      1 Month from Overland Track
I went to book the bus from Lake St Claire to Cradle Mountain today and found that there is no bus service on the day we need it. We could charter but the standard fees were 4 times more expensive and might have been even worse considering we need it on a public holiday. So it looks like we will be doing a 2 car shuffle unless we can think of some other solution or find someone who is looking to share a charter. That means driving two cars up to Lake St Claire, leaving one there, driving the rest of the way to Cradle and leaving one there. Then at the end of the walk driving back to Cradle to pick up the car from there and then driving back home in two cars again. Ain’t that going to be fun! With a bit of luck we’ll at least get some good accommodation up there for the night before we start. I’ve been putting a route idea into Google MapsEarth which I’ll have up soon, it will give a better idea of my plans as they are in my head. I’ve found this to be a p

Yangshuo and the Dragon’s Backbone Terraces – Overland in Southern China
Drooping willow tree leaning over noisy stream: check. Cobbled street lined with swaying red lanterns: check. Cyclist wearing conical hat wobbling down said street: check. Everything I had come to expect of a tiny Southern Chinese town; Yangshuo is a popular backpacker hangout stuffed with character and teeming with small cafes. But the most striking characteristic of Yangshuo is its natural environs, settled as it is amongst atmospheric karst mountains. These tall, thin, rounded, limestone peaks are the epitome of the romantic images people tend to have of China, formed from patterned plates in their grandmother’s house. I had caught an excellent sleeper bus there from Shenzhen. Upon arrival in Yangshuo, my friends and I were instantly struck by the sight of the ethereal, mossy-green peaks. We were also immediately inundated by hotel touts – in particular, one persistent chap called Larry who was dressed in a rather snappy suit. He corralled us into going to his hotel which was br

Washington Cascades Overland Tour 2007 - Final Thoughts
Over four days, I completed a 671 mile adventure (not counting the additional 465 miles to get to the starting point and back home again) following an overland route through the Cascade Mountains of Washington state, stretching from the Columbia River near Carson, Washington to Chopaka at the border crossing with British Columbia. From my records, about 63% of the overland route was on forest roads. Over these four days, my Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser was driven hard, physically traveling roughly the same mileage that it would take to get to Los Angeles from Seattle via I-5 without leaving Washington state (is this what is considered “severe service” by the manufacturer?). Near the British Columbia border, the odometer on my Land Cruiser also achieved the 190,000 mark. (more…)

Washington Cascades Overland Tour 2007: Intro
For the past year, I’ve had the desire to map out and drive an overland route through the Cascade Mountains of Washington state from the Columbia River near Oregon all the way to northern border with British Columbia. Last year (August 2006), my son and I completed a portion of this route from Cle Elum to Mt. Adams (see Cascade Overland Adventure - August 2006) but did not go any further South because of time constraints. At the time, I knew little of any possible routes from I-90 North to British Columbia. Shortly after that trip last August, I sold my Jeep YJ Wrangler and purchased my Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser with the goal in mind to make it into an overland expedition vehicle. Winter and Spring came and finally the snow thawed in the high country. With vacation scheduled for August, I started getting serious about mapping out a route through the Washington Cascades. The Overland Track - Getting Started
The Overland Track is Tasmania’s and possibly Australia’s premier hiking experience, starting at the world renowned Cradle Mountain it snakes through Cradle Mountain and Lake St Claire National Park in Tasmania’s central highlands. The track is about 80km long (Depending on start/finish points and sidetracks). It is open all year round but in the walking season (1 November to 30 April) a booking is required which includes a $150 fee and the requirement to walk North to South. Assuming you already have the gear required for a 5-8 Day walk and transportation (To Tasmania at least) arranged and are planning to walk during the walking season I will outline the planning and preparation required from there. Before leaving anywhere you need to book for the day you will begin the walk, you can do this at http://www.overlandtrack.com.au, by phone on (03 6233 6047) or in person at the Cradle, Lake St Clair, Freycinet or Mt Field visitor centers. From November 1 2007 the booki

Whiskey Dick Wildlife Area Overland Tour 07.21.07
After a night of camping along the Yakima River, my daughter and I got up early, broke camp and headed to Ellensburg, Washington to meet up with the Northwest Backroad Drivers group to explore the Whiskey Dick Wildlife Area just east of Ellensburg. After a stop for a quad iced americano and to top off the gas tank, we pulled into the Bar 14 Restaurant for the morning meet up. We were running a little late by time we arrived. Already eating breakfast were Rich (driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee), Jan and their 4 year old granddaughter Tara and Jerry our tour leader for the weekend (driving his Ford Bronco II). (more…)

      Going Overland in December
I booked our day to start the Overland Track last night, 27th December. The booking system only opened on the 1st July and I found that January already had a few days with only a few spots left in the 3 days the system had been open. The cost was $300 for two, steep really. Plus we need to renew out parks pass in December. Earlier in the year the minister announced the fee would increase from $100 to $150, citing that it brought the cost in line with similar popular walks in New Zealand (Eg, Milford and Kepler Tracks), what she didn’t mention is how much better managed those track s are and how you get your value for money. The huts on the NZ walks are of a much higher quality and in bad weather you even get choppered to the next hut, the tracks themselves are also apparently in better condition. The track is also apparently in danger of being “loved to death” and so a new walk of similar length is being planned on the Tasman Peninsula called the Three Capes Track, th
