The people at Sadly NO! (thanks Noel) were upset that a comparison of prevalent attitudes between the United States and another nation would lead somebody to conclude that Americans were "better" in some way. I understand their concern and wish to explore the issue with them:

Consumer groups have launched a scathing attack on British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh and his management team over the Heathrow Terminal 5 "debacle". It has been reported today that passengers have been forced to fly naked and abandon clothes in order to be able to board some flights. A fire broke out in an engine on an easyjet flight from Athens to Luton. Some passengers in the rear of the plane saw the engine catch fire. Adele Berry, from Leeds, said, "There was a big clanging noise, and obviously we were all terrified. There wasn't a lot of information being given. Then people towards the rear of the cabin - we were at the front - said that there was a fire, and were shouting fire, fire."Whilst it must have been a scary moment, shouting "fire!, fire!" on a plane is not the best message to send out. If there had been a lack of information, then that's down to easyjet. These modern planes are able to fly home on one engine. Sounds to me like the pilot had it all under control, but that the cabin staff were not so sure of what to say. With cheap air travel available, the

The controversial Mobile OnAir system will allow passengers aboard one of the airline's Airbus A318 planes to send and receive SMS and MMS messages as well as using Internet services.During the second phase of the trial, passengers will also be allowed to make and receive phone calls - though the French national carrier has emphasised its commitment to ensuring a balance is struck between convenience and customer well-being.
Alaskan Airlines and Horizon Air have found themselves in the middle of a raging controversy regarding their 10 percent discounts to gay passengers. The offer isn’t exactly worded in those terms; rather, users are only allowed to access the discount through the company’s Gay Travels page on its website.
Obviously this has gotten holiday travelers in a flutter, especially right wingers who see this as another symptom of “everything that’s wrong with society”. The Idaho Values Alliance is fuming that the airline that prides itself on its no discrimination policies is so blatantly discriminating against straight people.
You could argue that this is a sign of discrimination in reverse, the proverbial shoe on the other foot. (“You mean I can’t get a discount because I am straight? Preposterous!”) Except for the sneaky manner in which the airline has positioned the discount offer. It’s not featured in the promos/deals section where it should be, and until news o
The powers that be at Delta Airlines, have come up with a carbon offsets program that passengers and fliers can take easy advantage of.
Basically when a customer books a flight at the airlines website Delta.com, one is offered the option of buying carbon offsets right at booking time. The price per roundtrip ticket is a modest $5.50 and this money goes to the environmental organization called Go Zero.
Delta is the first U.S. airline to offer carbon offsets to fliers.

As Air New Zealand planes took off above them, Pacific Blue strategists enjoying a meal near Christchurch Airport launched Project Salmon - an operation to bushwhack existing airlines and give domestic travel the biggest shakeup in six years.Their secret plan got its name partly in reference to the fish that looks something like a big red herring, but mainly in honour of the long, wine-aided lunch at a salmon fishing lodge in early May.
Source: MSNBC.com - Judge: Air passengers can sue over blood clots
Apparently a judge has ruled that passengers can sue airlines over blood clots. The article writes that patients who developed a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) can sue the airline if they were not allowed to move to an empty seat with more leg room.
I realize that a DVT can be fatal. So its not something that should be taken lightly. But this whole thing seems like a bad idea to me. If this case goes in favor of the passengers, will the airlines resort to taking out a few rows and raising airfare to avoid a future lawsuit?
And what about people who love taking advantage of “the system.” I can imagine someone tired of sitting in economy asking the flight attendant if there are any empty seats in the first class cabin because they are at risk for a DVT. And what about if there are 2 at-risk passengers requesting a change of seat and only one seat available? Well, flight attendants are far from qualified to decide

TSB Looking Into Turbulent WestJet Flight that Left Passengers Injured
HALIFAX (CP) — Transport Canada and the Transportation Safety Board are both looking into a WestJet flight from Calgary to Halifax that hit rough turbulence, injuring several passengers and sending three to hospital.
The Boeing 737 was north of Sudbury, Ont., on Thursday night when the plane dropped several hundred metres
Ever heard of hippy profiling? Surprisingly many countries make legal stipulations to airlines regarding the profiling of their passengers. For example, the Costa Rican government dictates to the airline that they will refuse “hippies” entrance into the country. If the airlines allow someone onto their flight who is denied entrance into the country for being a “hippy”, the airline will be fined and charged for your return flight. This shifts the screening process to the clerk at the airline check-in counter.
While this is official policy, it must all be taken with a grain of salt because if you’ve ever been to Costa Rica you know that its full of “hippies” and I’ve never heard of anyone getting denied entrance for being a “hippy”.
Even still, it is disconcerting that official profiling exists in such an institutional manner. While everyone may have various opinions on the matter, I have always found that “cleanin

Greek Aegean Airlines said that passenger traffic in the first half of the year rose 19 pct year on year to 2.3 mln passengers, up from 1.9 mln passengers over the same period in 2006. The airline attributed the increase to healthy travel demand, the company's strengthening brand awareness, and its international network expansion. Flights in the first half of the year also rose 16 pct year on year to 25,628 flights, resulting in an average of 91 passengers per flight in the first half of 2007 against 89 in the same period of 2006.

This is one that people who try to cheat the system will not be happy about, as UK scientists have invented Dtect (a new infrared camera).
What Dtect does is count the number of passengers inside cars to check if there is too many people in the car, the system is targeted at cars driving in high-occupancy vehicle lanes (HOV).
Tickets then can go out automatically which is what governments love to do as it saves them cash and gets them more cash, the infrared camera can even distinguish dummies and dogs from people.

Evidently some party-pooper flight attendant on a recent FlyGlobespan flight bound for Ibiza (the shock!) took issue with a teenage passenger’s practicing his best Kate Moss impression just before take-off. Via Jaunted:
More trouble for the fledgling Scottish airline FlyGlobespan — A teenager was reportedly arrested at Edinburgh airport today after snorting cocaine off the tray table of a FlyGlobespan plane while awaiting takeoff.

==========Only In America! This is the best lawyer story of the year, decade and probably the century.A Charlotte, NC, lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against fire among other things. Within a month having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the lawyer filed claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires."The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason: that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued....and won!In delivering the ruling the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The Judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacce

New Delhi, May 22 (IANS) Domestic low cost carrier SpiceJet entered its third year of operations Tuesday aiming to double its passengers to six million in the next year with the addition of five extended range (ER) jets to its fleet of 11 aircraft.
To mark the anniversary, the airline also announced a series of promotional measures, including offering 200,000 seats at 99 paise, a domestic travel insurance policy at a premium of Rs.129, and the sale of food on board flights of more than 90 minutes duration.
The airline says that in the April-June quarter, it will be the first low cost carrier to come out of the red and even show profits.
In the longer run, the airline is also eyeing destinations in the Middle East and Southeast Asia once Indian norms on such operations are relaxed.
“It’s been an uphill task but we are built on a solid foundation. We carried 1.5 million passengers in our first year, doubled that in the second and are now aiming at carrying six million passen
Most airline passengers in Indonesia now can access websites or telephone carriers to have their tickets issued electronically, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) was quoted by the Jakarta Post as saying here Saturday. The association said in a statement on Friday that 82 percent of the Indonesia's airline passengers could get the electronic ticketing, the second highest among the association members in Asia-Pacific, higher than the global and regional averages of 79 percent and 67 percent respectively. According to IATA, e-ticketing will result in savings of 3 billion U.S. dollars annually for the airline industry as processing a paper ticket costs 10 U.S. dollars, while an e-ticket costs only 1 U.S. dollar.
An Indian train driver came up with an original idea when the train he was driving broke down unexpectedly.Rather than face the prospect of scores of frustrated passengers launching a chorus of complaints, the driver instead asked them to get out and push. Many chose to get out of their seats and do just that, officials say.It took them more than half an hour to move the electric train 12ft (4m) so that it touched live overhead wires and was able to resume its journey.Momentum"In so many years of service in the railways, I have never come across such a bizarre incident," Deepak Kumar Jha, a spokesman for Indian Railways, told the Reuters news agency.Officials say the extraordinary display of passenger power occurred on Tuesday in the eastern state of Bihar after a passenger pulled the train's emergency chain, bringing it to a halt in a "neutral zone".This is a short length of track where there is no power in the overhead wires.Correspondents say that a train's momentum usually allows
I thought I should share this story with my readers:Hundreds of rail passengers got more than they had bargained for when the driver of their train asked them to get out and push. It took more than half an hour to move the stalled electric train 12 feet so that it touched live overhead wires and was able to resume its journey, officials said on Wednesday. The incident occurred in Bihar on Tuesday after a passenger pulled the trainu2019s emergency chain and it halted in a "neutral zone", a short length of track where there is no power in the overhead wires. A train’s momentum usually allows it to continue moving through neutral zones, but in this case it needed a little extra from the passengers. If it happened in America, the Railways would probably go bankrupt due to the lawsuits they would face from these free labourers.
Since 2002, there have been 4,800 cases of travelers refused taxi cab service at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Their crime? Coming back from a vacation or business trip with a bottle of alcohol. Now the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) is stepping in to raise the punishment for drivers who refuse to serve customers.Under the new rules that take effect on May 11th, the MAC will suspend a cab driver's airport taxi license for 30 days the first time the driver refuses service and revokes the license for two years after the second violation. The problem is that more than 70 percent of the cabbies serving the airport are Somalis and practicing Muslims. They say that Islamic law prohibits them from picking up people who are carrying alcohol. The penalty under the old rules was for the taxi driver to have to go to the end of the taxi cab line up. The MAC says the tougher penalties are meant to insure that customers receive service and are not stranded at the airport.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Six Muslim men removed from a plane last fall after being accused of suspicious behavior are suing not only the airline but the passengers who complained—a move some fear could discourage travelers from speaking up when they see something unusual.
The civil rights lawsuit, filed earlier this month, has so alarmed some lawyers that they are offering to defend the unnamed “John Doe” passengers free of charge. They say it is vital that the flying public be able to report suspicious behavior without fear of being dragged into court.
When you drive up the road towards the airport, there’s a big road sign that says, `Report suspicious behavior,’” said Gerry Nolting, a Minneapolis lawyer. “There’s no disclaimer that adds, `But beware if you do that, you might get sued.’”
The six imams were taken off a Phoenix-bound US Airways flight on Nov. 20 while returning home from a conference of Islamic clerics in Minneapolis.

A 20-year-old woman and 22-year-old man, whom the cruise line is not naming, have been rescued after falling off a cabin balcony on a cruise ship which sparked a four hour rescue mission.
Princess Cruises is now in the process of investigating how the two managed to fall off of the cruise ship. They both fell about 60 feet and it appears that it was an accident.
Once friends notified the crew, which was around 1:30 a.m., of the incident the captain turned the ship around and they used high beam spotlights and rescue boats to search for them. One passenger was rescued around 5:30 a.m. and the other was pulled out about 30 minutes later.
Surprisingly the two passengers sustained only some minor injuries. Micah Franklin, coast guard swimmer, said that “just falling 50 feet can do you do you some serious damage and basically knock the wind out of you,” and that “if you survive that part, then you’ve got, depending on your swimming agility, how long are you g
Remember the flying imams in Minneapolis? Since their attempt to reach an out-of-court settlement with US Airways didn't yield them the results they wanted, they've turned again to suing them for "humiliating" them, and not only that, they even want to sue the passengers who boldly turned to the airplane staff to complain. As the Washington Times reports:"If such a suit could proceed, it would have a chilling effect on the willingness of people to provide information that authorities need to act when people are engaged in wrongdoing," said Mark Behrens, a liability defense lawyer with the Washington firm of Shook, Hardy & Bacon."If reporting suspicious behavior becomes actionable, that could have a dangerous precedent for reporting other crimes, like child abuse and abductions," Mr. Behrens said. "It's certainly a form of intimidation to go after passengers."The lawsuit primarily targets US Airways and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Airports Commission, but suing passengers w
