After reeling from the shock of construction sites along Orchard St. just south of E. Walking the block of Orchard St. south of E. Houston early this afternoon, I started experiencing not so much the anticipation of discovery as the anxiety of place. The buildings that I thought were along in here were no longer here, and in their stead were some new buildings and construction sites of buildings yet to come. I'm having a hard time remembering what the old places looked like, and I

The first to show was the Williams Pear. Then the Braeburn Applefollowed by the Kidds Orange AppleThe Morello Cherry And finally the Red Fallstaff Apple. All the rest of the trees are now into leaf and well worth a visit. One of the things on the 'to do' list, is to make an information board so that visitors can tell what type of fruit grows on each tree. Apple Orchard in Spring Impressionist PaintingAbout This Painting: It seems I've stumbled into a new series of paintings! I love going to the orchard to pick fruit, starting with strawberries in June, blueberries in July, (also raspberries and gooseberries) August is for peaches, September apples and pears, and finally pumpkins in October. I've been doing this for years and years and I've accumulated quite a few photos of the orchard, which is what I'm working from at the moment. But as soon as the weather gets warmer I'll be packing up my paints and heading there for some plein air painting. I think the new series will be called Orchards and Vineyards, as there are some beautiful vineyards I can go to also. We'll see where this goes because I have it in the back of my mind to perhaps do s

Have you seen Fiona Xie running in bikini in Orchard Road, the most crowded place in Singapore? She was filming the show "The Champion" (任我遨游), an idol drama by Mediacorp. It was telecast in 2004. The show stars Taiwanese idol Toro, Yan Xingshu, Qi Yuwu, Julian Hee, Jeanette Aw, Felicia Chin, Fiona Xie and Joyce Zhao, all young actors and actresses. This show also marked Jesseca Liu's acting debut. It received one of the highest viewership rate during the telecast of the show, especially since there were a few semi-nude scenes such as Qi Yuwu stripping on-screen and Fiona Xie and other members of the Flying Fish running down Orchard Road in their bikinis. The series mainly dealt with the trials and travails of a Singaporean swimming team, the Flying Fish (飞鱼队, which could be a

Just for the record, shopping challenges the brain and contributes to positive self image. That is why theory have shown that women tend to live longer than men: they shop more.Whether it's for clothes or groceries, shopping is a simple way to summarise what's good for the brain. It combines three elements that allow the brain to function better: staying physically active, challenging the brain and maintaining a positive self-image.See, women go to the mall, and they have to walk around a lot, oftentimes carrying heavy bags. Secondly, they have to make a lot of decisions: 'I have to compare this price with that . . . will this particular piece fit in my home?' blah blah blah. When they're all done, they really feel good about themselves, like they've accomplished something. On the other hand, men are at home sitting in front of the TV trying to help (their football team) along, and that doesn't do any of the three. I don't know about you whether to believe it or not. Hello, this

I was completely overwhelmed by my attempt to panic and kiss at the same time. I had forgotten his name. Fortunately when we joined the crowd later on (about an hour later?), a gal who obviously knew him well bounded up, shouting "Neil! What's up?", pointedly taking notice of our melded hands. I was a bit flustered trying to take in her arched eyebrows while simultaneously attempting to form a new neural pathway (labelled Neil) through sheer force of will.He introduced me to his friend Julie, who pointedly asked if I was his girlfriend. Now, I may have been the shy, socially challenged type, but her tone of voice and body language simply radiated annoyance. An outsider? Nabbing the hottest bachelor in the area? She was not impressed. His response placated her somewhat though."Not sure yet," he replied casually, with a smile and a

We danced. Together. In a group. Together again. I don’t know what music was playing, or how many dances we danced before he took me aside.“I have something to show you...,” he whispered.I'll admit to being a bit hesitant at this point. Once the excitement of doing something I'd never done or even dreamed of doing had died down, I was left feeling a little ashamed. As prudish as it sounds, I felt like a hussy! What I neglected to realize of course is that hussies don't blush, and I'd spent so much of that night doing so that my cheeks literally ached. He took me by the hand and lead me away from the crowded thrum-thrum-thrumming of the dance. The music faded as we walked, and the quietude of the late summer evening descended upon us like a gift. He lead me to a small hill overlooking

Really, it could be so much better organized in there. I have these incredibly vivid memories, startling in the richness of their detail, that have absolutely no relevance to my life whatsoever. Zilch.I’m not certain what happened after Neil’s interest in kissing me was rewarded with an answer of “Not yet.” I don’t remember the look on his face. Though that may be because I was to embarrassed to look at it. I don’t remember what his immediate response was.Somehow, we ended up sitting next together under an apple tree. There was no rustle of leaves, because they were freshly fallen, still suffused with a life slowly ebbing away from them. It was dusk, and the sun no longer pierced through the boughs above us. Dark seemed to be falling so very quickly. I’d lost an hour or two
It seemed like a great idea. A couple of friends from work with boys the same age, getting together for an afternoon of apple-picking. We found a date that worked for everyone, the weather forecast called for sunshine and mild temperatures. The only problem? No apples. Thank goodness somebody thought to call ahead the day before we went! I guess with the gorgeous weather we’ve been having, all the pick-yer-own orchards have been picked clean. After checking with a handful of places, we decided to try Cannamore Orchards because not only did they have some pre-picked apples available, but they advertised a bunch of fun activities for families.
And that’s how we discovered another of Ottawa’s hidden treasures: Cannamore Orchard.
It’s about a 40 minute drive south-east of the city. Personally, I’d never heard of it, but then, we’d always done our picking at Kilmarnock Orchards. While Kilmarnock is gorgeous, Cannamore offers some great stuff fo

Yet, even though I was caught up in a severe case of social awkwardness, I managed to spare some attention for sight. The play of light through the canopy of the fruit trees surrounding us was almost mesmerizing. Here a shadow, there a rapidly shifting patch of sun. All with that muted green glow of backlit leaves. Fall was settling in slowly there, a gradual encroachment rather than the rapid rush I was used to back home. For the most part we were enveloped in cool greenness, but our feet, carefully placed to avoid the slimy squish of fallen fruit, kicked up showers of yellow and brown. It’s lucky for Neil I was a little smitten with him by that time, or he would have had a harm time catching my attention.I managed to ask questions about the orchard and what sort of work he’d done there in the

It’s a fuzzy picture, taken as we were driving (oh so slowly) away. I don’t remember much else about the trip. Not the music we listened to, or the conversations we must have had. It was a five hour drive (and Jo’s speeding was balanced out by the time it took to receive the ticket), and however I poke and prod at my memory, I can’t conjure up those hours. We were late arriving to the orchard. Most of our church congregation had finished lunch and started drifting off towards the dense cluster of fruit trees, picking gear in tow. Jo grabbed a quick lunch while I allowed my aversion to mayonnaise to deter me. My poor starved self suffered little over this thoug

Probably the most easily recognizable part of Singapore, this famous stretch of shopping malls and entertainment centers was, in the 1800s, an area for nutmeg and pepper plantations and fruit orchards, hence, the name Orchard Road.Orchard Road is a one-way street. It starts at the intersection with Orange Grove Road which is the location of the Orchard Hotel, near the Singapore Botanic Gardens. It then stretches southeast across the Scotts Road/Paterson Hill intersection, Orchard MRT Station, Bideford Road, Somerset MRT Station, Central Expressway (CTE), Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station and ends at the intersection with Handy Road (just before Prinsep Street), where it becomes Bras Basah Road.Orchard Road contains numerous upmarket restaurants, coffee chains, cafes, nughtclubs, and hotels. Yesterday morning, the whole family set to go to Bentong to visit SIL BF family’s durian orchard.
This is the first time in my life I stepped into a durian orchard. The orchard was on a 3 acres hill, needed a little uphill walk. There are so many nice species, and I was told the good ones are rare and they normally reserve for family instead of selling.
When arrived, we saw many collected durians piled up on the ground already. SIL BF’s uncle helped us to open all the durians as we ate on the spot. While we were eating, there were more durians dropped from surrounding areas. Children went out to collect them, and we ate immediately. A very fun experience!

We had so much of good species to eat, include Musang (猫山), Udang Merah (红虾), Bamboo/Kaki Buluh (竹脚), etc. To them, 88 or D24 are low grades of all already, though I still quite like them. Musang is the highest grade, and is very rare. There was on
As record labels scramble to output only the highest possible earners, an investment bank in Britain is swooping-in to finance successful bands who've lost their mojo. Ingenious Media PLC realizes labels cannot afford to waste efforts on older, niche bands, and that's why they've found opportunity to finance UB40, Peter Gabriel, Prodigy and Travis. The primary issue is that while the bands still draw a formative amount of attention to sell lots, they've got nothing new or interesting to offer by way of sound recording, at least according to the fans. On a grand scale, bands like these do not sell albums well. Ingenious Media's strategy is to fund proportionally and market the albums to the appropriate niche.(Link)Ecast announced a partnership on Thursday with indie music distributor, The Orchard, to license songs for playback to over 10,000 of its bar-havened, on-demand digital jukeboxes.(Link)
This morning I was knee-deep in grass and nettles picking red currants from the bushes at the end of the orchard. My Czech friends suggest I get a pair of goats or a few sheep to keep the grass down, but that all seems a little too much responsibility to me – for starters I would need to ensure a supply of water and then I would need to check that the fence is without holes. All too much work. The orchard doesn't entirely belong to us, part of it we rent and part - well I am not sure what to make of it - the land registry map bears so little resemblance to what is on the ground and the fence is there and has been for years with everyone respecting it.The orchard is a joy. It is old and full of hidden treasures, a large cherry tree of great height, apple trees of summer and winter varieties, plum trees with lovely sweet small fruit and now red currants. We share the fruit with the wildlife of the area – wasps of course, but other larger beasts as well. Today I found a defined deer t

I had to paint! This is a little cherry orchard deep in the Dordogne countryside. I had gone for a sketching walk with Boy, the young son of one of my dearest friends. We had spent about an hour drawing a magnificent view and then moved on. Boy was all painted out so, while I absorbed this little lane, he ran about in the cherry orchard “scrumping” cherries, which he shared with me. It had rained recently. The earth was warm and the smell of wet clay mingled with the scents of clary sage and thyme that were exploding into the air as Boy’s busy feet scrambled over the stony herb encrusted ground. I wonder if one day, when I am nearing eighty and Boy is in his late thirties, whether the taste of cherries and the smell of wild thyme will invoke this moment. 85 pounds (UK) 170 dollars (USA) and 126 euros (Europe). There has been plenty of discussion on the issue of the fundamentals of why housing prices in Orange County are indeed, not rational. One of the most common metrics cited by those with or without a basic economics background is the rent versus buy ‘price’ (monthly payment). These prices are the net output of a large number of variables, including (very importantly) what amount can be mortgaged, as IrvineRenter has explained in previous posts. I would like to take an opportunity to focus on the supply side of the equation, to help frame the discussions. Some of this is for statistical consideration, and some is simply to discuss the housing product and this blog community’s view of the current and future marketplace offerings.
One of the commonly-recited phrases heard in defense of high housing prices, especially in Orange County, is “they aren’t making any more land.” There are a number of technical arguments to refute the idea that (even if
Mia's preschool class had a field trip to the zoo yesterday. It was a great time for all the kids and parents. The rain held off until after we were in our van on the way home. The medicine the doctor prescribed Mia is working miracles. She ran all day, climbed up the rope ladder, and never limped once. Jess said she limped a little first thing this morning, but after the medicine she was fine. I spent the entire day in bed recovering from the day walking yesterday. Obviously the doctor still has to work on my medicine. The zoo was so much fun. Mia got to feed a giraffe, goats, sheep, and a reindeer. I tried to get a picture of her feeding the reindeer, but the camera flashed just a moment too slow, so instead I got this amazing picture of her joy. I love this picture. In November, residents in Orchard City, Colo., voted resoundingly to end a ban on alcohol sales in the town, located 170 miles west of Denver. It was the last completely dry town in Colorado.
The vote authorizes the town to issue licenses to sell alcohol to restaurants and liquor stores, but not to bars or taverns. The Orchard City Board of Trustees must establish rules for alcohol sales, but since no one has applied for a liquor license the town leaders are not exactly feeling pressured to push forward with drawing up the regulations.
It may take sometime before the thirst of the town's 3,000 residents is quenched.
