Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac takeover and conservatorship - Impacts and Outcomes
The treasury along with the Federal Reserve and Federal Housing regulator (FHFA) announced a take over via conservatorship of the government sponsored entities of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Current actions will definitely provide a cushion, but long term structural reform is needed to ensure this does not happen again and tax payer bailout losses are minimized. They (the government) have protecte

Potential outcomes from a weekend in Vegas
(Editor's note: This is the post I had scheduled for Friday before a massive storm came in Thursday night and knocked out our internet connection and didn't come back until after I'd left town. Enjoy nonetheless.)I'm headed to Las Vegas again this weekend for that other geek past time of mine - a fantasy football draft. It's been pointed out to me that I have a penchant for films set in Vegas, but

Bowel Disease Flare-Ups Affect Pregnancy Outcomes
According to a new study, for pregnant women with inflammatory bowel disease, a relapse increases the risk that they’ll give birth prematurely and have a low-birth-weight infant. Inflammatory bowel disease includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. While treatment can keep the conditions under control, relatively little is known about treatment and response among women who experi

GIC says deep recession is but one of three likely outcomes
April 25, 2008 GIC says deep recession is but one of three likely outcomes Risk of worst-case scenario is much higher now though: Tony Tan By Bryan Lee THE world could face its worst recession in 30 years, but that is, for now, just one of three possible scenarios that the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) has drawn up. GIC deputy chairman Tony Tan yesterday said the gloomy outlook he delivered at a staff meeting on Monday was not a prediction for the global economy. As the probability of this worst-case scenario being realised had risen substantially, however, he decided to highlight it at the event. 'Let me state clearly that this is not GIC's forecast for the global economy,' he said, in response to queries by The Straits Times. 'As part of GIC's risk management disc

      Odd Outcomes
I spend a good bit of time in rental cars when traveling for business. One of the great things I get to experience is satellite radio. Specifically, the comedy channels. A few weeks back I was in the car for about an hour and was listening to one of the comedy channels and heard a story from a comedian that was probably the funniest "clean" joke I've heard in a long time - and with...

PTSD increases substance abuse risk and severity, worsens outcomes
From one-third to one-half of those seeking treatment for a substance-use disorder (SUD) may also have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A multi-center study published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research of PTSD among individuals seeking treatment for substance abuse has found a greater prevalence of PTSD among those who were drug- rather than alcohol-dependent, and that having PTSD was associated with a more severe course and worse outcome for a SUD. "We already knew that there is a quite relevant association between PTSD and SUDs," said Martin Driessen, professor of psychiatry at Ev. Hospital Bielefeld in Germany, and corresponding author for the study. "More specifically, PTSD is a risk factor for the development of a SUD, particularly a drug dependence.

      Nurses Improve Care and Outcomes
Once again the value of nurses in providing quality care and improved outcomes for patients has been demonstrated by a study involving family medicine practices and diabetic patients. From the Annals of Family Medicine; January/February 2008.This result is not surprising. However, this particular study looks at outcomes in family practices with Nurse Practitioners versus physicians alone and practices with physicians and Physician Assistants. The practices with NPs provided better care.John Q. Public may not understand why this is so, but nurses will certainly understand why. The minimum education requirements for PAs and NPs is vastly different, as is the content and focus. You can become a PA with an Associate degree, whereas an NP now has to have an MSN or equivalent. Nurses are taught

Study: Method of flap creation doesn't affect LASIK visual outcomes
LASIK News Lasik University Study: Method of flap creation doesn't affect LASIK visual outcomesAug 8, 2007 Everyone wants to see well after LASIK surgery. LASIK candidates and surgeons alike are interested in determining which surgical tools and techniques provide the best visual outcomes. There's been much discussion regarding whether patients see better after an "all-laser" LASIK experience, where the corneal flap is created with an IntraLase femtosecond (FS) laser, or when they have a traditional LASIK procedure where the flap is created with a bladed, or "mechanical," microkeratome.According to a recent Mayo Clinic College of Medicine study, there's no significant difference.Study designTwenty-one (21) patients received LASIK for myopia or myopic astigmatism, with one eye having the corneal flap created with an IntraLase FS laser (IntraLase Corp.) and the other eye having the flap created with a mechanical microkeratome (model: Bausch & Lomb Hansatome). The patient

Sewer Scope Outcomes Differ In Portland, Beaverton
My blog readers know I’m a big fan of sewer scopes. In my opinion, they’re well worth the $100 or so homebuyers in the Portland area spend.I’ll get to two examples that highlight their importance. But first, what is a sewer scope? It’s the examination of a home’s sewer line conducted by sending a camera from a home’s clean-out all the way to the city main. The scope searches for root intrusions, gaps in line, problems that wouldn’t be found in a typical home inspection. Now back to those examples.I recently had homebuyers in the Sellwood neighborhood of SE Portland buy a home. At the same time, I had homebuyers go under contract for a home in Beaverton. Both conducted sewer scopes during their inspection period, but the negotiated outcomes were quite different. For the house in Sellwood, the sewer scope showed that the sewer line was fine on the property itself. However, there were huge holes on the city portion leading up to the main; so much so that the inspector ca

Older People Undergoing LASIK Can Achieve Good Outcomes
CHICAGO, April 2007 — Older individuals undergoing LASIK can achieve positive outcomes, along with a good safety profile, says a University of Illinois at Chicago study. Adjustments were made in vision corrections to compensate for differences in the way the eye's clear front surface (cornea) heals in people 40 or older, said investigator and study co-author Dimitri Azar, MD. "We are seeing an increasing demand for LASIK surgery for older adults, who present special challenges," Azar said. The study involved 710 consecutive laser eye surgeries in 424 people between 40 and 69. In all groups studied, 91% to 97% achieved 20/40 uncorrected vision for nearsightedness or farsightedness. But Azar said presbyopia, which affects near vision in older people, is a special problem. One solution is monovision, when one eye is corrected for near vision and the other for distance.

The Five Outcomes of Any Trade
When you enter a trade, you expect prices to move in your favor and gain profit from your temporary assumption of risk. The outcome is not always profit, however, and losses can be very frustrating in the market. Even though human nature primes us to put more emphasis on current events (and outcomes), trading success hinges on probabilitstic thinking and creating a positive edge over many trades taken consistently through a proven trading method or system. Realize that “you are not your trades.” You also are not your system or method. Studying the application of the five mathematical outcomes of any trade can lift your condifence and quell the psychological pain from focusing too much on recent outcomes from your trades. After you enter a trade, you will experience one of five outcomes when you close that trade: You will experience a Large Profit You will experience a Small Profit You will “scratch” the trade for Break-even You will experience a Small Loss
