      A Parental Nightmare...
A father passing by his son's bedroom was astonished to see the bed nicely made up and everything neat and tidy. Then he saw an envelope propped up prominently on the pillow. It was addressed, "Dad". With the worst premonition, he opened the envelope and read the letter with trembling hands: Dear Dad, It is with great regret and sorrow th

Sudden parental death can be double whammy for children's mental health
Children who had a parent who died suddenly have three times the risk of depression than those with two living parents, along with an increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) according to a report in the May issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. About 4 percent of children in Western countries experience the death of a parent, according to background information in the article. Parents who have psychiatric disorders, including mood disorders and substance abuse, are more likely to die from suicide, accidents and heart disease. The same psychiatric factors that increase parents' risk of sudden death also predispose their children to developing similar mental health problems. Nadine M. Control parental

      OPW: Hemingway on Parental Infallibility
I briefly mentioned parental infallibility recently, and that lead me to seek out a story related to the topic from Hemingway, called “Indian Camp.” If you’re interested, you can read the whole thing (it’s pretty short) on the grand old internet. I should warn you, though, that if the story were a movie it would probably need a solid “R” rating for language and violence. But today’s “Other People’s Words,” are the last few lines of the story, which are neither profane nor violent. They’re about the complicated issues of parenting, place, and dying. “Is dying hard, Daddy?” “No, I think it’s pretty easy, Nick. It all depends.” They were seated in the boat, Nick in the stern, his father rowing. The sun was coming over the hills. A bass jumped, making a circle in the water. Nick trailed his hand in the water. It felt warm in the sharp chill of the morning. In the early m

Even through my late 20’s I remember sleeping in…until 10 or 11am or so. Nowadays, I’m up by 6:30am. Everyday. Even the weekends. Even when I’m staying in a hotel, hungover and someone else is taking the kids to school. I’m still not one of those way too perky for morning people, but I think I’ve accepted the fact that I wake up early. I no longer try to force myself back to sleep. In fact, I’ve been enjoying the past few mornings…a gift of a sleeping husband and children…a space of uninterrupted time…which I get to spend reading my favorite blogs. This morning, I came across an interesting link within the comments of one of my favorite dad blogs, Joeprah. Yes, I even had time to read the comments. A sleeping house is a lovely thing. Xbox 360’s New Parental Controls
Microsoft has confirmed they will be including a new feature on the Xbox 360 entitled “Family Timer”. Family timer is a new addition to the 360’s parental controls that allows parents to limit play time on a daily or weekly basis. When the time limit is reached the console shuts down. According to Microsoft 90% of parents have some sort of video game restriction for their children, so they feel this feature is a much needed addition. What if little Johnny is almost at the end of Fire and Flames on expert (Guitar Hero III) and all of a sudden the console shuts down? Maybe little Johnny should have listened when his parents told him the last time. I am not sure how many parents will even know this feature exists or for that matter how to even turn on their child’s xbox in the first place. My advice for little Johnny…find or guess the password! Xbox 360 Gaming According to Timetable - Is an XBox 360 Parental Timer in the Pipeline?
Reports have surfaced on the net that there may (we use the term ‘may’ advisably) be a parental timer on its way for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 gaming console allowing parents to enforce strictly regulated, timetabled ‘games time’ for their children – though, at the time of writing, we are unable to substantiate the rumour (regardless of what is being purported as being proof to back up the speculation). The Speculation stems from a Teamxbox member going by the psudomin of ‘xgdfaith’ who claims that, having purchased a copy of Guitar Hero III Keychain the package came with a pamphlet that described the features of a parental timer that is (allegedly) due to become available via Xbox Live in December 07. According to the apparent pamphlet the timer is ‘a simple tool that lets you manage how much time your kids spend on their Xbox 360.’ It goes on to say that you can ‘manage in daily or weekly increments’ and that the supposed tool will ‘become available in December

Parental Heart History Critical For Both Genders
www.chicagotribune.comBy Melissa HealyWhen a man suffers a heart attack at a young age, klaxons sound and red flags flutter for his son. Pointing to a son's inherited risk of going down the same road, physicians probably will urge him to stay away from cigarettes, watch his weight and exercise regularly. And there's growing evidence that that advice prompts many men to take heed - especially the recommendation to exercise. But do alarm bells sound for the female child of a premature heart attack victim - and does she hear them? A study in the September issue of the American Heart Journal suggests the answers are no and no. The study establishes that although the daughters of families with premature heart disease are at higher risk of developing heart disease themselves, they either are failing to get that message or not bothering to heed it.Between ages 30 and 50, these women are more likely to be overweight and to smoke than are their female peers without a family history of heart di

Liberalism, Replacing Parental Rights with Government Control

A dangerous theme. A despicable theme. Actually they are connected be two themes, parent’s rights, and liberalism.  Three of these stories are from my state of New Hampshire, the other from Maine. New England has blurred into one big blue mess so it’s safe to say that if a law is made in Maine, it will make it into law in New Hampshire, likewise with laws made in Vermont or Massachusetts. I think it is safe to use the story from Maine in this post under the above premise.   I hope to use this post to illustrate how deranged and absurd liberalism can be and has become. (more…)

By: David Johnson If you are a young parent, single parent, or part of a household where two parents have full time jobs, than you probably have worries about your children being subjected to gratuitous sex and or violence on television at your home. It is a growing concern of many parents who can not always be around their children when they watch television , that they will run in to an unscrupulous programmers channel while surfing from channel to channel. Even though a channel can be totally innocent and wholesome, it's neighbor on the dial may be all but insidious. It would truly be appropriate to say that you never know what could be lurking around the corner. In general, television airwaves are plagued with unnecessary content that caters to high school kids (who most the time are not supposed to be watching it but watch it anyway) and young adults. The problem is that young children can inadvertently get caught up in the mix of television programmers attempts at making m

"9 de cada 10 niños de entre 8 y 16 años han visto pornografía en Internet. En la mayoría de los casos accedieron en forma accidental mientras buscaban palabras o imágenes de contenido inocente." New Hampshire Dad Attacks Boy for Having Sex With His Daughter, and the repeal of the Parental Notification Law
This is a story that has the people of New Hampshire seemingly evenly split. This is a story about a boyfriend and girlfriend who skipped school to have sex. There was a little problem here though, besides skipping school, you see the boy is seventeen and the girl is fifteen. She is six months away from the age of consent. The boy is going to be charged with sexual assault and tried as an adult. These charges are a Class A misdemeanor offense and is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine. He may also have to file as a sex offender, all though that seems unlikely, however he will be required by law to report the arrest on college and job applications.   That takes us to the second chapter of the story. When the girl didn’t show up for school a call was placed to her father. When her father found out why she skipped school he decided to take justice into his own hands. In other words, he beat the crap out of the boy after school on school property. He is als

      Distraught Lesbian Parental Woes
This rant today is brought to you by this incredible news story. (Same story, different reports here, here, and here). A lesbian couple goes to the doctor, borrows some sperm, gets them fertilized in-vitro, and then has the embryos implanted to try to give them a child. The procedure works. In fact, it works so well, the couple now has two healthy, baby girls. And they don’t want one of them, so they’re suing the doctor over it. An Australian lesbian couple who underwent embryo implantation is currently suing Canberrian Dr. Sydney Robert Armellin for destroying the couple’s social life with children.  You hateful, terrible person — how dare you give this couple children when they went in for treatment? Here’s some reasons why this couple of women should be taken out into the streets and hit over the head with a garden rake repeatedly for being selfish, ignorant, whiny, immature, disgusting human beings: Reason #1: They don’t want one of the

How Do I Protect My Child Online With Parental Monitoring Software?

It is essential for parents to know what there child is doing online. More On Men's (Lack of) Parental Rights
Misandry cloaks the family law system in America. There is a story on Glenn Sack's blog about the foster care system ignoring the rights of a father needlessly separated from his daughter for over a decade. The story goes that Thomas Smith, a decorated Vietnam war veteran had a daughter named Melinda. Until the girl was age four, he saw her regularly. Melinda's mother packed up and moved away with her without leaving a forwarding address. The mother was arrested for abuse and Melinda was placed in the foster care system. Thomas was never contacted regarding this situation even though he was on file as the girl's father, and his abilities as a parent were never put into question. Thomas received an order to pay child support and went to the court hearing hoping to find information, but was left in the dark. At age 7, Melinda was placed in a group facility with children convicted of criminal activity because of her angry outbursts, which were probably influenced by the bad situation l

      Whatever Happened to Parental Responsibility?
The week’s Advertising Age reports that even after Big Food, 11 major food marketers including Kellogg, Kraft Foods, General Mills and Unilever, voluntarily shifted or eliminated $1 billion in kid-targeted junk-food marketing, critics, watchdogs and regulators such as Federal Trade Commission’s Jon Leibowitz are now pressing for more restrictions on more marketers including media companies. They are going after Viacom, Time Warner, the TV Networks as well as ConAgra, Chuck E. Cheese and Burger King. The FTC is preparing subpoenas for 44 food and fast-food companies to examine how they are marketing products to kids. What does this mean? Coca-Cola and Hersheys won’t aim advertisements at kids younger than 12. Mars/Masterfoods won’t advertise any of its candies to kids. PepsiCo, Kraft Foods, Kellogg, General Mills, McDonald’s, Unilever and Campbell Soup will limit all their marketing of food to children younger than 12 to more healthy foods. No more Cap’n Crunch. No more

      Parental responsibilities and schools
I was tipped off by Lee that I might be interested in one ofhis more controversial blog posts. How To Turn Your Daughter Into A Whore In Two Easy Steps Now if the name of the post hasn’t shocked you enough you might be interested to know that Lee is a public school teacher himself. That’s right, this damning thought came from someone who works inside the schools themselves. Personally I find that interesting, as most often it has been assumed that those who feel similarly are anti-school. But this is clearly not the case here. Now ignoring the parts about piercings, says the homeschooling mom with tattoos and piercings ;), he makes a great point at the bottom of the post. Emphasis mine. This is all part of a larger problem our society has. Parents have shifted their parental responsibilities to the school systems. We’re not only charged with teaching kids how to read and write, but how to act, too. Well, even though I currently work for a school system, I’m not much of

      Improve Your Parental Communication Skills
ONE of the best ways to improve your communication skills with your child is to use open-ended responses that do not convey judgment. These "Door Openers" will help you get to the bottom of a problem instead of showing your child that you are interested more in winning than discussing with them. Door Openers "What do you think?" "Would you like to share more about that?" "That's a good question." "I don't know, but I'll find out" "I'm interested in what you are saying." "Do you know what that means?" "That sounds important to you." "Do you want to talk about it?" Door Slammers are the opposite and are used by the majority of parents. These statements imply a lack of understanding and result in more arguments instead of resolving the original one. Door Slammers "You are too young to understand." "If you say that again, I'll..." "That's none of your business." "I don't care what your friends are doing!" "We'll talk about that when you need to know." "That's just for boys/girls

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch signes Parental Notification Repeal Bill, Shows a Real Lack of Leadership
Friday Governor Lynch made it official and signed the parental notification repeal bill. This bill repeals the law which said a MINOR has to have a parent’s permission to have an abortion. What a radical idea. Governor Lynch doesn’t believe that parents have the right to know if their daughters are acting in a dangerous way, and putting themselves at risks for diseases that are worse than pregnancy. Your daughter can’t go on a field trip with school without a permission slip, yet an abortion is okay? Anyway, I kind of got side tracked, I wanted to talk about a different issue with this bill. Internet Filtering or Web Parental Control! Would you use them to protect your kids?
The internet is wonderful technology. It has indeed broken down many borders and anyone with access to the internet could practically get their hands on any types of information and knowledge anywhere in the world today. Unfortunately, not everything found on the internet is good and beneficial. Many are controversial and pose serious threats to any decent societies. Concerned parents have always been sceptical of the internet. While they did not dismiss the fact that the internet can provide information and knowledge at the tip of their fingers, they do worry about how the internet could affect their kids who are too young and naïve to differentiate what is right or wrong. Hence, most Malaysian parents took the easiest way out and opt for not having internet access at home. I personally view this as a bad decision made by Malaysian parents. By dismissing the internet from being used at home, Malaysian parents are actually closing

      Parental Discretion is Advised
International mutual funds should be a part of every investor’s portfolio. I’ve beaten this drum before (see A Euro, A Yen, a Buck or a Pound and The CIA Guide to International Investing).  But when the cover of BusinessWeek asks: What’s the Most Extreme Emerging Market on Earth?  (remember the Sports Illustrated curse) I begin to get a little nervous. Let’s stick with China for a minute. The Hang Seng (Hong Kong stock market) is up 30% in the past year. This is against a current back drop of Chinese government concerns about their stock markets becoming too speculative, widening the trading range of the Yuan, and possible U.S. trade limitations.     International markets will go down at some point in time and I take the above as warning signs that a correction might occur sooner rather then later. Does this mean you should sell your international mutual funds or not buy, if you don’t yet own any?&nb

O/S on a large tv & Vista parental controls
Just been watching a 42″ TV which makes a disconcerting digital ping sound when starting or stopping the TV, so I assume it’s running an operating system (groan). After an hour watching the same channel and without changing any settings guess what happened? A screen-saver kicked in and blanked the screen. He-he. Who tested that? I have my two daughters using the laptop so have switched on some parental controls, applied to their user names, to restrict access to inappropriate web sites. Also have set times that they can use the laptop. This should be interesting as this type of testing is a bit tedious if I apply these rules to my own username (So you go to a lot of inappropriate web sites then? Ed). Their usage times are from 8am to 10pm. So what will happen at 10pm when they are using the laptop and chatting to their friends on MS Messenger and their usage period runs out? I assume they will just be automatically logged out. I’m definitely going to hear about that

Parental rights and the intersests of the state
Parental rights is a big issue recently, highlighted by conflicts between parental wishes and the interests of the state. In 1996, Federal District Judge Melinda Harmon stated in a ruling that "Parents give up their rights when they drop the children off at public school." In Fields v. Palmdale School District, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's decision in a case involving

      Parental Licensure
Raising a child is one of the greatest responsibilities humans undertake. A child might grow up to cure diseases, prevent wars, or a host of other great accomplishments. A child might instead grow up to be a psychopath, leaving a trail of pain and misery in his or her path. Of course, it would be naive to claim that what you do as a parent could determine this. However, it seems quite reasonable to me to think that society has a vested interest in making sure that you are at least minimally competent as a parent. This is why I would like to see parental licensure.Operating a motor vehicle is a tremendous responsibility. To ensure the safety of the individual driver and everyone else on the road, a system of licensing is required. We want to make sure the driver has at least minimal knowledge of the rules of the road and can demonstrate minimal competence in the operation of the vehicle. We may complain about the inefficiency of this system, but there are few who would argue that we sho

More on the Parental Licensure and Related Topics
My recent posts on parental licensure and child abuse generated quite a bit of interest, so I thought I'd draw your attention to a couple of related posts on other blogs.First up, Spreading Mayonnaise has a good post disagreeing with me and making a case against parental licensure. I offered a brief response in the comments on the Spreading Mayonnaise blog, but I also want to acknowledge that there are serious problems with attempts to implement any sort of enforceable parental licensure system. My thoughts on this matter are far from being fully formed, however, I do believe that some sort of parental licensure system is an option that at least merits consideration.I cannot help making one additional observation on this subject. I find it interesting that the focus on creating any sort of parental licensure system (protecting children) is almost immediately transformed into one of interfering with parental rights and punishing parents. It is almost as if people are more concerned wit

Persecution Watch: Parental Rights Under Assault in Massachusetts
      This is extremely disturbing. Vatican II teaches us that, in raising children, the responsibility of parents is primary: "Since parents have given life to their children, they have a very grave duty to educate them, and so are to be recognized as their primary and principal educators" (GE, No. 3). And Pope John Paul II, explaining the conciliar teaching more fully in Familiaris consortio No. 36, says that: "The right and duty of parents to give education is essential, since it is connected with the transmission of human life; it is original and primary with regard to the educational role of others, on account of the uniqueness of the loving relationship between parents and children; and it is irreplaceable and inalienable, and therefore incapable of being entirely delegated to others or usurped by others." Canon Law is also very clear on this matter. Canon 793, 1., states that: "Parents as well as those who take their place are obliged and enjoy the right to educate their offspring;
