Novel therapies for age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's
In their current study, published in the online edition of the journal Nature, Conboy and her team found that old muscle produces elevated levels of a molecule called TGF-beta, which is known to inhibit muscle growth. The researchers then showed that the muscle-deteriorating effects of TGF-beta can be reversed by blocking its pathway in old mice. In the experiments, the researchers used RNA inter

      Cloning Treats Mouse Parkinson's Disease
Therapeutic cloning has been successfully used to treat Parkinson's disease in mice. The study in Nature Medicine provides the best evidence so far that the controversial technique could one day help people with the condition. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre team says it is the first time animals have been successfully treated with their own cloned cells. In Parkinson's disease, nerve cells in the part of the brain that controls muscle movement either die or become impaired. Normally, these cells produce a vital chemical known as dopamine, which allows smooth, co-ordinated function of the body's muscles and movement. In this study, stem cells were developed into dopamine-producing neurons the missing nerve cells in Parkinson's disease. The mice that received neurons der

Green Tea May Protect Brain Cells Against Parkinson’s Disease
The authors investigated the effects of green tea polyphenols, a group of naturally occurring chemical substances found in plants that have antioxidant properties, in an animal model of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, resulting from the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells, and there is presently no cure. According to Dr. Baolu Zhao, corresponding and senior author on this article, current treatments for Parkinson’s are associated with serious and important side effects. Their previous research has indicated that green tea possesses neuroprotective effects, leading Guo and colleagues to examine its effects specifically in Parkinson’s. The authors discovered that green tea polyphenols protect dopamine neurons that increases with the amount consumed. They also show that this protective effect is mediated by inhibition of the ROS-NO pathway, a pathway that may contribute to cell death

Omega-3 Fats Protect You From Parkinson's
Omega-3 fatty acids protect your brain against Parkinson’s disease, according to a new study. Parkinson’s disease is caused by the progressive death of dopamine-producing neurons. There is currently no medication to stop the progression of the disease, and it is usually only diagnosed when more than half of the neurons are already dead. But when mice were fed an omega-3 rich diet, they seemed immune to the effect of MPTP, a toxic compound that causes the same kind of brain damage as Parkinson’s. MPTP has been used for more than two decades in Parkinson’s research because it has the same effects but works faster than the disease itself. Analysis revealed that omega-3 fats, particularly DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), had replaced the omega-6 fats present in the brains of the mice that had been given omega-3 supplementation.

Eight years ago, neurologist Mark Stacy encountered a strange problem with two of his patients. Both men had Parkinson's disease, and they suddenly developed an out-of-control urge to gamble. Both maxed out their credit cards and lost $60,000 in just a few short months. Stacy realized that the gambling sprees started just after he had increased each man's dose of a drug to control Parkinson's, a movement disorder that afflicts up to 1 million people in the USA.USA Today August 26, 2007

      Diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease
Diagnosing Parkinson's Disease is, as with any other condition, a complex and uncertain process. With symptoms very similar to that of other neurological disorders, including a variety of different forms of the disease itself, the diagnosis requires an physician experienced in dealing with the condition first hand, and an ability to differentiate between the symptoms set synonymous with this and other conditions. Some related conditions take their course very rapidly, whereas some take time to develop. Similarly, some conditions are always present, whilst some are acute, therefore it is essential for the initiation of treatment that patients are diagnosed effectively and correctly. The patient may require observation for a period of time before proper diagnosis can be made, as there are no laboratory tests which can indicate its presence for certain. The doctor will firstly begin his patient evaluation by looking at his medical history and conducting a general health check t

      Surgery for Parkinson's Disease.
Several years ago, surgery for Parkinson's disease was the common practice for alleviating the symptoms in sufferers of the condition in the absence of any other particularly effective treatments or medications for those with severe symptoms. However, since the availability of the drug levodopa, surgery has been the reserve of a minority of serious, more advanced cases. Surgery is today used primarily for patients in the later stages of the condition who lack any apparent responsiveness to the medication and treatment they have undergone, and are faced with extreme symptoms which make their lives unbearable. Nowadays, it is usually only these drastic circumstances which will lead a physician to recommend surgery. Particularly effective in stopping tremors, the operation, known as a cryothalamotomy involves the insertion of a metal tip which has been cooled to extremely low temperatures, which serves to destroy the area of the brain responsible for causing the tremors in patients

      Who does Parkinson's Disease affect?
Parkinson's Disease affects thousands upon thousands of patients worldwide, although it is sometimes hard to ensure the count is accurate based on the number of cases which go unreported each year. It is a condition which is not synonymous with poverty, nor malnutrition, nor does it know of any geographic boundaries. The condition can affect anyone, with no known cause or reason, regardless of social status, education or race. Many patients in the early stages of the disease dismiss the symptoms as a natural part of the aging process and consequently do not seek help from their physician. It is highly recommended that if you, or someone you know is experiencing the trademark symptoms such as the tremor and loss of smooth, controlled movement, they consult a physician immediately for testing and information about the condition, its treatment, and how to live with the symptoms. This will help allay any fears or concerns which you may have, as well as begin to help the symptoms

But what needs to be answered is why treatment carried out at this teaching hospital is less than half of what is charged by private hospitals? When the study started, participants were 63 years old, on average. They reported their weekly hours of light exercise (walking or dancing) and moderate to vigorous exercise (jogging, running, swimming, bicycling, playing tennis or racquetball, or doing aerobics or calisthenics). A total of 413 participants were diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease by the end of the study.
