This Otter Be a Great Christmas!
The first time my parents came up to see Hazel, she was just one-week-old and was stuck in the hospital with a bad case of jaundice. The second time my parents came up to see Hazel, she was seven-weeks-old and back in the hospital for hernia surgery. The third time my parents ventured north to see Hazel, it was this weekend and the state of Maine got socked with a pretty ample snow storm. The white stuff is still falling today and is collected on the ground in one- or three-foot drifts. In short, grandparents should have it easier. Luckily, with being snowed in all yesterday, Hazel enjoyed tons of Gramma and Papa time. They may have said they were coming up for my and Megan’s birthdays, but once my 29 candles were blown out, I may as well have been a houseplant. This of course is fine by me, me being Dad John. It may have taken a little punching down upon my inner Young John to step aside here, but my birthday gift copy of Emmett Otter’s Jug-band Christmas certainly helped s

      A Cute Little Baby Otter
I found this today. Tell me this is not the cutest thing you have ever seen. Floating on his back in the water playing with baby toys. It makes you want to run out and get one for yourself. Although it would probably be very difficult to find a baby otter at a pet store and to tell you the truth they probably don’t make the greatest pets.

      Peaks of Otter Camping/Hiking
Jaimie and I went camping at Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia last weekend. We tent camped at site #21 and Hikes around the lake the first evening. It was a beautiful day and was quite crowded around the lodge. The park is very well maintaned and the staff is very friendly. This was the first trip with our new Mountain Hardware Casa 4 tent. Setup time is a about 2 minutes more than the average tent, but worth the effort. The design offers a roomy interior with a spacious gear vestibule. The next morning we woke up and hiked the sharp top mountain trail. We just about had the trail to ourselves on the way up. At the top, we ran into a group that took the bus up. The views are sweet, you can see a complete 360 degrees. It is also worth the trip over to Buzzards Roost. There are some cool climbing rocks and more breath taking views. Here are some pics:

A Paddle Down Otter Creek and Memory Lane
In McClellanville just across Jeremy Creek from the town boat landing is a small tidal creek named Otter Creek.  On a recent kayak trip, I didn’t encounter any otter, but I did see nature at its best while paddling through this area now known as Mouzon’s Bluff. I start my trek as I entered Otter Creek, only 10 feet wide at its mouth.  Snails work their way up blades of marsh grass slowly cleaning them as they slide.  Small minnows and shrimp jump and splash as I quietly wisp through the water.  In the marsh grass near the shore, I catch a glimpse of a tail, of what I am sure is a good sized spot-tail bass, swoosh off into the cloudy depth below.  I continue my journey as the creek widens to about 30 to 40 feet  and bends to the right and then the left. I curiously wonder if I might encounter an alligator, which prefer brackish water but will travel in the creeks on rare occasions. Bounded by marsh grass on both sides; palm

      Baby Otter Swim Lessons
I finally made the call. In addition to the horrible statistics: • Drowning is the #1 cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in Florida. • 75% of victims are ages 12 to 25 months old. • 65% drown in the family pool. • 33% drown in a neighbors’ or relatives’ pool. • For every child that drowns, 4 are hospitalized for near drowning. • 77% were missing less than 5 minutes. I just want my baby to know how to save himself if he falls in the pool……and I want him to enjoy the water as much as I did as a kid. We live in Florida. That is what kids do here. They spend their days in the pools and at the beach. Jax will be 2 in a month and we have taken him in our pool quite frequently, but we are not qualified to teach him survival skills. Lately he has gotten extremely bold and goes onto our first and second pool step by himself. He also thinks it’s funny to run around the pool. I am terrified of this. Not that he will ever be outside alone, but that

      Otter at Berwick upon Tweed
I know it looks more like the Loch Ness monster but it’s the best photo we could get of the otter yesterday evening in Berwick.  I’ve only seen it around the old bridge at high tide.  It moves so quickly it’s hard to get a good photo.
