Under the New Labour fright regime, spying on innocent people is a functioning aspect of our lives. The council in Poole, Dorset have taken advantage of the anti-terror laws brought in by the Blair part of this disgraceful government. Poole Borough Council has disclosed that it had legitimately used the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) to spy on a family. This family had be "shopped" to the council by an unknown person. For two weeks the middle-class family was followed by council officials who wanted to establish whether they had given a false address within the catchment area of an oversubscribed school to secure a place for their three-year-old.The investigators were too dim to find this out in less than TWO WEEKS! I think it monstrous that anybody in Poole BC thinks that a

Who was George Orwell, the author of 1984?

Those concrete walls in Baghdad are dwarfed by the 30ft high concrete ones in the 'Holy' Land; which is in pieces, Bantustans. Both builders of those walls claim to be democracies and that the walls are for Security. Both builders of those walls exhibit the schizophrenic discipline of thinking two contradictory truths at the same time. Coined by Orwell as doublethink, the Ministry of Peace wages war, the Ministry of Truth fabricates lies and the Ministry of Love tortures and kills any it deems threatening. Most threatening for Big Brother are those with independent thought. In 2007, Naomi Klein, in her book The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism, argued that at the height of the 2003-07 economic boom, the military industrial complex was driving Israel's tremendous eco
In 1984, the Orwellian version of the future depicts a world under the governmental control of ‘Big Brother’. Privacy doesn’t exist and cameras everywhere, record every aspect of life. Some would say that, Mr Orwell wasn’t far off the mark. In the UK these days CC TV cameras seem to adorn every street corner and [...]

#10 - TRAMPLED UPON
“Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating? It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias that the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery and torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow [...]

The final days of John Dowland , the Death of Eric Blair (George Orwell)
One of the most famous British composers from the Age of Shakespeare was the lutenist and songwriter John Dowland. His life is documented rather well compared to many of his contemporaries, however much about him remains a mystery.
Some Describe Downland as “A [...]
The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) reports on a disturbing program of political indoctrination at the University of Delaware. To highlight a few parts of their report:
The University of Delaware subjects students in its residence halls to a shocking program of ideological reeducation that is referred to in the university’s own materials as a “treatment” for students’ incorrect attitudes and beliefs. The Orwellian program requires the approximately 7,000 students in Delaware’s residence halls to adopt highly specific university-approved views on issues ranging from politics to race, sexuality, sociology, moral philosophy, and environmentalism. The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is calling for the total dismantling of the program, which is a flagrant violation of students’ rights to freedom of conscience and freedom from compelled speech.
“The University of Delaware’s residence life education program is a grave intrusion into st
A few weeks ago, we were watching Jeopardy, and one of the questions was about George Orwell's 1984. I said, "I really should read that one of these days." A few days later, we were at a tag sale and Beth spotted a paperback of the book for a buck. So she bought it for me. Now I've read it, finally, quite a lot of years after I should have done. I had read Animal Farm a long time ago, but I had just never gotten around to reading 1984. Now I'm sad that I let it wait for so long.So I provided one of my little capsule reviews to the book store on Wednesday. But since the blog allows me to spend as many words as I want, I'm going to publish a somewhat longer review here:Stylistically and structurally, Orwell's 1984 is a masterpiece. In addition, it is a triumph of imagination. Orwell imagined a world so thoroughly as to make it seem less a fictional setting than an alternate reality. His book, while fairly short, is as complete as could be hoped for. The novel is brutal, unpleasant,
technology vs orwellian control.........this resonates in a whole new way at this moment in America legislation passing on invasive measures yet again....1984 Apple Macintosh commercial>and still the counterculture becomes cartoons spun against itself...nothing new here...just more sophisticated like so much else...Spock vs. Hippie - 60's CommercialsDali Pub Lanvinand it as if things don't have the same meaning when seen a certain way......what is semiotics if not the bastion of advertising and spin? how does the artist stand in the face of these arguably greater skill sets of metaphor, subtext and theme?is advertising the new avante garde?it is a collective that has now absorbed happenings, performance art, new media, design, locative media and all else with a clean precision.....and with clarity and a sense of the ubiquitous that drops the audience's guard...[tagname]

“I'm fat, but I'm thin inside. Has it ever struck you that there's a thin man inside every fat man, just as they say there's a statue inside every block of stone?”

“The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one's real and one's declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish squirting ink.”

“Political language ... is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.”
