A couple of days ago I was driving through Homewood Alabama and found a little piece of heaven on earth. Let me be precise though, the little piece of heaven on earth was not the place, but the bite of cake (or Baby Bites as they call them) that I put in my mouth. My [...]

Lots of recipes today! I made puff pastry from scratch. It is far and away the best puff pastry I have ever tasted. I’m modest, I know, but man it’s good. I have, as have many other people, only ever used frozen puff pastry. It is convenient, inexpensive and works very well. I can now proudly say that I have passed the puff pastry trial by fire and joined the ranks of the bloggers who did it b

I love Puffs. who doesn't? In my school days there used to be a canteen and almost daily I used to eat puffs prepared there. Till now, I have never eaten puffs that is more tasty than those canteen puffs. Maybe my mind is fixed with that thought because they were my first puffs. Anyway, after becoming a cook myself, I tried to make puffs, but to be very frank, my puff pastry always ended up in a m

This past week I've had a hard time getting one of my favorite pastries out of my head... Cream Horns! YUM! And when I looked up the recipe here on my site I laughed to see it was almost exactly one year ago that I gave you the recipe! How ironic is that? Just 2 days off. So... I'm thinking it would be kind of fun to make them on May 9th again... perhaps that can be a funny, quirky tradition to make Cream Horns (Lady Locks) every year on May 9th? I actually have made them twice since then and I admit I still haven't found the perfect puff pastry dough. Yes, using the store bought Pepperidge Farm version is much, much easier but it was so greasy that I had a hard time with that. The first and second homemade versions were more like a cookie and not the flaky pastry that I was going

This week my parents were visiting from out of town and we stopped by the local coffee shop Tuesday evening. When we left we had a couple pastries for breakfast the next morning. Imagine my laughter when I cut one of the pastries in half and found... absolutely nothing! The photo might not show it well but the entire inside of the pastry is completely empty. Pure air. LOL. Immediately the phrase "the tomb is empty" went through my head. The bottom of the pastry was colored red but apparently it all must have leaked out during the baking process or they just don't use very much filling at all. In the end, no one ate it anyway and it went into the trash, but it gave us a good laugh. This, my friends, is why homemade baked goodies are often superior to mass-merchandised commercially ba

Rocky Balbino has given me another recipe of "filhóses". This one is made with carrots and follows more or less the same procedure than the one with the pumpkin. There are some Portuguese Christmas tradition that have stayed on in my family although we have been abroad for so long. Some tradition are nicer than others, and this is the case of a delicious pastry done on Christmas and New Year. They are called "Filhóses" or "Velhóses" according to the region in Portugal where they are made, but the recipe is always the same...most of the time! This is the tradition I will now make you discover...for me there is no real Christmas without at least one of my mother's "filhós"Ingredients · 1500g pumpkin (this weight is after the pumpkin was cooked and dried of its residual water) · 600g of flour· 4 eggs (optional)· 20g of live yeast· 5g salt· a (very) small glass of Port wine· sugar and cinnamon1. One of the best (worst?) sins where you are in Paris is going to pastries because you can never know how many of these delicious little things you are going to buy and no need to tell, how much weight you are going to gain as well. Here is a selection of six places to die for. Fauchon: Prices are expensive but the inventories are fascinating. The year was 1886 when Fauchon's first store opened its doors to sell Parisians some of the same delicacies you'll still find there today. Lenôtre: The pastries are perfect, the cakes immaculate and the breads, fresh and irresistible. Admittedly, it’s heavy but what a sinfully tasty treat. Pierre Hermé: He is a French pastry chef that Vogue called "the Picasso of Pastry". It’s funny knowing that Pierre Hermé began his career at the age of 14 as an apprentice to Gaston Lenôtre. Did the student surpass the master? La Maison du Chocolat: One of the premier Paris chocolatiers thanks to its combination of luxe ingredients and decadent but
by Vivian ZhuoHave you ever wonder why not everyone who follows the same recipe gets the same pastry that melts in your mouth. What cause it to turn into a tough doughy mass.First of all, let us study for a minute just what pastry is. It is a mixture of flour, shortening and water. Each grain of flour is thoroughly coated with shortening and then mixed to a dough with the water. Do I hear you say "Well I know that?" Surely you do. But do you know the real knack of putting it together? For here is the real rub. The minute you knead or squeeze pastry that is the moment you make it tough.Do not knead or pat with the hand. You cannot hurt the dough if you will just mix it as a man does when mixing mortar with a hoe. Keep working it back and forth, chopping it each time until well mixed.Use a rolling pin to roll the dough. Should the dough tear, or not come to the desired shape, just fold it into squares or oblongs and then roll again. You can re-roll pastry as often as desired by this meth
BIRD: Buffers, did you fall in?BUFFALO: Very nearly, Birdy. I've been poisoned by the fookin' Chinese.BIRD: You've been eating Barbie dolls again?BUFFALO: No, not that, they poisoned my Lo Mein! I told 'em to hold the MSG, and asked for plum sauce for my egg roll, but they gave me plumbum instead!BIRD: Blimey! They injected plum sauce up your bum?!BUFFALO: No, you plank, they laced my lunch with lead!BIRD: Was that a la carte?BUFFALO: (GROANS) No, it was the white plate special. The bloody china hadn't been properly fired, and it leached lead into my Bung Cow Chicken. I'm fookin' contaminated, mate!BIRD: But, Buffers, how do you know for certain that you've been poisoned?BUFFALO: I'm having all the classic symptoms of those ancient Roman wheezers. They all went bonkers, y'know, from sipping water from lead pipes. They lapped it up cuz it tasted sweet, the stupid berks.BIRD: Ah, I see. . . so you've gone off your twig, then?BUFFALO: I'm getting there. At first I was having

Today, on 6th of June, it´s holiday. It is the Swedish National Day. This day became the Swedish national day in 1983. Previously known as Swedish flag day. It marks the coronation of Gustav Vasa in 1523. This old king defeated the Danes and established Lutheranism in Sweden. This day also marks the adoption of one of our constitutions from 1809.The Swedish Riksdag (parliament) only designated this day a public holiday in 2005. Many immigrants associate the day with receiving Swedish citizenship. They celebrate living in a free and independent country. There are celebrations in Stockholm, 600 kilometers away. I do not know what to do with a holiday in the middle of the week.Anyway, here you are. I hereby give you the recipe of our National Day Pastry. A result of a pastry chef competition. Sweets for your feet? That’s exactly what Vanessa and Angela Simmons, daughters of Rev Run of Run DMC fame have cooked up. Most recently featured on Run’s House the two young entrepreneurs have already reached reality TV fame. Now they have launched a new sneaker line — Pastry. It’s no wonder these two young women have produced a line of fashion footwear — they are the neices of urban fashion moguls Russel Simmons and Kimora Lee Simmons, founders of Phat Farm and Baby Phat. Kimora more recently launched her perfume and makeup line at Sephora.
The line features colorful, mid-priced athletic-inspired shoes in multiple styles for young women.
Every pair of shoes comes with a tube of scented lipgloss attached to it matching the shoe’s theme. Maybe that sweet touch is due to Aunti Kimora’s influence.
According to Elizabeth Wellington, Inquirer Fashion Writer:

The painting utilizes a rather free and in places impasto type painting technique to create an expressive style.
