There are some really great songs coming south from our friends in Columbus. And some of the more recent gems are coming straight from singer songwriter Megan Palmer. Palmer has just released a brand new full length album, her second, and I can tell you that if you dig female indie singer songwriters, this one should be right up your alley. Palmer is a seriously talented singer and I will be surprised if this new album does not garner her some real national attention.
The new album was recorded out west in Joshua Tree, California by Bingo (Kevin Richey) of the Bingo Band and The Thriftstore All-Stars under the supervision of Tim Easton. She also gets some help from anther great Columbus talent on the album, Eric Metronome.
And it sure doesn’t hurt that this new album is being released from our friends at Sunken Treasure Records, which, as they put it, is a Donewaiting.com situation.

At 13, she and her family moved to St. Louis, Missouri where she was exposed to a wide variety of music. This African-American, Caramel Bella is making history as the first black singer to have a song on the country music charts since Dona Mason’s “Green Eyes (Cryin’ Those Blue Tears)” in 1987. Not only is she making history, but she is making beautiful country music as a so-called “outsider”.
In addition to Palmer’s race, she is also from Pittsburgh and was raised in St. Louis. Her non-Southern roots raises several eyebrows and begs the question, “Is she really country?” Her latest song “Country Girl,” which entered the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart at No. 58, seems to address this question. This album, which reached the Top 20 in America and got to number four in England, showcased the group at its least pretentious and most musicianly -- with the exception of a few moments on "Three Fates" and perhaps "Take a Pebble," there isn't much excess, and there is a lot of impressive musicianship here. Brian Buress has been an unexpected source of strength for the Orioles. Summoned to the rotation after stints in long relief, he’s done relatively well and has kept the team in ball games. Well, on Thursday, there was a change to the script. Up against the powerful, but very disappointing White Sox, Buress got hit hard – real hard. It hit hard because of the novelty of the act (allegedly the first supergroup in rock history), but felt more like a collection of individual efforts and ideas than a collective work. All doubts were dissipated by the release of Tarkus in 1971. Side one of the original LP is occupied by the 21-minute title epic track, beating both Genesis' "Supper's Ready" and Yes' "Close to the Edge" by a year. Unlike the latter group's cut-and-paste technique to obtain long suites, "Tarkus" is a thoroughly written, focused piece of music. It remains among the Top Ten classic tracks in progressive rock history. Because of the strength of side one, the material on the album's second half has been quickly forgotten -- with one good reason: it doesn't match the strength of its counterpart -- but "Bitches Crystal" and "A Time and a Place" make two good prog rock tracks, the latter being par

Found the debut album Everything That Shines by Swedish quartet CJ Palmer in the mailbox yesterday. The album was released last week on the band's own label - Silver Road Records - so the boys are currently doing all the work themselves. Think a powerpop version of Savage Garden or maybe Roxette, and you should have some idea of where the band is located musically. Some might claim that there isn't anything new under the sun, and they might have a point here. But the songs are melodic, radio friendly and very, very catchy, and it will be a very (negative) surprise if this album doesn't find a large audience, as the music (in my opinion) should please the ears of lots and lots of people!+ 34Peter is really high on German indie pop band Tornister and calls them "the new indie pop hope from Oldenburg". Back in October I wrote about eating at Charlie Palmer's Aureole Las Vegas restaurant in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. So I was pleasantly surprised to see a Charlie Palmer recipe in last week's Denver Post food section.
Then I realized how easily this recipe for Herb-Broiled Cod fits into the Weight Watchers Flex Plan. Even with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter, one serving (6 ounces of fish) plus embellishments is about 10.5 points. That's the wonderful thing about fish - it's very low in points! If you could halve the butter and oil, you could reduce it to 8 points. Perfect!

Several years ago a sewing friend showed me a method for making welt pockets using graph paper. It was a technique she learned from a Palmer/Pletsch workshop. I thought it was great but have never seen it in printed or even referenced in any sewing publications.
Just wondering: is anyone else is familiar with this technique? Do you prefer this method over traditional methods? Why or why not?
