Before each of my market posts there is a buy/sell call (at owner's risk!). At the start of the month I usually try to call the flavour for the coming month based on overall market conditions; which I have marked on the chart below. What is clear is having waited so long for the market to roll over (basically spent most of 2007 waiting), I jumped too early on the bullish bandwagon this year. The p

By Adam Shell, USA TODAYNEW YORK — A pause in interest rate cuts by the nation's central bank could prove to be refreshing for the stock market.Investors who once clamored for rate cuts to stabilize a slowing economy and financial system on the verge of a meltdown now are calling for a halt to the Federal Reserve's easing cycle. Wall Street is now of the mind that further cuts would do more harm than good. The 3.25 percentage-point reduction in the fed funds rate to 2% since September has restored a sense of calm to markets. But the cheap money has also eroded the value of the U.S. dollar and contributed to an alarming rise in the price of gasoline and food, putting pressure on cash-strapped consumers. In a statement last week, the Fed hinted that its campaign to lower borrowing costs may

The Fed appeared to signal a pause in its easing cycle Wednesday when stating ‘The substantial easing of monetary policy to date, combined with ongoing measures to foster market liquidity, should help to promote moderate growth over time and to mitigate risks to economic activity’. Of course the downside risks to growth are still highlighted, as they should, but the Fed’s policy of aggressively cutting rates in recent months has failed to translate into lower borrowing costs for consumers while the credit crunch persisted. Markets won’t be convinced the Fed will remain on hold if economic data deteriorates further, particularly in terms of employment. But for now, the Fed would appear to have adopted a ‘wait and see’ policy and this will have implications for currency markets a

The Dollar rose to an almost one-month high versus the Euro on Tuesday, buoyed by growing views the Federal Reserve is ready to signal a pause in its interest rate cutting-campaign and by weak European economic data. Analysts expect the FOMC to cut the benchmark lending rate by 25bp to 2% and indicate a pause for now, after an aggressive exercise that has cut rates by 300bp since mid-September. While markets are expecting a slightly hawkish tone in the FOMC's statement accompanying the rate decision, poor economic data from the euro zone raised doubts on the ECB's ability too maintain its tough stance on inflation and interest rates. The Sterling was hurt by a warning from policy-maker David Blanchflower that Britain faced a real risk of recession unless the Bank of England took "aggressiv

Whenever I face a challenge, I take 3 minutes to put the Power Pause 3 step formula into work, in my life.It is the best 3 minutes I can ever make of and the best part is, I am doing this as a service to myself, if nothing else (or no one else does). And all it takes is 3 minutes. When I am through, I feel much calmer. That in itself, is pretty much worth it.However, that is not all - things do turn out how I wanted, if not better, in the end. But do not be mistaken that I 'force' my way. That would have resulted in a lot of resistance and I would be alone. On the contrary, the 3 minutes put me into the flow again. (I was challenged only because I was not in alignment, now I realign.) If I was heading the wrong way (and getting a lot of things I did not want on the way), the 3 minutes gave

Time, once again, to engage in my annual predictions and prognostication. This year The Economist has unofficially endorsed my brand of futurology--relatively short term and thematically focused. But first, as usual, a review of how my 2007 predictions panned out:I didn't get Iraq right--I predicted that the draw-down would begin, whereas in reality there was a "surge." I guess I'm still able to underestimate the incompetence of the Democratic Party. Mental note not to make that mistake again. I won't discuss my thoughts on the surge (e.g. the arming of the Sunni tribes for the future clash with the Shi'a establishment over oil revenues after the inevitable US withdrawal) now, but suffice to say I didn't get it right in '07. For what it's worth, I did get the "no war" call on Iran ri
You need to take the Power Pause because you are just a normal being with your fair share of challenges. When you are really distressed though, you may even feel that it is unfair.Firstly, empower yourself; acknowledge that it is your challenge(s) and it is your feeling(s) (that you are feeling). You own it (because you created it), not vice versa, and you are certainly not your feelings nor challenges! You have created such challenge(s) for the purpose of advancing yourself. Now how much you can advance, depends on your ability to respond to your challenge.(At this point, would you cry, "unfair"? Wouldn't that be like walking backwards?)When you take a Power Pause, you are aiding yourself. When you do that, others will naturally gravitate towards you to aid you some more. Finally, no matter

I think you agree that you cannot really understand something until you experience it. You may be aware of it but not really understand it.So it is with the Power Pause. To be able to understand it, put the formula into practice. It is not called the Power Pause for nothing.Take a break, but not another one of those breaks that makes you feel even more tired than before you took it. That is how you replenish your energy; that is why it is a Power Pause. And all it takes is 3 minutes of your time. Why do I need to take a Power Pause?P.s : Do not rush it or think it to be a chore, you are doing this for no one but yourself. Naturally, if you are desperate enough, this is not an issue.(Don't want to read? Listen instead. However, be aware that this blog is written primarily to be read. Also, y
The PowerPause is a 3-minute, 3-step formula for successThis is helpful if you do not have a lot of time to spare. You only have to be sincere and consistent. Do this once a day or more, during your spare moments(but do not rush it) or at the same time everyday. This is really how you can get 'there' from 'here'. Remember that the thinking that got you here can't get you there. This is especially true if you find yourself stuck in a pattern and then often, despite your efforts, you still find yourself within the familiar pattern, (even if there is a little improvement).Over twenty-five years in the makingThis formula is not conceived overnight or on purpose at all. Not that you can't come up with this yourself either, yes, when one is tested, one is often forced to com

Massive burger, massive flavor. Glad I went with the big burger, I was able to keep partying well into the night after the wine tasting trip... ToastedBun ate the sliders & didn’t fare so well. ToastedBun opted for the 2 sliders ($5) with a side of fries (. “The sliders came with a special sauce that was quite tasty!”Sadly, that didn’t prove to be enough to defend ToastedBun’s full-day onslaught of wine tasting. Of course, you were also baked to bajeezus and forgot to tell me that I had called Cottage Inn. When you answered and said, "Whatsup?" I thought about it, and after a 20 second pause I told you that was hungry. You suggested I try a pizza, and I agreed that it was probably a good idea. Then I asked you if you sold pizza and you said that you could make me one. I said I wanted anchovies and something else on my pizza. You asked me what that something else was. We spent five minutes listing toppings until we figured out that I was trying to remember how to say: "Sun dried Tomatoes." When you said: "We'll bake that right up for you," we both started laughing uncontrollably. It was the best pizza I ev

Israel's real estate developers snap up Israel’s few remaining open spaces and transform them into apartments, roads and office buildings while the government planning boards responsible for land management authorize wide-ranging construction projects with alarmingly short-term vision, all in exchange for easy money. Even the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City, a national treasure, are now blocked from view by a new mall that has gone up right outside the Jaffa Gate.
Kieran Hebden is, it has to be said, something of a genius. The groundwork for Pause was laid when Dialogue--his debut solo album under the guise of Four Tet--landed in 1999, an album that redrew the parameters of inventive dance music. A peculiar mix of live-sounding instrumental jazz and technologically super-precise laptop dance trickery, it sounded nothing like Hebden's actual group--the post-rockers Fridge--and, as it happened, very little like anything else in existence. Where Dialogue employed jazz sax and flute in its evocation of a 21st-century jazz meltdown, Pause goes even further, coiling whispers of harp and zither over layer-on-layers of fidgeting, rattling percussion. His inspirations? Well, like his friend and protégé:, Canadian tech-wizard Manitoba (whose Start Breaking My Heart is easily the equal of Pause), Hebden collects sounds and melodies from a dizzying array of places--ancient British folk music, the rattle of typewriter keys, the gurgle of running water, ev
we all have weaknesses. mine is butterfinger. Yeah, ever since in my younger days..apart from all the sweet things, these are the only ones which I eat slowly and never get tired of. well it kinda helps sometimes, whenever I feel confused about something or tired about a day, a way to keep sane for me. Sometimes, a thing to hold on to when nervous, kinda childish I guess, then so what.what does one do..when u realize u are losing yourself with something and that u have forgotten what it is all about. You begin to ask yourself, where does these things go? You stop and think, its been like a long time and still you're stuck with the same old life, the same old ways and same old stuff.. you have gotten over the purpose.. what is it all for? and so I eat a piece of butterfinger...to keep me sane and to pause me amidst these questions that make me sick.
