already taken out for my 401k). I subtract my readjustment/spread account payment, any bill payments that were made from my bill pay account (a separate high-yield interest checking account - ING), and any budgeted items coming up that week. In the right side I figure out how much I need to transfer to ING, which is the readjustment/spread amount, the bill pay balances, and the savings (my savings is presently being used for maximum debt repayment). At the bottom I take the current balance of my checking account, add the deposit amount and subtract the ING transfer amount. That gives me my actual account balance. Next to it I
I noticed that Asia companies usually send their paychecks out once a month while North American companies usually send them out every two weeks (bi-weekly). Personally, I believe that the more frequent it is, the better because I’m happier on payday even though I am not living paycheck to paycheck.
I also believe that most people will be better able to space out their spending if each paycheck is smaller but more frequent. So, here’s a poll for you. Which payment frequency do you rather have?

David Beckham finally returned (again) from his injury to play last night. Things went pretty well until, guess what? He was injured again. He is starting to remind me of Kerry Wood.England's David Beckham will undergo a scan after he suffered a knee injury playing for LA Galaxy on Wednesday, casting doubt on his fitness ahead of next month's Euro 2008 qualifiers.Beckham, who is hoping to take part in England's qualifiers against Israel and Russia in September, was substituted in the 33rd minute of the Superliga final against Mexican team Pachuca after a challenge with Fernando Salazar.I still don't understand soccer terms. He was injured after a challenge? What does that mean? Did a guy from Pachua come up to him and slap his face with a white glove?"It's just gone from one thing to another thing. Maybe it is a sign to give it a rest, get it right and not come back until it is right," Beckham told reporters after the game which Galaxy lost on penalties.Or maybe he is just old an

When my wife and I married 2 years ago, we were literally living paycheck to paycheck. A paycheck would come in and we would pay the bills we had received, the minimums on the cards and loans, buy the essentials like food, splurge a little, and then try to save whatever was left over. After we were married we decided to tackle our finances. We wanted to manage our personal finances, not just sit along for the ride. One of the best feelings I got was when I realized we no longer lived paycheck to paycheck. We started saving off the front end of our paychecks instead of the back end, saving money for bills that did not arrive regularly (like insurance), saving for retirement, delegating a huge chunk of our savings rate to paying off debt after having established an emergency fund, stopped carrying balances on the credit cards, and only splurging after all those things (and food and bills) had been paid. Now that we have money sitting in a bank in emergency fund and our bill savings, we have

I really want my paycheck. I'm working so hard and I want to see a little bit of a reward here. I don't get paid until the 5th. I've already planned out what I'm going to do with the approximately $400 I'll have earned. Over half will go to my parents to cover July's rent. The other half will be divided in half yet again. $100 will go towards paying off my credit card bill. The other $100 will be spending money and grocery money for the next two weeks until I get paid again. That's right, Janna will be fiscally independent! I'm excited for that. Well, sure, not entirely independent. I still depend on my parents to pay my tuition and all. Sometimes I feel a little guilty because compared to my friends they give me an awful lot. I understand that part of it is because they're trying to help me get over my illness(es). They want me to not have to worry about money. The other part of it is that they don't spend their money on themselves very often. Most of what they earn goes towa
While Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts he never took a paycheck. Now he is considering making the same pledge if he is elected president:
speaking with reporters, Romney said he would likely accept the presidential salary of $400,000 annually but donate the money.
”I haven’t really thought ahead that far,” Romney said at first. “There are some questions I haven’t forecasted, perhaps because that would seem presumptuous of me.”
Then, he added: “I presume I would take the salary and then I would donate at least that amount - or more - to charity.”
Pop king Michael Jackson will be paid a staggering $10 million for attending the birthday party of a Brunei royal. Prince Azim is planning to celebrate his 25th birthday in an English country estate this weekend (26-27May07) and has paid Jackson to be the guest of honor - even though he is aware the “Thriller” hitmaker won't sing.
Absolutely no expense has been spared for his party - Michael Jackson is his all-time idol and he said he'd pay whatever it took to get him over. Even though Michael won't be performing, the very fact that he'll be in this stately home mingling with all of the prince's pals makes it worth every penny to Azim."

I have good news for college seniors worried about lining up a job.
Businesses plan to hire nearly 20 percent more grads this year than last year, according to a new survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
The surge means starting salaries for almost every major are up significantly, and a fatter first paycheck for most newcomers entering the workforce this month.
I still remember how droolingly happy that first real paycheck made me seven years ago.
It represented responsibility and possibility. It bought a ginormous television and the most comfortable puffy green couch known to man.
Then the second paycheck came, and the third. After a few dozen, they no longer thrilled. I started fretting that I wasn’t making more. Then I found out how much my lawyer friends made, and I got depressed.
You’ll soon understand, newbies. That first paycheck is a mainline of pure, uncut joy, but the glow evaporates quickly.
