A paramedic in Glasgow, Scotland, UK was forced to look on as a teenage victim of a knife attack lay screaming for help in the street, after being stabbed in the neck, due to being alone and deemed "at risk."Paramedic Mairi Lennon was instructed to wait for police to arrive at the scene before attending to the 19-year-old Stuart Baillie, who took 13 minutes to get there. The incident ultimately resulted in the man's death.A key union figure pinned the blame at using single paramedics in the quick response cars to boost response-rate times. The Scottish Ambulance Service, however, proclaimed there was a genuine risk to their staff at the scene. Source: www.telegraph.co.uk

What Is A Paramedic?Paramedics are certified emergency medical professionals who act in response to specific trauma related crises. They stabilize a patient's condition while being transported to a healthcare facility, generally by ambulance. If the patient's condition worsens during transit, paramedics can switch to advanced levels of treatment available in the ambulance. Usually, they transfer sick patients to the emergency unit. However, some states have the "Treat-and-Release" practice, whereby patients can be discharged if they recover. These protocols cannot be overlooked, but at times, paramedics have to make decisions that work in the best interest of their patients. They can also provide Advanced and Basic Life Support and Pediatric Life Support care.Paramedic SchoolsParamedic Schools or EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) Schools teach students the various skills and abilities that are required to become an emergency professional.Whenever an accident or a sudden life-threate

Contrabass Conversations regular collaborator John Grillo recently sent me a link to this story about Nancy Donaruma, a 59 year old New York Philharmonic cellist who is quitting the orchestra to become a full-time paramedic:After 31 years in the top-tier orchestra, playing with conductors including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta and Lorin Maazel, the 59-year-old cellist will go from a hefty six-figure annual income to a "low five-figure" salary. That's the price she's willing to pay to fulfill her lifetime fascination with medicine. "I've always had an interest in how the human body works — and doesn't," she said. "And I do like taking care of people." Donaruma says her physical skill as a cellist — manual dexterity and quick, supple fingers — "is good for starting IVs and feeling pulses." Other overlapping qualities are the ability "to be very focused and do something in an immediate fashion — and not to make any mistakes."Read the complete story here.
NHS Blog Doctor: Paramedic, radiographer, housekeeper, midwife, gardener, psychiatristJohn Crippen has exceeded himself today. No doubt he has been at the Kipling cakes given the gross irritation he is feeling at the ongoings of the NHS today. Crippen though spots a new NHS Career website for teenie boppers.Amazing it uses the word "psychiatrist" :). It isn't pc to use that word since Ms Mellor and the GMC are doing their damnest to put forward the most amusing arguments.Nevertheless, in the cheery spirit of recruiting our teenagers into the NHS, here is my advice1. Be square2. Never write on the internet3. Always remember that you may never see your family4. 70 percent of NHS staff have psychopathic tendencies5. That goes to 1 percent of patients/relatives and campaigners.6. Always eat three shredded wheat7. Train yourselves to stop caring too much8. No using myspace and placing your profiles up there. The GMC will visit you.9. Remember that about £1500 per year goes towards the GMC
Video footage of Anna Nicole being worked on by paramedic’s has been shown on German TV and on the internet on Friday, only a day after her sudden death.
The grainy video shows Anna being wheeled on a stretcher. Paramedic’s can been seen pumping her torso as she is lifted into a waiting ambulance, and one is seen operating an oxygen pump.
The footage was shot and sold by the Splash news and Picture Agency who are based in Los Angeles. Splash have declined to identify the buyer, but received $500,000 for the rights.
