The Cowley Road Carnival is a multi-cultural event, celebrating the diverse communities that call East Oxford home. Lewis Hamilton has cruised into Oxford to meet his fans and sign copies of his book - despite a nearby demonstration with the potential to upset proceedings. According to local newspaper the Oxford Mail, about 800 fans lined up to meet the racer when he appeared at the local Borders store on Monday evening to sign his new autobiography. But the allotted two-hour time slot was reportedly cut short - meaning that not everyone in the queue was able to meet him and some fans were left disappointed. Oxford was a busy place on Monday night, with demonstrators gathering for protests about a debate at the Oxford Union scheduled in nearby St Michael’s Street for 7pm. Hamilton’s signing had been due to end at 7pm. Despite all this, most people seem to have enjoyed themselves - apparently the queue started to form at around ten in the morning. In past years it was "karaoke" and "blogger," but the Oxford American Dictionary's word of the year for 2007 came this close to being  "tase." That was the noun-turned-verb made  famous by UF student Andrew Meyer', who cried out,  "Don't Tase Me, Bro!" as campus police stunned him with a Taser at a campus speech by U.S. Sen. John Kerry in September. Video of Meyer's outburst and arrest became a YouTube hit, fodder for late-night talk show hosts, and catnip for  T-shirts and other memorabilia. But alas, Oxford chose "locavore" as word of the year. It refers to the popular eat-local movement. How's this for 'word of the year' usage: "I'm as much of a locavore as the next gal, but chicken tastes like it got tased one too many times."

Yay! My drawing was accepted by the Oxford Art Society for their annual Open Exhibition. It was on the blog a few months ago: you can see it here. I know this isn't really a big deal in the great scheme of things, but I'm very excited. I've never had a picture exhibited anywhere before; in fact, I've never submitted anything before. I went to the private view yesterday, and I have to say, I don't think my modest little drawing looked totally out of place among all the works by professional artists.
