credit: Jean Baptiste MondinoThe actual reason why I am now sitting in Art Basel's Media center is the fact that I got invited by Cartier to a private little concert by Patti Smith, which took part yesterday evening at Basel's St. Elisabeth church. As you may know there currently is an exhibition of Patti Smith's photographs at La Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris. And since Patti

Patti Smith, punk goddess, lifelong activist and Rock Hall of Famer, has an affinity for the most poetic rock music of the past few decades. For her latest album, Twelve, she shares 12 renditions of beloved rock songs by artists both living and gone. While you may think you know these songs better than most, maybe because you can sing them in your sleep, guess what: Patti knows them better. Thats right--its time to get schooled.
After Bryan Ferry's Dylanesque, the years' second major cover album comes as "Twelve" which is Patti Smith's first album of new studio recordings since Trampin' in 2004. This is included with some hit songs from rock artists such as Paul Simon, Nirvana, Jefferson Airplane, Neil Young, the Allman Brothers Band, Bob Dylan, Tears for Fears.
Definitely the songs love to be in Patti's hands, but

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was tonight -- with R.E.M. and Van Halen getting inducted. Two of my favorites.Still, to me, the most interesting story is Patti Smith, and her op-ed piece in the New York Times:On the eve of this event I asked myself many questions. Should an artist working within the revolutionary landscape of rock accept laurels from an institution? Should laurels be offered? Am I a worthy recipient?I have wrestled with these questions and my conscience leads me back to Fred and those like him — the maverick souls who may never be afforded such honors. Thus in his name I will accept with gratitude. Fred Sonic Smith was of the people, and I am none but him: one who has loved rock ’n’ roll and crawled from the ranks to the stage, to salute history and plant seeds for the erratic magic landscape of the new guard.Because its members will be the guardians of our cultural voice. New York rock club CBGB got its final gig on Sunday night as Patti Smith played to a packed house. The singer performed a 2 hour set which included covers of The Ramones, The Velvet Underground and Blondie amongst others. Television guitarist Richard Lloyd sat in on numerous songs, including a duet with Smith on his band's "Marquee Moon." Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea also made an apperance on songs such as The Who's "My Generation." At the show's end Smith read a list of names of deceased people who had played the club including Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee Ramone and Johnny Thunders. CBGB officially closes its doors on Oct. 31 after 33 year in business. The closing occurs after a year of disputes with their landlord left the club without a lease. CBGBs owner Hilly Kristal has indicated plans to relocate the club to Las Vegas, NV.Patti and Fred Smith - 'It Takes Time'from 'Until The End of The World'.
Patti Smith (pictured above) from her 1964 New Jersey High School Year Book.Back in October when Patti closed the CBGB's all us Blondie fans thought she performed 'The Hunter Get's Captured By The Game' as some kind of back-handed nod to Debbie and the boys. Although originally recorded by Smokey Robinson, Blondie covered this tune on their 1982 album 'The Hunter'. However, I recently got hold of two live recordings of Patti Smith dating back to 1975 and on both occasions she sings this tune, some years before Blondie committed their version to vinyl. It's still not a patch on Blondie's version, but have a listen for yourself.'The Hunter Get's Captured By The Game' (1975 live recording)more Patti SmithPatti at CBGB's 2006 part 1Patti at CBGB's 2006 part 2Patti & Fred Smith - It Takes Time
Finally got my hands on a recording of Patti Smith's last gig at CBGB's on 15th October 2006. A pleasant surprise to hear Patti salute Deborah Harry and Blondie during her rendition of 'The Tide is High' and forgetting the words to 'Pale Blue Eyes'.Here's my favourite five. The Hunter Gets Captured By The GameKimberly/The Tide Is HighPale Blue EyesMarquee MoonRamones Medleymore Patti Live At CBGB's 2006
