      Alligator Pacifier chain from Sigikid
Young kids absolutely love their pacifiers and they’re great for soothing the littlest ones to sleep especially during car rides; however, as a parent you are only able to do one thing at a time while driving and that is driving. So when baby drops her pacifier on the floor and is unable to fumble [...]

      It's MY Pacifier
The dummy, the pacifier, the soother or what I like to call the mute button. Whatever you call it in your home, I'm sure that there will be or has been a constant battle with this little thing. My twin girls, Amy and Lilly, sleep with theirs at night and sometimes create havoc if they drop it overboard through the slats of their cots if they realise that they don’t have it. During the day is when the battle rages. When it is time for breakfast they take them out and head to the kitchen ready to pile into the first meal of the day. At this point either Emma or I, if I am there, will hide them out of site hoping that they will forget about them and just start playing. So breakfast is over and we let them back into the lounge so they can play and try to cover every square inch of carpet

      Memoirs of a Pacifier
Just remember, no matter how bad your life seems, there's always someone worse off. It's starting to make sense to me why those darn pacifiers always go missing... And yes, this post is partially in response to an anonymous commenter's request to see more pictures of my "odd-looking" children. I'm still scratching my head at that one.

      Weaning from the pacifier
This is actually a subject I never really worried about. I was the person who refused to give my son a pacifier before he was born. However, the nurses at the hospital felt differently and gave him one. You may ask where was I? Why didn’t I object? I honestly don’t remember and he was with me the entire time! Hmmm….. Anyway, it happened and he seemed so content with it that DH and I decided to let him use them. Our son was a big sucker…..needing to breast feed every 2 hours around the clock until he was almost 11 months old, having a paci in his mouth the rest of the time (not literally, but almost). He needed the pacifier to sleep for naps and at bedtime and when he was having a melt down in the car. It was his “security blanket”. I did not have a time frame in mind for when I wanted him to stop using it because it made him happy and was fulfilling an obvious need of his. I figured when he was  “too old” for it, one of us would realiz

Pacifier Separation - A Major Trauma of Toddlerhood
Some people love them. Some people hate them. Most are floating around somewhere in between. As for my family, we are familiar with all the arguments for and against. In our situation, and especially with Alex needing extra comfort during his hospitilizations, we decided to use one. Who are we kidding, when he was in the hospital I could have seriously used one. At his age now though, I am trying to begin weaning him off it, especially since lately he seems more inclined to look for it, or carry it around with him. Now the big issue is how to actually accomplish the separation itself. I scrounged around and hit up some friends for ideas on what worked for them. I also waded through the piles and PILES of tips across the internet on this topic. So if you’re looking for a way to make the break as cleanly and painlessly as possible, try some of these tips: 1. It’s broken. My friends John and Robin gave me this idea. When their son was smaller and not wanting to gi

      Pacifier
Few reasons you should not let your child use a dummy pacifier. First of all, using pacifier is likely to have uneven teeth as a result of the pressure of pacifier on young children’s gum. Secondly, it is not good looking to suck on a pacifier, sometimes till a very old age (addicted easily). It is also very troublesome when you have to travel - imagine what if you forget to bring it and the child is addicted. And lastly, it posts a choking hazard.  It is very sad today, to learn that a 14-month old baby chocked to death in his own pacifier.  He accidentally swallowed it, suffered 90min before dying.  This really made my day gloomy.  Poor baby, poor parents, poor babysitter…  Read more here.

      Anesthesia mask with integrated pacifier.
Small children sometimes need surgery, too. And sometimes they need anesthesia. But, as nurse Monica Dahlstrand experienced when assisting during an operation, ordinary masks do not work very well with small children. She started thinking of a better way. Babies find comfort when breast fed and they also find comfort with pacifiers. When brought in for surgery, babies, like adults, have not eaten for some time. But unlike adults, babies have very little impulse control, making it difficult to put them under and keep them there for the duration of the surgery. But, by combining a baby sized anesthesia mask with a pacifier, Monica Dahlstrand made the whole process of performing surgery on babies much easier. She has won several inventor's prizes and the pacifier mask is protected by a world patent. More on the Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology website (Swedish only).
