Central Park: The Landscape as Painting, and the Landscape Photograph
Leaving the Boathouse yesterday, I snapped this photo of the boaters on the water, and later, as I was looking at it, the image reminded me of a 19th century landscape painting. That's by design. Olmsted and Vaux, in designing Central Park, created vistas that would resemble paintings, like the ones by their friends in the Hudson River School. They designed Central Park with the notion that city dwellers would encounter the sublime as they walked around different areas of the park.Photographers in the 19th century often borrowed compositions from landscape painters, framing their shots in similar ways. In looking at the image above, I think I must carry around with me similar preconceptions of the sublime landscape and how it should be conventionally composed. In addition, my camera is an

"Vespa 2" In Progress10X8Oil on Linen PanelJust this far today. The tricky part of doing a series of some theme is to try to make each of the paintings similar enough to let the viewer know the intent of a collection, yet different enough to make each one unique to itself. This one has proved a bit more difficult than the first...mostly because of the blue variations. Where the soft golden light is hitting behind the shield below the seat, the blue has turned almost green. However, I didn't want the color to disassociate itself from the rest of the Vespa. Tomorrow I'll tackle the tires, the foreground and tighten up a few things... For those of you who don't know, my Dad was a tire dealer when I was growing up. Remaining to be done, when the under paint is tough dry, is some glazing for a soft haze (sea spray) over the lower background cliffs, plus some small work (detailing) of areas like the main wave and sand (small stones etc).It was just one of those days when the light, tide etc all combined to produce a wonderful subject... a falling tide provided some wonderful refection's on the beach and thanks to the flat shelve of rock in the bay the waves were much smaller than those just north at Whitby. As I've mentioned in a previous post about this location, this is by no means an easy one to

In our shop we meet a lot of people who like deer - and we have to say we like deer too, we like deer hinds and stags too. So we decided that we have to have a glass painting template showing stags. In this template you will find one standing stag and a head of a stag, similar to a trophy. You can paint one or both of them. If you miss the deer hind. You can try a trick. Take the standing stag, don't paint the antlers and try to make the neck a little smaller, you will have a perfect deer hind. If you don't like window colour you can of course colour the stags with any other paint, cut them out of the paper, make your own picture of an Alpine wood. Have fun painting.

      Daily Painting, "Irises" In Progress
"Irises" In Progress12X9Oil on Raymar PanelClick the picture for a larger view.I only had time to work a while on this one this afternoon. I went chasing to a framer's shop this morning on the news of a sale. As is usual with me (not the early bird here), I was a bit late and missed the beginning. I did manage to come home with a few smaller frames, one I am particularly fond of and several that can be used for the 5X7's. At any rate, when I did get to it, I spent most of my time refining the blossom and then working a bit to balance some of the leaves. Obviously, I still have the bottom half to contend with and trying to make some sense of those leaves. We'll see if I get there.....tomorrow!

Oil Painting - Night Time Fun at the Nottingham Goose Fair
"Night Time Fun", Nottingham Goose Fair. 8"x10".Oil on canvas covered board. Alistair Butt © 2008.A change from the normal daylight subjects, a night time painting of the Nottingham Goose Fair .The reason/inspiration for choosing this subject was quite simple... I wanted to capture colours and the many light effects, with light coming from all sides and of different colours and how they effected the stands and the people at the fair. This view was selected, primarily due to the two smaller canvas roofed stalls almost silhouetted against the colourful fair ground ride behind them, the colour and tonal contrast was superb.

"Irises" In Progress12X9Oil on Raymar PanelClick on picture to enlarge the view.I sort of hate to replace the former blog picture with a new one....I was wallowing in that blue saucer and just eating it up!! But moving onto the next painting...of the first iris to bust open in my front garden. Which brings me to green....How many variations of green can there be? Infinite, seemingly. There is blue-green, yellow-green, blackish-green, light reddish ochre-green, deep purple-green, on and on. The background of this iris is mostly a blurred out boxwood that sits behind it about four feet. The trick I am finding is to make the iris move to its proper position, up front and dignified. I think of irises as formal flowers....not sure why, but they seem so elegant compared to common daisies

      Wallpaper VS. Painting
PaintPaint is one of the most common forms of decorating walls. It is simple and comes in a wide spectrum of colors. Every shade you can think of is possible. The variety is truly astounding with shades within shades and subtly different hues. Perhaps, this can become a problem: too much choice. Even among the whites, there are various shades: pearl, off-white, cream, eggshell, chalk, Queen Anne’s lace. One book listed some fifty different shades of white for a would-be decorator to choose from.In addition to the shades or hues, painters are allowed a selection of types. This applies beyond interior and exterior paint and extends to glossy, matte and flat and anything in between. Glossy captures the light and reflects it, enhancing the color; matte is dull, neutral, letting the color spe

"Gerber Daisies"10X8Oil on Canvas PanelAvailableFirst attempt at a plein air painting....which usually would not be a still life, but this was a demonstration at an outdoor event. Kind of a long story...but mostly this was due to arm twisting by one of my art guild friends named Scott Boyle. He is a veteran plein air painter and he came to the event all geared up for two people to paint. He had the two pochades, the paints, brushes, canvas, turps, the pot of flowers, all of it. I have never painted outdoors before, but I admire Scott quite a bit, so when he asked me to pitch in I felt privileged to paint along side of him. It was fun for me to give this a try, not my usual controlled environment and painstaking detailed effort. More like painting on the fly.Well, here is what I ended up

All that was need was to wait for a group of people or person to stand in the correct position, the couple with five children playing for the soft toys gave me the ideal subject and a few minutes to quickly sketch and make notes.A few of the other ideas seen:close ups of the displays on the stands, some very interesting colour combinations with the various soft or inflatable charaters, prizes etc, some nice light effects for games like 'hook a duck', again close up with the light shi

"Lip Hanger" painting with horse who's lip is hanging.
When I was a kid, my horse Lucky would take a nap. I'd see him out there in the field with his lip hanging. I'd sneak up on him and take a little pebble and stick it in his bottom lip. He'd wake up with a snort and flap his bottom lip until the pebble came out. I'd laugh like a fool.Last night, we sat here watching tv and Robert fell asleep in his chair. I decided since he wasn't talking to me for a bit, I'd go get my colored pencils and take part in the drawing challenge on the EAG forum. I went out to the studio, picked up a piece of canson paper, and grabbed a handful of pencils, without choosing my colors.Back in the house, I sat down in my chair and began to draw this image posted by Sheri Gordon for the drawing event this week.I was hurrying to see how much I'd get done in the al
