      The Paradox of Life

      Paradox
Wow, something very strange and disturbing has just happened out of the bloom. As I was minding my business, which is writing an "oh my god, i have a DEADLINE" article, when my yahoo messenger icon popped. Which is not unusual in itself. Still, when I saw the person trying to contact me, i froze. It's this guy I used to be close friends with a long time ago, and our friendship failed miserably, with me saying I never wanna talk to you again in my life. Well, never say never. I was curious to see what he has to say. Of course, this is not the first time he tried to contact me, but I always ignored his attempts. However, lately I find myself having a whole bunch of unhealthy curiosities, and well, a girl's gotta learn. Anywhoo, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, this bloke use

      The Eligible-Bachelor Paradox
It is a truth universally acknowledged that the available, sociable, and genuinely attractive man is a character highly in demand in social settings. Shattering the fishbowl – the paradox of choice
The law of attraction is about choice. We are free to choose our experience. I recently watched a short lecture given by the American psychologist and social scientist Barry Swartz. Here I will summarize the lecture and offer some thoughts on its content as it is relevant to the law of attraction. The lecture is about the consequences of the amazing levels of choice we have to deal with now, choice which just a few years ago was hardly imaginable. It’s certainly true – to give a rather trivial example, just look at the number of social bookmarking options you have for submission of this article – you can digg it, Stumble Upon it, add it to dropjack or technorati, there’s del.icio.us, de.lerio.us, blogmarks, frazzle, linkroll, scuttle, reddit, not to mention Myspace, facebook … the

      Birthday Paradox And Risk Evaluation
Take any random pair of people and the probability of them having the exact same birthday sits at (1/365)≈0.0027 or roughly 0.27%. The chance of it seems so low that many would ignore and assume it never occurring. The Birthday Paradox however makes available mathematical means to display that the “improbable” occurs quite more often than general belief. How many people does it take to have over 50% chance of a pair sharing the same birthday? 23 Explanation, please keep in mind this example ignores leap years. 1) With 23 people 253 possible pairs exist. 23*22/2=253 (Look up Permutations if you don’t understand this) 2) Now instead of finding the chance of two people having the same birthday, let us find the probability of them having DIFFERENT birthdays.

The nobody wants to live to be 140 years old PARADOX
The PARADOX of why no one wants to live to be at least 140 years old.Whenever I ask an audience, “Who wants to live to be at least 60 years old?”, they usually unanimously all raise their hands. Then what I do is to gradually increase the age in the question. Like, I might say something like “Ok, great, looks like everyone raised their hands”. Then I will rapidly start increasing the age like this, “Ok, how about 70 years old?” and I will pause to scan the audience to see if anyone drops out. Then in rapid fire succession I will ask “Hmmm, 80?,,, 90?,,, How about 100 years old?”. Usually some of the audience has dropped out by now. But what is very fascinating is that by the time I get up to the question “Who wants to live to be 140 years old?”, rarely does anyone raise

The Tata Nano Strikes Back--Does Jevons' Paradox Apply to Productivity, Too?
Can improvements in energy efficiency “save” modern civilization as we face declines in world oil production? While the efficiency revolution may let us drive on half the gas, the productivity revolution may make it affordable to twice as many--or more...One argument against the efficacy of improving energy efficiency is called Jevons’ Paradox. This suggests that, when we improve our energy efficiency, we also reduce our demand for energy from that same use. That decreased demand in relation to supply makes energy cheaper, which in turn makes us use more of it. It has been suggested that this “rebound effect” only accounts for 5-20% of efficiency gains, but I have written previously about the potential for a “shadow” rebound effect that potentially accounts for nearly the ent

The Paradox of Dreams and Love
It’s Christmas Eve. Yet I lack the complete enthusiasm associated with the season. I looked through my writing journal just now. This is what I wrote months ago… I see it in my dreams. But no one can take things from Dreamland to our world. The gates separating both realms are sized to our bodies; nothing else would pass through. Regretfully, I should have slept on, eternally dreaming about my forbidden fruit. Well, I love my dreams. They are usually vivid and weird. The above prose obviously talks about my love, or rather, lack thereof. Happy Holidays. Logen

However, the TTC highway will be bigger... much bigger... as wide as the length of 4 football fields. Trucks, cars and trains will operate on this highway that is planned to extend from Mexico to Canada through U.S. soil. What does Giuliani's involvement with this project mean? Personal Finance Paradox
After reading Trent’s excellent post over on the Simple Dollar about earnings vs. frugality I was inspired to throw my $0.02 into the ring. Personal Finance is your money. That breaks down pretty simply into money going in and money going out. Let’s call that money income and expenses, just for fun. What happens when you reduce your expenses? There is less going out and the same amount coming in. This is good, but it has its limits. After all, while you should spend less than you make, it is pretty difficult to spend less than zero in my experience. Taking the first 10% off of your spending is probably pretty easy, but taking 50% or 60% off of your expenses is hard. The Exact opposite principal applies to earning money. Cutting the first 10% of your spending is easy and so many people think increasing the income side 10% should be just as easy. Wrong. Increasing the money you make initially is hard. You have to start a business, get a side job, ask for a raise, etc. This re

Link Building: The paradox of Poverty amidst Plenty
An effective landing page is only as good as the visitors that it attracts. Hence, the next logical step after development of an effective landing page is to promote it. This involves attracting qualified visitors to it, by employing various online marketing efforts, viz. PPC or SEO , email marketing. Another frequently employed online marketing tool with the twin benefit of economy and effectiveness is Link Building. Link building is a practice of getting the other semantically similar websites to feature your link on their websites. Link building constitutes finding viable business partners willing to endorse your site. An authoritative link to your site counts as one vote toward your link popularity. Other site owners would link to a page, when they consider the content important. Lik

      The Paris Hilton Paradox
Michael Moore was originally scheduled to appear on CNN’s Larry King Live on Wednesday night. He likely would have discussed the Healthcare Issue that inspired his new film “Sicko,” which is something many American’s view as a priority in the upcoming 2008 Presidential election. Unfortunately, he got bumped. For Paris Hilton. Confused? Well, ”America’s Princess” just got out of jail for violating her probation. That’s obviously more important than Healthcare, right? This is just one example of the latest media trend that has taken a starkly scandalous turn into a world where Britney Spears’ latest umbrella attack takes precedence over truly relevant issues like Iraq & Afghanistan, Healthcare or other social issues that impact the lives of Americans every day. Who is to blame for all of this? We buy the tabloids that buy the pictures the paparazzi stalks celebrities to get. We watch the entertainment shows that get us up to dat

The Paradox of Play: Are kids today having enough fun?
Our era of superachievement angst and No Child Left Behind duress is not the first time adults have worried that academic pressures are prematurely crowding out the kind of hands-on playtime that kids love. It will also not be the last time that the crusade to restore the primacy of play runs the risk of eroding the very playfulness the crusaders are eager to see more of. The paradox of the endeavor seems all but unavoidable. Play advocates bolster their case by proclaiming play's social, emotional, and cognitive benefits, as David Elkind has recently done in The Power of Play: How Spontaneous, Imaginative Activities Lead to Happier, Healthier Children. Yet the more successful such advocates are in their instrumental defense of play, the further they stray from an appreciation of play as precisely the opposite—a pursuit that serves children's own (not always obviously constructive) purposes, rather than the didactic designs of their elders. It's a tension that play advocates of th

      Rafael Furcal's Paradox of Reliability
In my high stakes league a team posted a trade involving Rafael Furcal, so I took a closer look at Furcal. He was one of my main targets going into my auction; my auction plan involved me getting one of the group of Furcal, Reyes and Rollins as "Plan A" with various default positions depending on what happened. It just goes to show that you are better off being lucky than good. I got Rollins and not Furcal, but it could easily have gone the other way.To date, Furcal has hit 1 HR. However aside from power it appears that the rest of his season is in line with what could reasonably be expected from his hitting. His SB are down also, with only 7 to date, which appears at this point to be a function of his opportunities; a 20-25 SB season is still within the realm of possibility with some offensive improvement. But can this be expected?Currently, his line is as follows: 1 HR 25 RBI 7 SB .285/.352/.376, 89% contact rate, 9% BB rate, 32% hit rate, 0.93 walk/strikeout ratio. Shandler h

Paradox #1 by Christos Gage and Luis Henrique Ribeiro
"Sorry. That kid... Poole... he has a family. I have to notify them.""I overreacted. You know what it's like for women in this job."(it's got to be awful since she's got to spout terrible dialogue)Christos Gage's Paradox is apparently the story of regular cops in an extraordinary world--the coroners need necromancy degrees, flying demons are no big deal, and lycanthropes show up in scenes lifted directly from The Monster Squad. Gage has written some stuff at Marvel and DC and it's been all right--I remember liking his Deadshot series. Paradox (#1 anyway, I'll never know about #2 or #3 or #1 after page ten) is a piece of crap though.Gage writes for TV cop shows and maybe his dialogue's terrible on them too, but in Paradox it's all exposition. It's amateur hour stuff, both writing-wise and art-wise. Besides having problems with perspective, the artist can't figure out how to place objects in space, so the action scenes (I saw anyway) were really terrible.Oh, damn, I forgot abou

      The Hate Crimes Paradox
The House of Representatives passed today legislation adding homosexual, transgender and transsexual people to the list of those covered by hate crime laws. While the 237-180 vote was nearly party line, 14 Democrats opposed it while 25 Republicans supported it. If and when the Senate passes it, the bill will go to the desk of the President, who announced today he will likely veto it.I've never been a fan of hate crimes legislation. To me, having tougher sentences for hate crimes demeans victims of crimes that weren't done because of "hate." To me, it's almost as if it is not nearly as much of a crime when someone beats someone else up or kills him or her because of a reason other than racism, sexism, or some sort of discrimination. All crimes are committed because of some sort of hate. Hate crime laws do nothing to make our society more equal and less prejudiced. Identifying a certain crime as a "hate crime" only keeps the idea of "separate and unequal" alive.Nevertheless, this is n

I keep meaning to get to some posts on evolution, but I keep getting distracted by end-of-the-semester work (and winning money at poker). This is the concluding paragraph from a paper I just finished on the Fermi Paradox for a class. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, and I'm interested to see what my advisor thinks of it.The Fermi Paradox cannot logically conclude that humans are the only advanced intelligence in the galaxy, but the absence of evidence for ETI colonization of the galaxy is uggestive that no ETI has successfully formed a galactic civilization. This is not because no sufficiently advanced intelligence has developed technology, but it is because civilization itself is an unsustainable mechanism. SETI assumptions often imply that civilization is a necessary consequence of intelligence—but even if this were true, the ecological instability of civilization would render any galactic civilization short-lived. A galactic civilization may arise in the Mil

October 1993: The Great Phys-ed Paradox
As with many schools in the US, the Midwestern school that my Mother sent me to had both a strong sporting culture and a physical education program which mandated that “If you were physically able to take part, then you had to take part”. No excuses, no exception. I found this quite irritating, as I didn't want to take part. At least, not in the way that they wanted me to.IntroductionIt wasn't that I had something against school sports, or even sports in general, it was just the rigid way that the school applied the mandatory nature of its physical education program. Specifically, that it applied it to me at all. You see, as strange as it might sound, I'd never had to participated in normal physical education classes in Japan. Instead, I'd been given special leave to practice what my teachers considered to be 'more important' thing. Namely, competitive sports that looked good on school resumes, and which could be utilized to win nice shiny trophies.CoachingFrom the ag

      Keynes’s Paradox of Thrift
In the great depression of the 1930s, GDP fell, unemployment rose and the UK experienced a long period of deflation. In response to this disastrous economic situation, mainstream economists were at a loss as how to respond. Such a lengthy period of disequilibrium didn’t sit well with Classical theory which expected markets to operate smoothly and efficiently. One policy the National government did approve was the cutting of unemployment benefits. The rationale was that in times of a depression the govt should set an example by reducing its debt. This example actually inspired members of the public to send in their savings in the hope that it would help the economy.Alas this is precisely the worst response the Government could have taken. By reducing benefits they further reduced consumer spending and AD. This made areas of high unemployment even more impoverished. When people saved rather than spent their money it just made the recession worse. It was J.M. Keynes who was one of the m

      Abortion: The Ultimate Paradox
I got this graph from an interesting study done by a gentleman named Gregory S. Paul: (1)He concludes from the data that:"Increasing adolescent abortion rates show positive correlation with increasing belief and worship of a creator, and negative correlation with increasing non-theism and acceptance of evolution . . ." 1No you didn't read that wrong. The study indicates more secular societies have LESS abortion than religious ones. Now, I don't have the sort of moral objection to abortion that some religious people do, but all things considered I'd prefer girls that age were not getting pregnant at all. The data begs us to ask: Why does Christianity apparently prosper in societies were one of the things Christians abhor most, abortion, is most pervasive? If you have data on this subject please share it with the rest of us. The data I have doesn't make it clear whether the relationship is simply correlation or causation. It could be that both the problems of Christianity and abor

      The Paradox of Intolerance
If you are an atheist, it is likely that you have first-hand experience with religious intolerance. You have learned to hold your tongue in certain situations (e.g., family gatherings where religious persons are involved, around religious co-workers or supervisors, etc.), and you have probably experienced as least some adverse consequences for failing to do so in other situations. You are fully aware that many believers despise you, fear you, and misunderstand you. If you've spent any time studying religious texts, such as the Christian bible, you have learned that these negative attitudes are not simply a twisted interpretation of religion but painfully clear in the texts themselves.Of course, if you are an atheist who has expressed your lack of belief, it is equally likely that you have been accused of being intolerant yourself. You are perceived as hating religion and religious believers. You want to ban their "holy" texts, prevent them from engaging in their cherished rituals (all
