The MacUpdate promo has unlocked both Parallels and BannerZest (as well as Sound Studio), reversing my prior concerns, and making the bundle one heck of a good deal. Parallels alone (which I have used the heck out of), is worth the $64.99 price of entry, getting BannerZest tossed in is just icing. As [...]

As calendars flip forward for the start of 2008, SWsoft, maker of Parallels software that allows Windows to run on Intel-based Macs, will take on a new moniker, the company announced Wednesday. In January, SWsoft will be known simply as "Parallels." Along with its new name, the company will unveil a new logo and refresh its line of products. Its decision to adopt the Parallels name, the name of the Herndon, Va.-based virtualization company SWsoft purchased back in 2004, is a move undertaken as the company fights for a share of the virtualization pie.

As the reverse mortgage industry expands and constantly introduces new (and confusing) products, some people are beginning to wonder whether reverse mortgages are destined to become the next subprime mess.

Every so often someone will use the feedback form, or find me on IM, and ask a random question. I try to answer as many of them as possible, and occasionally the questions lead to tutorials here on Simple Help. Yesterday I wrote out a fairly long answer to a reader submitted question, and it dawned on me that I should consider posting these on SH, even if not in tutorial format. So - here’s the first one -

Hi,
My name is Jane and my aunty gave me your details. She said you were a great help! I was wondering if you knew the difference between Paraelles and Bootcamp and which one is better? I have a mac osx 10.4.8 and need to run windows so I can run CAD programs. Am I able to do this from this version?
Hope to hear from you soon.
Kind Regards
Jane
Here was my answer to Jane -
Parallels runs while OS X is running. It opens like any other window (like Safari or iTunes) but inside that window, you can have a fully running “Windows”. So
Huh. So. Parallels. Yeah… So if one were running XP on OSX via Parallels and one were testing some rollovers one might encounter this problem. The problem is that under Coherence mode IE doesn’t seem to actually register mouseover events unless a mouse button is held down - which is both annoying and wrong.
That is, suppose you had a table and each tr had a mouseover event handler. The handler would not be fired unless you were holding a mouse button down or scrolling the window with the scroll wheel - the latter of which leads to vaguely unpredictable results. This isn’t a general Parallels problem because if you view it in single window mode it works just fine. Presumably this because there’s some kind of black magic going on to make the mouse both a windows and an osx mouse in Coherence.
That’s awesome. I’m not just saying that because I hypothetically lost a couple hours tracking down the problem and only noticed that it wasn’t broken when
This tutorial will guide you through installing Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) using Parallels Desktop 3.0 (Build 5540 - which is a beta at this time) for OS X. There are a number of ways you can try to install Ubuntu 7.10 in Parallels Desktop, as found in this thread on the Parallels Support Forums - but I spent a couple of hours trying each one, and had no luck. Other folks did have luck with some of those methods, so you may want to give them a shot, because the method I outline is a bit time consuming. With all of that said, the good folks who develop Parallels have mentioned that they are currently working on better support, so this tutorial itself is probably “time limited” - as in it won’t be necessary in a few weeks/months.
If you already have Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) installed in Parallels, and you’re using build 5540 of Parallels Desktop, you can skip down to step 15 below.
If you don’t have Ubuntu installed, what we’re going to do is inst
I cannot recollect to have seen this congressional testimony by Robert Kuttner (pdf) from October 2 being reported in the MSM.It again confirms my view that shorting the financial sector and the Federal Reserve (not US!) Dollar as well as all US federal debt and using the profits to buy more precious metals is probably the most prudent investment strategy these days. I am most grateful for your other suggestions in comments.Read Kuttner's testimony in full (all emphasis mine):Testimony of Robert Kuttner Before the Committee on Financial ServicesU.S. House of Representatives Washington, D.C.October 2, 2007Mr. Chairman and members of the Committee: Thank you for this opportunity. Run Windows on your Mac!Parallels Desktop for Mac is the first solution for Intel-Macs that gives you the flexibility of running Windows on a Mac simultaneously without rebooting. It is fast and flexible by enabling you to run critical Windows-only applications like Internet Explorer, Outlook, Project, Access and Quicken at full speed. Because Windows is completely isolated from your OS X, there is no chance of infecting your Mac with Windows viruses. What is more, running Windows through Parallels is more secure now than running it on a real PC. The one-click installation is simple, intuitive, and automatically installs and configures your Windows hardware drivers. With Parallels Desktop for Mac you can now run all the applications you need without switching between Windows and Mac OS X! The new feature - Coherence shows Windows applications as if they were running natively on your Mac. Use Coherence to truly enjoy the best of both worlds at the same time! Transporter is a powerful ne

"Look at that," I commented to the tall, pretty mom standing next to me. "Eight children sitting quietly like they’re supposed to, two crying at the door, and one boy off in a corner doing his own thing. That would be my son." As I spoke, Bub swung back and forth on the uneven parallel bars, a huge grin on his face. A moment later he was joined by a second boy whose momentary circle-time

We don't often profess our love for commercial software around these parts, but Parallels Desktop for Mac - the application that runs Windows XP and Vista on your Mactel in a virtual machine - has just released version 3.0, and despite the price tag, we're drooling over the new feature set. The NY Times David Pogue breaks down the good stuff: You can drag and drop files from the Windows desktop to the Mac desktop, or vice versa. You can also right-click a document in either universe (a Word file, JPEG, PDF or whatever); the Open With pop-up menu, which lists programs that can open it, now lists both Mac and Windows programs. So if you're working on the Mac, you can right-click a Word document and have it open in Word for Windows.A Mac program called Parallels Explorer lets you manipulate the contents of your virtual Windows "hard drive" even when Parallels isn't running. If you sometimes use Apple's Boot Camp program, Parallels can use the same copy of Windows, so you don't have
I have been looking for a laptop as of late and the decision between Windows and Mac just keeps getting harder and harder. I keeping going back and forth as I see pluses and minuses for each, but as I watched this video today it kinda sealed the deal. Mac! Watch for yourself and tell me you wouldn’t choose the same.
Although this video and Virtue Desktop has become dated as Leopard will carry these features, it still shows the versatility and endless possibilities an Apple machine offers.
The latest Parallels Desktop (RC3) adds several intriguing features. One is that you can migrate the data and operating system from a Windows PC to your Intel-based Mac running Parallels. (Similar to Apple’s Migration Assistant.) Another is that you can easily convert virtual hard disks created by VMware and Virtual PC to virtual machines in Parallels. A third is that you can seamlessly upgrade Windows XP running on Parallels to Windows Vista. Parallels Desktop allows Mac users to run Windows from inside Mac OS X, either from within a Window or full-screen. It can also make a Windows application appear to run the same way as a Mac application — in its own floating window. Price is $80.

Nuevas funciones
Parallels Desktop for Mac Release Candidate 2 introduces several overdue improvements, including support for USB 2.0 and FAT32 Boot Camp partitions and fixes to the Coherence, drag-and-drop, and Transporter features. But best of all, the Parallels release candidates don’t require a new activation key to unlock all of these new features.
I’ve never been the biggest fan of Parallels Desktop for Mac. There was always a big reason not to use it, like memory leaks, speed hogs, faulty network drivers, etc. I finally gave in and installed the most recent RC build to finally give Vista a much-overdue spin. And I have to say, build 3120 is pretty darn cool. (more…)

How will the Bush Administration spin on the 60th anniversary of Hiroshima & Nagazaki bombings ? Over 150,000 civilians got killed in Hiroshima within days. "Only" 25,000 died within two years in Iraq, and mostly by the hands of opponents to the US army invasion.Yet. A sick parallel could be done - the "overall, lives were saved" kind of parallels, the "democracy has a price" kind of parallels.Just like with Hiroshima, the people of Baghdad well-foundedly feels victimized : the people is paying for the leaders. Unlike the Japanese people, the German people did admit his guilt for the country's extremist past and yet, the people of Dresden feels just the same.
The fact is the bombers never truly said they were sorry. They never asked for forgiveness. It's high time for the Allies to do it, to admit their share of the crimes committed during WWII.Should the United States do it for Hiroshima's 60th anniversary, they necessarily would have to do it for their Iraq aggression. Can the
