Madonna’s film about orphans to air on Sundance
Madonna’s awakening to the crisis in Malawi — an impoverished African nation where one million children are orphaned by AIDS — had many consequences. She adopted one of those orphans, her 3-year-old son David. She is building a school there.  And she has told Malawi’s harrowing story in her documentary, “I Am Because We Are.” With [...]

      Picnicface - Orphans
Orphans are in a class of their own. They lack parents, money, and most of all general acceptance from society. But these setbacks don’t even compare to getting mauled by haters. Especially when the hater is irrational.

Travel for a Great Cause - Friends of Orphans: Nicaragua
Often people take trips to see new worlds, seek adventure, search for relief from stress, or just to get away. To do this, they often visit countries that are poor, devasted, or suffering. Yet where they "vacation", they avoid that situation either on purpose or most likely without any knowledge at all that those situations even exist.Well to remedy that, I the travel beggar, will do my best to pr

Activists make last-ditch effort to save orphans from Israeli state terror
From The Palestinian Information Center : Palestinian leaders and Christian peace activists as well as representatives of human rights organizations operating in the occupied Palestinian territories on Thursday made an impassioned appeal to "all men and women of conscience all over the world" to help stop Israeli army plans to close down and take over several orphanages and boarding schools sheltering thousands of orphans and impoverished students. Many of the orphans' parents had been killed by the Israeli army and paramilitary Jewish terrorists, also known as "settlers." The appeal was made during a press conference at the main Girl Orphanage in downtown Hebron. The Israeli army has repeatedly raided the orphanages, boarding schools and affiliated institutions, vandalizing pr

Scenes from a Film Symposium: Orphans 6
The first several slides would suggest that the participants in the Orphan Film Symposium, March 26-29, 2008 at NYU, were more interested in food and drink than films, but most of the images that follow reveal their true passion. As my memory of the symposium presentations is still fresh, I'll soon follow up with a couple of related posts.Today, however, is my day for naps, pizza, and college basketball. As a sophisticated flâneuse, I sometimes need a time-out.T.O., baby! Orphan Film Symposium: Moving Orphans, Itinerant Filmmakers, and Pancho Villa
Last night at the Orphan Film Symposium, we gathered for dinner inside the historic Judson Memorial Church on Washington Square South. Making the most of the "on location" feel for the symposium, most of the events take place in and around Washington Square Park.Ever since it was announced that the symposium was moving to New York, some people worried that the southern grit flair established in South Carolina for so long would be lost in translation. I worried about this myself, but on balance, just after the opening couple of days, I don't think there's anything to worry about now. Wednesday night's tribute to the late Helen Hill, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, and with it, the presence of family and friends from South Carolina, made an effective and moving transition for the sympo

      Help orphans
Some 570,000 Chinese children are orphans. 80% of them live in the countryside - in poor, underdeveloped regions where there is no infrastructure to help them. Almost one-third of all orphans are in urgent need of help but do not receive any support. (the orphan brother and sister) (bedroom & living room) (rigth: the orphan and his bed)The Love-in-Action Foundation has provided financial support to almost 600 orphans since 2002. In order to boost help for orphans, Love-in-Action and a group of volunteers began working on “Action e 10,000″ this spring - the first internet-based help project for Chinese orphans. Its aim is to mobilize internet users for the support of 10,000 orphans in China’s rural areas.(left: a kid with new gift) (right: kids are ready for gifts)The “Action

      Duplessis Orphans
In a scheme that boggles a person's mind, fifty years ago in Canada, Quebec Minister Maurice Duplesiss entered into a pact with the Catholic Church to defraud the government by relabeling children left in orphanages by unwed mothers as psychotic or mentally deficient to gain greater funding. In the demented plan orphanages were also relabeled as insane asylums and run that way. When the asylums were closed in the 1990's, the profit scheme came to light and a scandal erupted. The survivors began to tell about the horrors of imprisonment from childhood---the profound abuse, treatment as slave labor, electro-shock treatments, sexual abuse, physical tortures, straitjackets, and medical experiments.Confronted with the evidence the government chose to trivialize the impact and refused to punish

Orphans first Christmas together with Smart PipS!
It was past 8pm when me and my sister Erica arrived at Tagum and immediately went to a small Orphanage which has only 21 orphans being sheltered by few of the PM sisters. I actually forgot the name of that Orphanage. The party has already started at around 7pm, and were anticipated and sponsored by Smart Wireless employees in Tagum Branch which my sister is connected with and that is also the reason why I was there, gate crashing..hehhe..I've seen how those kids were so blissful, reaching their innermost zenith of emotion when they joined different games, merrily singing Christmas songs, eating mouth watering foodstuff prepared by the Smart employees and who wouldn't like receiving gifts? Of course those 21 orphans were so happy and reached the verge of happiness and gladness when they got each one of them their presents. It really feels so heartwarming and undeniably gratifying when you see those children shows a bright smile on their face not thinking about their gloomy and moros

You own your business. You the owner are really strong in some areas. You may have a knack for sales or are very creative in designing products or services. These may be the reason you saw the need and got into the business in the first place. Yet you the owner may be weak in some other areas. You never got trained there. You do not have much experience. You may not get marketing or understand information technology. It is a bit of magic or a black box to you. This can play out in operating expenses in several ways not to your benefit: · You have your pets. You love to spend money there when you can. You feel very rosy about any projects that come up here. It is like someone who goes out and buys a neat new tool from the hardware store, that they may only use once a year and is way beyond what they needed. You may for example, be very visionary and very enamored about information technology. You see the power of the Internet. You pour a lot of money into it. You spend more than you

Janan Salam is behind in her studies, but the 14-year-old hopes to finish fifth grade soon. The past four years have brought many obstacles to her education: the murder of her father by Sunni insurgents; fighting around her family home in Diyala that made it too dangerous to leave the house; and her family's move south to Sadr City, where until recently it also was too dangerous to be on the streets.(Photo by James Palmer)Now, after a four-year break, she is back in school full time.Janan is one of 650 students enrolled in the newly opened Khafal Al-Yuteem primary school. The two-story cement and brick building sits deep in the heart of Sadr City, one of Baghdad's poorest neighborhoods, crammed with an estimated 2 million people.Built specifically for Shiite children who have lost one or both parents, the school is the first of its kind to be financed by the country's education ministry under Iraq's new government. This from the Newhouse News Service.

At nearly 33 Years Old, I Would Be Dead Right Now, and My Kids Would Be Orphans
One of my very good friends, Chris, and his lovely wife Jenn are traveling to Swaziland at the end of May to volunteer a month of their time, and as many supplies as they can muster to the small town of Manzini. Traveling to Africa is my biggest dream and I’m so proud of Jenn and Chris for taking this huge leap and helping their fellow man. One day, when my kids are older, I plan on doing this very thing. In Chris’ words: As you may, or may not know, Jenn and I are traveling to Swaziland, Africa at the end of the month to volunteer in a hospital in the small town of Manzini for a month. What prompted this??… I’m trying to off-set my carbon-credits with good-Karma-juju credits, thereby allowing me to continue my current global-carbon-polluting ways. Seriously - I have recently been in contact via email with someone at the hospital, as well as someone at an orphanage nearby. And they are in need of supplies. "BlackBerry Orphans" are whiny brats
I just read this interesting article in The Wall Street Journal about so-called BlackBerry orphans. As hand-held email devices proliferate, they are having an unexpected impact on family dynamics: Parents and their children are swapping roles. Like a bunch of teenagers, some parents are routinely lying to their kids, sneaking around the house to covertly check their emails and disobeying house rules established to minimize compulsive typing. The refusal of parents to follow a few simple rules is pushing some children to the brink. They are fearful that parents will be distracted by emails while driving, concerned about Mom and Dad's shortening attention spans and exasperated by their parents' obsession with their gadgets. *** The household tension comes as gadgets like BlackBerrys and Treos -- once primarily tools for investment bankers and lawyers -- have entered the pantheon of devices, including the TV, the personal computer and the cellphone, that have forcefully inserted the

      WorldWide Orphans Foundation Gift Registry
I received a postcard this week from Dr Jane Aronson's ("The Orphan Doctor") WorldWide Orphans Foundation about their new "gift" registry and I thought it was a terrific idea. You have the chance to bid on critically needed equipment, services, and supplies for children living in Ethiopia, Vietnam, Bulgaria, and all over the world. This is not an adoption charity. The foundation's focus is on children without families who remain in their birth countries. It is a way to "give back" to children just like our own children who in great need of just about everything. The bid prices range from $20,000 to $100. It's understandable that we APs may want to support causes more related to our own children's birth countries, and we should certainly do that. But I think it's also important to think more globally about children's issues and that is why organizations like WWO are so important.WWO First' Annual Gift Registry -- Surely there is something there we can all "bid" on.Share the link an
