A March 2008 survey released by Seastone, a leading manufacturer of gift card packaging found that 84% of consumers would purchase a gift card if it came with free packaging. The survey also found that 62% of consumers were more likely to purchase a gift card if multiple packaging options were available.  According to the survey, the most popular form of gift card packaging is a tin box, followed by paper pouches, greeting cards, and stuffed animal designs. It is always fun to see new idea's executed at retail. I started 2008 in Canada and reviewing the Dairy section of a large retailer immediately noticed the large plastic bags of milk in the dairy section. Canadian retailers in the Ontario region sell milk in 1.33 litre plastic bags and bundle 3 in a larger bag. The consumers have plastic milk pitchers in their homes. Once purchased, the consumer takes the bag home and drops it into the pitcher and snips the end with scissors creating a pour opening.I understand in Western Canada the 4 litre plastic jug has replaced this bag method.

It's been a while since we had an update on Soldner-X. Though we don't have any more "official" gameplay details, Play-Asia.com has unveiled the "limited" first edition packaging and release date for the PC shooter. My last post on package design has prompted some great comments, which is wonderful. I was trying to be provocative after all. One common thread I noticed when I talk to folks in person about packaging and that I saw reflected in some of the comments on here is the notion that packaging is ultimately just about having your logo on a box. In which case packaging is superfluous at best, and ego-tastic at worst. In other words, specially designed direct-to-consumer packaging is an exercise in vanity that will end up in the trash ultimately, so why bother? I think that if you approach package design as simply another way to get your winery logo into some wino’s house, it almost certainly will get thrown away - immediately - just like all the other boring cardboard packers that wineries ship. I also hate to throw away usable things, so instead of waste money on something that will break in a short time, I us containers from packaging I already bought for something else. Here are a few items I've used, some which have lasted me longer than those $15-$20 plastic bins:1. Empty Bandaid boxes: Top lid flap folded up to align with back and secured with tape. Placed on back. One holds Bandaids stacked on sides from left to right. The other holds ointment tubes. Both fit in my rectangle Tupperware container I used for a first aid kid way back in Girl Scouts when earning my first aid badge.2. Cell phone boxes: Top lid flap removed, tipped onto the narrow long side, stacked. Serves as envelope holders. 3. Small narrow cardboard box with flaps removed, laid on back. Houses tape dispenser, small Rolodex card file holder, and stapler. K

I just finished the most amazing book: Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing our Daughters from Marketers' Schemes. I highly recommend this for any mom or teacher (and isn't that what all moms are anyway?) Plain and simple, the authors break down how girls today are targeted by marketers every step of the way, through what they see on TV to what the covers of board games have on them (by the way, not ONE had a girl winning the game.) In our house, we don't watch commercials, even the ones on PBS. :) Although some of my sitters have been aghast to hear that my kids don't watch Disney films, the only thing my kids have seen is Mary Poppins. (No offense to you if you like them, I think 4 is far too young to pretend your prince needs to rescue you. Not to mention every "princess" in the movies has no mother, who has been conveniently killed off because she interferes with the plot. But I digress.) And while I thought that I was being a little overprotective, after reading this book, I'm gla

Microsoft has released new shots of the boxes that Windows Vista and the Office 2007 System will ship in. Designed to be user-friendly, the new packaging is a small, hard, plastic container that's designed to protect the software inside for life-long use.  It provides a convenient and attractive place for you to permanently store both discs and documentation. The new design will provide the strength, dimensional stability and impact resistance required when packaging software today.  Our plan is to extend this packaging style to other Microsoft products after the launch of Windows Vista and 2007 Office system.
