      Koz: Know Your Ottawa Senators
by Kozkoz81@comcast.net I’m not going to use this space to make any playoff predictions. First of all, I’m too biased; there’s no way I wouldn’t pick the Pens. Secondly, if things go poorly, I don’t want that on my conscience. Instead, I’m going to familiarize you with the Penguins’ opponent, the Ottawa Senators. Since the Pens are going to play anywhere between four and seven games in a row against them, you might as well be informed. The Sens are making their eleventh straight playoff appearance. Last year, was the first time they made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. Of course, they lost to the Ducks, making the Senators the third Canadian team in a row to lose in the Finals. The Senators entered this season as the Eastern Conference favorite and seemed to back that up with a

Ottawa wants to do 'better job' on environment
The report, released Thursday by environment commissioner Ron Thompson, gave the government an "unsatisfactory" grade in nine of 14 areas, including protection of endangered species, Great Lakes cleanup, control of invasive species such as zebra mussels and just keeping its own operations green.Progress has been made in assessing dangerous chemicals, managing pesticide safety and cleaning up contaminated sites, he said. While the report examines the actions of past governments, much of it examines action taken since 2004-2005.

      Review: Andy Swan's Ottawa
I was born and spent my formative years in Ottawa. Not the capital city of Canada but (rather) a small town in central Illinois at the confluence of the Illinois and Fox rivers. Even still, I feel a bit of a connection to Ottawa, Canada despite never having been there. That might have been an unnecessary and long-winded introduction, but I think it ties nicely into my review of Canadian singer-songwriter Andy Swan's latest album Andy Swan's Ottawa. It is a bit country and a bit folk; a little stomping and a lot subdued. At times Andy Swan's Ottawa even recalls a little Jeff Tweedy and old-school Wilco-isms. It is a charming and low-key affair from a great songwriter that no one (yet) seems to know about. His twangy country pop is sentimental and languid but also playful and spirited.

Three Cheers for Ottawa Snow Removal
I am always impressed when I am in Ottawa during the winter at how on the ball (at least compared to Saskatchewan) they are with respect to snow removal.Last night almost a foot of snow fell here. By the time the first flakes hit the ground the trucks were out. The result is that by this morning it seems all the major routes are passable and by this evening even secondary routes seem to be in good shape. In Saskatoon it would take DAYS to dig out of that kind of mess - and I really don't understand why!Sent from my BlackBerry device on the Rogers Wireless Network

Petition and a March on Ottawa
We are currently organizing a march on Ottawa in the name of 9/11 Truth, to take place on 9/11/08. Organized by Canada's many truth chapters, we would arrive from across the country to present this petition:Scientific and eyewitness evidence shows that the 9/11 Commission Report is a fraudulent document and that those behind the report are guilty of covering up what happened on 9/11/2001. Specifically, this evidence shows that the twin towers were brought down by demolition explosives, not by airplanes and fire.It is our view that those covering up what happened were also instrumental in organizing what happened. We believe that elements within the US government murdered thousands of people on 9/11/2001. And made us watch. We demand:(1) That the Government of Canada recall the Canadian ambassador to the United States until the US government launches a new, truly independent investigation into the events of 9/11/2001.(2) That the Government of Canada launch its own investigation in

      A new waterpark for Ottawa
How cool is this? It may be minus 15C and snowy outside, but by 2009 there will be a new 100-acre water park (that’s six times the size of Mont Cascades) just a five-minute drive from here! And this is in addition to the as-yet unnamed new amusement park and water park they’re opening in Smiths Falls in 2010. I love water parks. We make the trek out to Mont Cascades at least once a summer, and I love the idea of one being so close. And in 2009, Tristan and Simon will be just the right age to start enjoying the bigger waterslides. The weather outside may be frightful, but suddenly I’m dreaming of streaming cold water and hot summer days!

      Sveltina a Ottawa

Ottawa Senators: Not a Bad Situation
But a situation nonetheless. It’s been nice to see Martin Gerber step up and play well with Ray Emery recovering from his wrist injury and surgery. Nice because of the fact that Gerber has patiently waited his turn without any whining, sulking or demands to be traded. He is number one NHL netminder material and he has been mature and confident enough to wait his turn, knowing that his chance would come again. Yes, the opportunity has arisen before with Ottawa and he disappointed. Which makes this impressive beginning to the season all the more valuable for Gerber personally and to the Sens as an organization. Emery is back with the club after a reconditioning stint with Binghamton of the American Hockey League. The standard wisdom on a situation like this, is that the Senators will play the loyalty card, dance with the one who brought them etc., etc. It’s pretty good logic. Emery was the go-to goalie in the second half of last season and throughout the playoffs unti

I must remember to take my camera and take some shots to share. So with the clock ticking, I'll share a new finished piece and one in progress First the work in progress. It's another Frida à la Klimt, 24 x 26 in, lots of texture and gold leaf. I took this shot in the house so the colours are a bit off but you get the idea.I've got a couple of new pieces up for auction on eBay. After a flurry of excitement last week, it's oddly quiet on, so you just might find a bargain. This one is called "With All Her Eyes". The large gold leaf halo encircling the angel gives this one a lot of shine! So, it's back to work for me. It's always a challenge to try to guess what might sell at an arts show. Ottawa sells buildings in $1.64B lease-back deal
The federal government has sold nine office properties to a Vancouver-based real-estate company for $1.64 billion, but will lease them back for the next 25 years. Larco Investments Ltd. made the purchase after what the government called "an extensive open, transparent and competitive process" involving properties in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Public Works Minister Michael Fortier says the government sought independent advice from Deutsche Bank before making the sale, concluding it is a fair deal for taxpayers, particularly since markets were favourable at the time.

      Ottawa's sell-off smart move
Federal Public Works Minister Michael Fortier is apparently close to moving ahead on the planned sale of nine federal government buildings in prime locations in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. The total estimated value: $1.4 billion. With real estate markets red hot in most cities, there is every indication these buildings, including Canada Place in Edmonton and the Harry Hays building in Calgary, will fetch top dollar.

      Ottawa’s Climate Change Plan
Owing to the fact that Canada has been suffering from harmful emissions, all efforts to reduce the greenhouse gases have been at play and put a stop to the worsening environment that they have been experiencing. The Kyoto Protocol was conceptualized to help provide limits and control towards the growing issue of greenhouse gases leading to climate changes that have become noticeable and harmful to the territories and the world affected. The clean air we once used to breathe has been slowly diminished. The problem is evident and world leaders are befuddled on what to do to help answer the current issue of greenhouse gases and climate change. To help uphold this alarming issue, a lot of rewards have been laid out to start making changes and reward groups, companies and individuals in putting a stop to the destruction of our ecological habitat. Hopefully it would hold since continued disregard will only prove futile efforts by all. Download latest version of Flash to view video! . Click H

A Lost Respect For Ottawa (VIDEO)
I've never disliked the Ottawa Senators. I use to think they were a great team that deserved to be in the Stanley Cup Finals. But with the events of this series, and the results of last nights game, I have lost all respect. They are clearly showing why they are not ready to be a championship team.First, my anger falls at Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson. In the final seconds of the second period, Alfredsson aimed a slap shot at Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer (included in video below). The only reason I can come up with for this action was an attempt to injure, which means suspension. However, no penalty was called (probably because they were in Ottawa.) But, he was given a warning by the ref.Niedermayer calmly expressed his anger to the press: "You can probably figure out what I thought. I wasn't happy. No need to get hit with a puck at that point. I'm not going to say anything more." The next villian is Ottawa goaltender Ray Emery. First, with less than two minutes remaining in th
