Devotional - Moses Keeping the Passover, by Faith
Image via WikipediaBy faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them. (Heb_11:28)When Moses boldly led Israel out of Egypt, his fearlessness was based upon his faith in the true and living God. "By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible" (Heb_11:28). His confidence in t

What Explanation Is There For The Darkness That Covered The Earth During The Time Of Passover In 32 A.D.?
Did you know that a PAGAN historian documented the darkness that covered the earth during the time of Passover in 32 A.D.?In approximately 52 A.D., a pagan historian named Thallus, who lived shortly after the resurrection of Christ, wrote about a mysterious darkness that covered the earth during the time of Passover in 32 A.D. Passover In Paradise
I have met many Jewish guests this week and our biggest discussion is about being Jewish and living on a small resort island in a small Caribbean Christian country. It is a very strange idea if you really think about it.Anyway, this year the JCTC (Jewish Community of Turks and Caicos) held a community seder at Beaches resort. $100 per person, no clean up or cooking necessary, servers and drinks included. I could not go bit I hear it went well.My story...I went to IGA the Tuesday before Pesach and they still hadn't put the Passover food out. Luckily there was a lovely Italian jewish couple staying at the resort and taking my Pilates mat classes who gave me 1/2 a box of matzo (enough for me for 8 days). Then I went to IGA this week and the Passover food was out, so I got more stuff. Di

“Kosher for Passover” in the U.S. Army
Today I’m experiencing somewhat of déjà vu. I’ve just read the most recent post on Jewsingreen.com concerning an Orthodox chaplain -- Army Captain Shmuel Felzenberg – serving in Afghanistan. The article is by Lee Lawrence, correspondent of The Christian Science Monitor. In describing Chaplain Felzenberg’s kosher dietary needs, Lawrence says that Felzenberg has “Army-supplied kosher meals. For holidays like Passover, the Army provides supplies, right down to Passover-approved wine.” The U.S. Army has obviously come a long way from my time as an army officer’s wife in Munich, Germany, where the Orthodox chaplain stationed there our first year influenced my husband and me to decide to keep kosher. In those days we did not get kosher food items for Passover from the

Known as the Washington Haggadah because of its presence in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., this manuscript is the Library's most important illuminated Hebrew manuscript. The illustration here depicts the Messiah heralded. It features the Messiah -- or Elijah, the harbinger of the Messiah -- approaching Jerusalem astride a donkey. The commandment of hiddur mitzvah, which urges one to adorn and beautify the implements of holiness, is the fundamental justification within Judaism for the embellishment, through the ages, of the books, manuscripts, documents, and ritual artifacts of Jewish life. The Library's most important Hebrew illuminated manuscript is known as the "Washington Haggadah" because of its location in Washing

Passover 2008: Food Phenomenon (Part I)
Passover is the Festival for freedom for Jews worldwide. If so, then why is it that we feel so restricted when it comes to this wonderful holiday? Maybe I'm wrong but part of the holiday atmosphere is clouded by worries of, we can't eat this and we can't eat that. But who says that that is the case? If you're one of the many that eat gebrokts, mish (mix foods), eat kitnios or even none you have NOTHING to be concerned about. There are so many foods that one can prepare for the Pesach holiday that it just boggles the mind. Here is a recipe for Charoset, the traditional food that we eat on Pesach. Its texture reminds us of the mortar used by the slaves in Egypt to build. 1 cup of walnuts 1 granny smith green apple 2 tsp. cinnamon 2 tsp. sugar red wine to moisten Chop the nuts and apple

It's incredible how the Kosher for Passover food market has expanded. I mean take you local grocery for example (well, I guess in the Tri-State Area, as I don't know much about what goes on elsewhere). After Purim, you can immediately see a change in the stores; a section of the store is emptied and shelves cleaned and covered in white paper. Suddenly there is a nice sized Passover department, its shelves fully stocked with Passover goodies ranging from macaroons, Passover cookies and Passover candies to pickles, canned goods and of course, Matza!! What is matzah you ask? The biblical narrative relates that the Israelites left Egypt in such haste, they could not wait for their bread dough to rise so in commemoration of the exodus from Egypt, we traditionally eat matzah. RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL : TALMUDIC DISCOURSE: PASSOVER, EXODUS, MOSES' SPIRITUAL AWAKENING    Shalom Talmudim:   It has been posited that the whole of Genesis is to lead our people to commit the sin against their brother Joseph, to eventually get the clan of Israel, into Egypt, and into slavery. This slavery would eventually have them yearn for liberation and acceptance of Torah.   Hence Moses, a Levite son of the Israelite clan, with an Egyptian name, grew up in the house of Pharaoh, as a prince of Egypt. The Torah has to have him have an national  awakening and identify with his people. Hence the verses of Exodus 2:11-15, has Moses refer to his fellow Israelites as ''brethren'' twice, and for the first time Moses actually sees their burdens and suffering.

The Perfect Easter Egg and a Passover Treat
Spring has finally arrived.I, for one, am overjoyed. Warm weather, spending time out of doors without a snow shovel or layers of excess clothing, backyard gatherings, and barbeques .. all of the things that make life great. About the only thing I do not look forward to is the inevitable yard work but the way I figure it that is where the industrious young enterprenuers in my neighborhood come in. I am all for helping a young business person especially if it gets me out of cutting the grass. And .. on top of everything else .. Easter is just around the corner. Sunday, April 8. The day that the Easter Bunny makes his rounds and brings all of those wonderful, sweet treats to all of the good little boys and girls regardless of their age.Easter is probably my favorite Spring day. Passover confusion
On Sunday, my mother and I were talking about something, and she told me that she bought some frozen vegetable mix to eat during Passover. It included corn. She was not happy when I told her that, as a grain, corn is not Pesach-friendly. Of course, that was the same thing that happened many years ago, when I told her that peanut butter was not kosher for Passover either. This year, though, instead of my traditional confusion as to what I can and cannot eat during the holiday, I just decided to give up processed carbs altogether. Tonight I'm eating chicken on a salad with olive oil and red wine vinegar.Admittedly, my decision is mostly because matzo is gross, and because a strict interpretation of the rules has led me to conclude that everything good is prohibited anyway. But in addition, it's a giant experiment in the Atkins diet. Maybe it'll work and I'll lose 10 pounds, maybe it won't. But at least I won't inadvertently eat something leavened. And no matter what, it's bette
