      Russian Orthodox Easter Customs
Easter is the predominant springtime feast celebrated by the Russian Orthodox. For religious Russians, the entire Lenten Season, referred to as the Quadragesima, has a markedly different feel than normal, day-to-day life. Historically, all theatre and music performances were banned during Lent, as they were considered distraction from the Lenten proscription to reflect and repent. Today, these public restrictions have lessened, although many individuals still maintain a strict adherence to the requirements of Lent, including not eating meat, eggs or other animal products during the 40 day "fast".Holy week, beginning with Palm Sunday, is a time of great activity in Russian homes, including spring cleaning and baking Easter bread. On Holy Thursday, Russians paint their Easter eggs using thei

      Orthodox Holy Week
It is Holy Week in the Orthodox Church, so I will not be posting again until after we celebrate Pascha, which is the Eastern Orthodox equivalent to "Easter." During this week, Orthodox Christians around the world will gather for services at their parishes each night of the week. We will be transported to the days of Christ's passion, the crucifixion, His burial, and ultimately, in the most

      Orthodox Lent
Great Lent began today for Orthodox Christians. It's a six-week period spent preparing ourselves for Pascha through fasting, prayer, and giving alms. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, fasting during Great Lent requires much more than giving up sweets for forty days. In fact, we began preparing for lent a week ago when we stopped eating meat, and enjoyed eating dairy products until yesterday's

      Orthodox Christianity 101
Here's a great series produced by Father Michael Courey from St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church in Redondo Beach, California. His presentation is based on notes from The Orthodox Church by Timothy Ware. In spite of some choppy editing in the below presentations, Father Michael does a great job, I think, of explaining the history, Tradition, practices, and beliefs of The Orthodox Church.

URGENT: Ukranian Baby Seeks Orthodox Parents
Orthodox missionary John Hogg has recently returned from a trip to the Ukraine where he became acquainted with a 15-month old little boy named Vladik, who lives in an orphanage for children under the age of four. He does have some special medical needs that an adoptive family in the U.S. could easily provide (it's way too costly to afford medication for hemophilia on Ukranian wages). I mean,

It was late December 2006 when I wrote this (has it really been over a year since final adoption?). In the Orthodox Church, newborns are presented at the altar during a "40 day" service. It was at about 40 days that my priest guided me in presenting my new child to the church. Below is the account of that day as I recalled it on what was ChristianForums.com (it has since changed). Ultra-Orthodox Jews torch crematorium
Two years ago, the "Aley Shalehet" crematorium opened in Israel. This got Orthodox Jews burning mad, so to speak, since cremation is strictly verboten according to Orthodox Jewish law. Because of this, the crematorium had to keep its location secret to prevent ultra-Orthodox fanatics from showing up and, what else, burning the place down (potential customers were provided only with a telephone contact number), but last Wednesday the location was revealed in a religious newspaper and only hours later, the whole facility went up in flames: Israeli Internet news sites quoted fire brigade officials as saying signs of forced entry were found at the facility in central Israel, raising suspicions the evening blaze was set deliberately. ... Photos on the news sites showed serious damage to the crematorium, situated in a rural community. Other photos taken earlier at the site, and published in an ultra-Orthodox newspaper that revealed its location, showed members of a religious burial organiza

Ultra Orthodox are seeking West Bank real estate
MODIIN ILLIT, West Bank — This ultra-religious city became the largest Jewish settlement in the West Bank this year, but visitors are hard-pressed to find the orange solidarity ribbons that became standard dress among settlers since Israel's uprooting of the Gaza settlements two years ago. The ultra-Orthodox and mainline settlers are both strictly religious but have different reasons for colonizing the West Bank.

Theological war between the Egyptian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church
The Roman Catholic Church is one which started the fight more publicly when It announced that it was only righteous church of Jesus on the earth that it owns the keys of redemption ,well the Egyptian Orthodox Church had to fire back  Pope Shounda in his lesson last Wednesday denied that Saint Peter was the Jesus Original disciples and the spokesperson of the apostles  which made the Catholics in Egypt very angry from Pope Shounda Pope Shounda is building his assumption on the fact that there is nothing in the Bible says that Saint Peter went to Rome , but on the other hand the Catholics say also the other 11 apostles were not mentioned either in the Bible so why the Pope of Alexandria puts ST.Peter in his mind ?? And that on the same way there was no proof that St.Mark did not come to Egypt either !! of course the Catholics did not leave the opportunity without underestimating St.Mark As you see this is just another theological war between the Coptic Orthodox churc

      Orthodox Presbyterian Church
I recently made my first visit to the local Orthodox Presbyterian Church for their evening service. This was quite a new experience, since the church that I have attended for the past 5 years is much more laid back to say the least. Heavily structured and quite formal is probably the best description for this church. This is not necessarily a bad thing either; for me however, it was a major shock to the system. The service started out with a hymn, and followed with a recitation about the ten commandments. It was a group confessions of each of the commandments in a generic way that no one can really deny. This was probably one of my favorite parts. I liked how they dealt with sin as the first issue. I think a big reason for spiritual immaturity and immorality among Christians is simply due to a failure to address sin as a church. You think this would be obvious being that we are all sinners, but it feels like this issue is kind of pushed to the side.A recitiation of the Nicene Creed was

Bridging gaps between mystics and orthodox
The deeper truths about which mystics of all ages talk, are often misunderstood by the general mass. As mystics have a different kind of understanding of reality, they often resort to paradox. Or rather, when they speak about the inner reality, it seems paradoxical to the orthodox mind who can't think 'out of the box'. But if you see closely, you will realize they both are speaking the same.In mystical discourse its a recurring theme that all the enlightened personalities at different ages, sometime called Messengers of God or Prophets are basically the manifestation of the SAME ESSENCE. In that line the mystics will say what is Awakening of Abraham is the same as Christ Consciousness, is the same as Buddha Nature, is the same as Krishna Consciousness, is same as the Light of Muhammad (Nur Muhammad). There is no difference, no distinction in the core. Different time and culture needed different terminology to point the same. Now for an orthodox religious person this can sound very h

      Orthodox Reconciliation with the Jews
:: ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS want to change anti-semitic texts, says Arutz Sheva The CReDO News reports: - It is high time to start the dialogue between Orthodox Christianity and Judaism. In light of rising anti-Semitism and other manifestations of nationalism in Russia, our church has to respond to this ugly phenomena and review some of the aspects of its relations with Jews and Judaism, said Rev. Ioann Sviridov, editor-in-chief of the Russian Christian radio-station Sophia.- Sadly, there are some Orthodox Christians who propagate disgusting anti-Semitism under the banner of Orthodoxy, which is incompatible with Christianity, said Rev. Innokenty Pavlov, professor of theology at Moscow's Biblical Theological Institute. The dozen Orthodox priests who signed the declaration - some in open defiance of directives from church leadership - represent five different Orthodox churches, including the Russian, Greek, Ukrainian, Georgian and Ecumenical Orthodox Churches, says CReDO.ruREFLECTION This

Sound Doctrine & Orthodox Christians - Back to Basics...
THERE IS, I BELIEVE, A BASIC INGREDIENT which is largely lacking in Christianity today, and the lack of it is the source of most of our problems... It is my absolute conviction that most of us miss this most obvious and most repeated message, even while laying great emphasis on "sound doctrine." Well, I would like to ask you, "What is sound doctrine?" We have long discussions on the Second Coming, on the Atoning Work of Christ, on the Church, the Holy Spirit, etc., etc. But what about love and humility and brokenness? These usually go into a separate category, but I want to tell you that if your doctrine does not include love and humility and brokenness, then your doctrine is not sound. There are thousands, even millions, of people who claim to be "orthodox Christians" because they cling to a certain set of beliefs in accord with the Bible. They are aware that they do not practice much humility, but they do not think that makes them any les
