Ricy Ponting insists that this series is being played in the best possible spirit, but whether he still thinks so, after another day of verbal exchanges and even physical contact, is anybody's guess. Chris Broad, the match referee, might well have to step in during the course of the match. In the course of Gautam Gambhir's six-and-a-half hour innings, he exchanged words with Shane Watson and Sim

The first Saturday of College Football has come upon us, here's some thoughts on the day that was...LSU too domintantLSU showed the difference between Top 10 FBS and Top 10 FCS teams. App St. could be a middle tier FBS team, but LSU's speed and dominance up front was just too much for the Mountaineers. In the trenches is where it all starts, LSU's D-Line was dominant and too demanding; and their o
Head Ball Coach has a defense. South Carolina made a statement in their opener. In beating NC State 34-0, they gave up only 49 passing yards and forced 4 turnovers. But we knew SC’s defense was good. If the 4 Gamecock turnovers and offensive hiccups were just products of first game jitters, this Spurrier team could be for real—which means they finish 4th in the SEC East. The Runaround. Miam

I've collected the Opening Day (or close enough) futures odds for each MLB team to win the World Series. I figured these will be fun to look back on when the Indians have their parade about seven months from now. Odds were taken from Sportsbook, VIP, Bodog, 5Dimes, and Carib.Apparently there is a clear hierarchy in the American League- it's the Yankees, Red Sox, and Tigers, and then everyone else. The gap between the Indians and Tigers amuses me to no end. VIP has Detroit at 4.75:1, and Cleveland at 16:1. This is an improvement, as the Indians were 18:1 a few weeks ago. I guess it really comes down to the fact that the Tigers have Pudge batting 8th; I really think that's going to make the difference in the division this year. That, and their superior bullpen. Denny Bautista, Jason

There was a time the opening day of baseball season was a big deal to me. Over the years I've paid less and less attention to baseball. It's gotten to the point where last year I didn't watch a single inning of the World Series. I couldn't care less about it.Baseball lost me with the last strike and I've not returned. Seeing frauds such as Barry Bonds break sacred baseball records like Hank Aaron's doesn't help matters.
No, they did not win. But it did go 10 innings, and our new guy from Japan made a game tying home run in the bottom of the 9th, oregato buddy! No, they didn't win, but it is baseball season again, another winter is over (maybe), and we are all still here. Life is good. It is. Anytime you can watch baseball in Wrigley Field, it's good. No matter what else may be going on, if you're at Wrigley Field, it can't be all bad. Hence the hat.
Johan Santana was brilliant in his first game as a Met, pitching seven innings while striking out eight, in a Mets 7-2 win over the Florida Marlins on Opening Day. Mets fans like me, of course, had dreams of the Mets' first-ever perfect no-hitter, as Santana retired the first nine batters he faced. Of course, it didn't happen — and it may never happen — but the Mets were definitely sharp in their first game of the season. Click here for a full recap from ESPN.
Well, the Orioles are up 2-0 in the second inning, and although it is not freezing, it's not warm either. I'm jammed in a seat, uncomfortable and there are people next to me wondering if I am sane for bringing my laptop to the game and trying to get my own personal (actual) work done & blog a little.I have to do what I have to do.Some thoughts:* The crowd. I have never seen Camden Yards as empty as is now for Opening Day. There cannot be more than 33-35,000 people here and there are large sections of the stadium (we are talking about rows upon rows) empty. It's shocking and in a way tragic as to how things have transpired the last few years. Let us hope we are not going down the road of a Pittsburgh. If that's one thing that's positive, the fans in attendance are lively.* Aubrey Huff. Did
Hello readers! So sorry about the delay for a new post! I have had some recent computer problems, but finally got a half-decent laptop, so I’m back in business. Thank you for being patient, if there are any of you out there!Last night marked the Opening Night of the 2008 Major League Baseball season and needless to say, it jump started in good fashion. The Washington Nationals’ new ballpark was christened with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth for a Nats win. Most clubs open up their seasons today or tomorrow, including our beloved Mets, down in Florida against the Marlins. I am sure we all look forward to a great and exciting season ahead of us. Don’t forget to keep up with my pre-season predictions! So there are a few things I would like to touch on in this post. At Camden Yards now, catching opening day here with Beatlefanatic, and her friend Amanda.Well, I'll have a full writeup of FanFest when I have more than five minutes to myself this week. Between dealing with my lovely girlfriend, baseball, more baseball, plus my media commitments, I have not had much time to blog.I am little sad but at the same time rejoicing the release of Jay Gibbons. Like I have said over and over, he was always a nice guy when I talked to him; however, if you seemingly lose all talent and everything else, you don't deserve to have a job.He could not take a up roster spot that a better, more versatile guy could not have held; alas, he got sent on his way.I hope the guy the best of luck, but I think his days may be numbered as an MLB player unless he can latch on with so
Mike Pelfrey won the 5th starter spot; Brady Clark, Raul Casanova, Angel Pagan and Joe Smith are in; Fernando Tatis and Brian Flores were sent to New Orleans, Moises Alou, El Duque and Ramon Castro will start the season on the DL.

The Seattle Mariners are set to introduce some new items at the stadium when they open the season at Safeco today. One of the brand new concession items will be a creepy re-imagining of the classic ballpark frank -- one in which the actual 'wiener' will instead be fish. The Sea Dog, as it has been dubbed, is a 10-inch filet of cod on a hot dog roll.I'm not down with the codpiece. But there are some other new food choices available this year such as ...cedar-planked salmon, catfish and fries, hand-dipped caramel popcorn, foot-long bratwursts, Auntie Anne's pretzels, French dip sandwiches and prime rib nachos.Related:The wait's over -- it's Opening Day [seattlepi.com]

As we usher in a new baseball season, I thought I'd start off my regular Mets thoughts with a series of quotes from the incomparable Ralph Kiner, the Mets' longtime broadcaster. Ralph is known well for his butchering of just about, well, anything he ever said. These are some of his best lines ever, as compiled by the Baseball Almanac. Here's to another great season of Mets baseball — and, oh, good luck to the Yankees, too."All of his saves have come in relief appearances" Source: Sports Illustrated (July 5, 1989)"All of the Mets road wins against the Dodgers this year occurred at Dodger Stadium.""Cadillacs are down at the end of the bat." Source: Book of Sports Quotes (Bert Sugar)"Darryl Strawberry has been voted to the Hall of Fame five years in a row.""Hello, everybody. Welcome to Kiner
...The New York Mets today announced the following roster moves on Sunday to ready their roster for Opening Day. The Mets selected the contracts of catcher Raul Casanova and outfielder Brady Clark and added them to the 25-man roster. Clark will change his uniform to No. 44. He had worn No. 93 this spring. Catcher Ramon Castro was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, due to a right hamstring injury. Right-handed pitcher Duaner Sanchez was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27, while he continues recovering from right shoulder surgery. Sanchez underwent shoulder surgery on April 10, 2007 at New York's Hospital for Special Surgery. Mets Medical Director Dr. David Altchek inserted a screw in the coracoid, a bone in front of Sanchez's right should

This years opening day actually took place overseas in Japan and pitted the Oakland Athletics against the Boston Red Sox in a 2 game series that saw each team come away with a victory. With that being said, the Opening Day game here in the United States will pit the Atlanta Braves against the Washington Nationals. How fitting to have America's team go up against the Nation's capital's team. Atlanta will be sending right hander Tim Hudson to the mound to square off against the former Atlanta Braves left hander Odalis Perez. Both pitchers are looking good and both teams are looking poised to come out with all guns a blazing. The game is set to show on ESPN at 8:05 EST.All I can say is "Play Ball!!!!!".

Here is some of the official press release from the Yankees:The New York Yankees will open the 2008 Championship Season-the 106th in franchise history and the 84th and final season at the current Yankee Stadium-on Monday, March 31 vs. the Toronto Blue Jays at 1:05 p.m.Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson will throw out the game's ceremonial first pitch in a season that marks the 30th anniversary of the Yankees' 1978 World Championship campaign. Yankees PA announcer Bob Sheppard, who is recovering from health issues, said he will not be able to make it to Opening Day this year, the final opener at Yankee Stadium. It's ashame, the place really isn't the same without him. Sheppard does expect to be back at The Stadium at some point this year, "I don't know when it will be, but it will be," he said.
...This comes from Adam Rubin at the Daily News: I’m going to hedge in a few places because injuries have left things slightly unresolved, but here’s what I think is a pretty good stab at what the Mets’ Opening Day roster will look like. Surfing the Mets now has it on very good authority that it’ll be a five-man rotation, whether Orlando Hernandez is ready or not, since Pedro Martinez will perform optimally with extra rest in the team’s opinion. That leaves room for five bench players, plus a substitute for Moises Alou, who will land on the DL until May following hernia surgery. OK, so it's no shock at all, and I could have sworn we all knew this a few weeks ago, but today Girardi made it official, Chien-Ming Wang will be the opening day starter. "He will start Opening Day," Girardi said. "He's earned it. He's won 19 games the last couple of years, and he's thrown the ball well the last couple of years. I'm comfortable starting him Opening Day."Wang pitched in a single-A game today, and he went 5.2 innings, and gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits and a walk, and stuck out 3. He threw 88 pitches, 60 of them for strikes. Mark Fiensand tells us that "three of the runs and three of his hits allowed came in his last inning when he was clearly tired."

Cook became the youngest player to pass 1500 runs for England
England struggled to 169-7 on a rain-affected opening day of the second Test at Trent Bridge. Just 55 overs were possible as play did not start until 15:00 BST due to a waterlogged pitch. After winning the toss and choosing to field, the tourists exploited the favourable conditions with Zaheer Khan taking 3-50.Alastair Cook was dismissed seven short of his half-century while Chris Tremlett provided some resistance and is on 16 not out overnight.India took advantage of the new ball with England languishing on 47-3 at one stage. Andrew Strauss (4) was the first to be dismissed after edging an inswinger from Khan straight to Sachin Tendulkar at first slip. Skipper Michael Vaughan departed in similar fashion for nine after nicking a Khan delivery to Tendulkar. Kevin Pietersen whacked three fours on his way to 13 before being trapped lbw off RP Singh. Replays showed the ball would have gone over the stumps, after he was lucky

The girls are already in a frenzy about Lake Compounce opening on May 12th. If you haven’t yet been to Lake Compounce…
… YOU LOSE!
It’s really an amazingly good theme park. Lots to do for the entire family with a good water park and a sizeable little kids area with scaled down rides. Though be warned if you are an adult on some of them. Scaled down means good for little kids, big people tend to have a center of gravity in the wrong spot.
The best thing about Compounce is that it remains mercifully free of long lines that plague other theme parks. Yes it is a little smaller in scale than the monster Six Flags or whatever parks, but if you actually want to spend your day riding rides, rather than standing in lines, then Lake Compounce is easily the best bang for your buck anywhere in America.

Last turkey season I spent two days in the woods. One with my good friend Brian Parks and one day with my mom. My heart and soul were not into hunting. The days I spent there I needed the love and support of my family and friends more then I need the meat or the trophy. This year is different! I am out there to hunt and to kill! That may not sound very politically correct. The correct term in todays world is harvest! I don't hate the word harvest, it just doesn't fit how I feel when I am going out there. I am not farming animals, I am pursuing them, chasing them and choosing to kill them as a part of the hunt! It is not the most important part of the hunt to me, but it is a part of the hunt that I have missed over the past couple of years.Personally, I am out there to hunt and kill! It is a drive and a passion to get myself into position and to have the opportunity to take the animals that are in on my list. This year my goals are to take a turkey(or two), a bear, an antelope

Although Opening Day was delayed a week from the traditional start date for the Orioles due to the Washington Nationals to the south of Baltimore, cold temperatures and wind could not damper fans’ spirit as they beat up on the American League Champions Detroit Tigers, 6-2 yesterday in front a sellout crowd. The Yard was decked out in black and orange, and the Birds delivered yesterday. With a lot of fanfare, pomp and circumstance along with Future of Hall of Famer Cal Ripken throwing out the first pitch, starter Daniel Cabrera showed the world yesterday why he’s ready to move to next level and scare the hell out of batters facing him. Daniel didn’t walk anyone and gave up 2 runs in a little over seven innings. Poised and in control, he shut the Tigers down with command and authority. The O’s whacked around starter Chad Durbin, and the fun started when Kevin Millar hit his second homer of the year. As well, the Orioles added more runs in the third inning by playing smal

This week, in the wonderful city of Cincinnati, I possibly witnessed the worst Opening Day pitch ever. Mark Mallory, mayor of Cincinnati, attempted to throw pitch to Reds' legend Eric Davis. He fails and fails miserably. Rather than say anymore, I'll let the video speak for itself...Then he explains his performance. Actually, I'm quite impressed with his sense of humor and self-effacing nature. Then later in week, Mark Mallory gets a chance to redeem himself on the "Jimmy Kimmel Show. With a second chance, um, he does not do well. I'm so sorry to the people of Cincinnati...He's probably a good mayor, but athlete - no.
For every year of my son's life, we've attended the Texas Ranger's opening day baseball game. I'm a huge baseball fan, and there is nothing quite like the excitement of Opening Day. We will both dress up in our Ranger jersey's, buy some sunglasses, pack a bag full of fruit snacks, juice boxes and peanuts, and hit the ball field. Once we get past the super scary jet fly-over; Ryan is usually great. Great, meaning we make it to the 7th inning stretch before heading home.Well, this year I was going to take Dylan along for the ride as well. A great Father-Son-Son baseball event. But this year I pulled a goof, and we're not going. I usually get an email early in March giving me a pass code to purchase tickets early. (I get this early opportunity because I often take groups from our church to games during the summer.) This year the spam filter was my downfall. The email was trapped, and by the time I realized it was approaching opening day the whole game was completely sold o
2007 MLB Opening Day BustsAces get tagged, Lidge blows save, Monroe K's four timesJose Contreras - SP - White Sox Jose Conteras was torched for eight runs -- seven earned -- in one-plus innings by the Indians on Monday. Contreras gave up a leadoff homer to Grady Sizemore to start a five-run first. The second started with a walk, a double and an infield single/error before Contreras was pulled, and the two inherited runners came around to score off Nick Masset. Contreras finished with a 5.09 ERA this spring, but that's not bad for Arizona. He should have value in shallow mixed leagues this season. After facing him on Opening Day, Jhonny Peralta told reporters that Jose Contreras "just wasn't throwing as hard as last year." "He usually throws harder," Peralta said. "Today he was throwing a lot of sliders."Source: Cleveland Plain Dealer Brad Lidge - RP - Astros Brad Lidge blew his first save of the season when he gave up a two-out solo homer to Xavier Nady in the top of the ninth on
2007 MLB Opening Day StandoutsFelix fans 12, Sheets pitches two-hitter, Dunn & Renteria homer twiceFelix Hernandez - SP - Mariners Felix Hernandez struck out 12 in eight scoreless innings to beat the A's on Monday. Yeah, the Mariners were probably right to make him their Opening Day starter. Hernandez allowed three hits and walked two while throwing 111 pitches. The Mariners can't let him go past 110 pitches very often and still should be trying to steal an extra day of rest for him here and there. If they handle him correctly, he could be as valuable as any AL pitcher outside of Johan Santana. If not, there's a good chance he'll wear down in August and September or get hurt even before then. Jason Bay - OF - Pirates Jason Bay hit a two-run homer off Chad Qualls in the top of the 10th Monday to lead the Pirates to a 4-2 win over the Astros. That after Xavier Nady's solo blast off Brad Lidge tied it in the ninth. Bay's homer was the only hit for the Pirates' three-through-fiv
I can’t complain about a opening day win in extra innings. It was nice to go home, fire up the DVR and watch the 2007 Braves season get underway. So here’s some notes and thoughts, bullet style.

Nationals vs. Marlins - Opening DayThe Washington Nationals first game of the season did not go as expected, sadly. Although the weather was picture perfect and fans of all ages were giddy for baseball, the Florida Marlins whooped up on the Nationals 9-2. Fans were treated to music before the game, the stadium was decked in red, white and blue, and there was a dramatic flyover with 2 F-18 military aircraft. Dontrelle Willis looked solid and earned the win, while John Patterson only pitched a little more than 3 innings, giving up 6 runs. In the game, Miguel Cabrera and Dan Uggla hit monster home runs for the Marlins, but Nationals shortstop Christian Guzman and Outfielder Nook Logan left the game with injuries. However, Ryan Zimmerman looked impressive, had two hits and made an impressive play at third where he threw a runner out, while basically sitting down. In the end, perhaps the Ryan Zimmerman and company can beat the doomsday predictions by the pundits and experts throug

Just got back from RFK and caught the Nationals take on the Marlins. The Nationals lost, but it was a wonderful day at the ballpark -- picture perfect.I'll have pictures uploaded in a bit...That being said, the O's season begins right now! I'm watching the game at this moment!
It’s that time of the year again, baseball season. And here in Cincinnati, it’s sorta treated like a huge holiday. We have a big parade downtown and the stadium is always sold out. And of course, hope springs eternal for Cincinnati Reds fans, although the team is nowhere near competing for a pennant. Even so, on this Opening Day in Major League Baseball, enjoy this mix of baseball themed songs.
And by the way, did you happen to know that Tapes N Tapes have a song, “Insistor” that will be featured on the soundtrack to the new “Major League Baseball 2K7″ video game? Also, 2K Sports will sponsor the band’s upcoming tour, which hits 400- to 1,100-capacity venues across North America this spring.
As always, for the very best coverage of our Cincinnati Reds, check out Reds Reporter, a top notch Reds blog.

CummingsThere’s something special about Opening Day, a sensation that can only compare to the cool autumn Saturdays in Ann Arbor, watching winged helmets fly around a field. Yet, I’m not going there today, because it is spring that’s in the air, not fall, and I’ll be longing for football soon enough. Besides, the feelings are comparable, but they’re not the same. There is an undeniable magic about them both that leaves my mind soaring and my heart pounding in my chest, but it isn’t the same, not at all. I love watching hockey, coll
Play Ball! Those two simple words signify much more than their literal meanings. 'Play Ball!' unofficially introduces us to the light breeze of spring and eternal optimism. Faithful fans' hopes will be soaring soon after homeplate gets dusted off by the umpire. New York Yankees' manager Joe Torre has named Carl Pavano the starting pitcher on opening day. Pavano hasn't pitched in the majors since June 2005 because of a series of injuries.Following Pavano in the rotation will be Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina and Kei Igawa. The fifth spot still hasn't been filled.Pavano was given the start because of injuries to Pettitte and Chien-Ming Wang. Pettitte will likely start the second game, but Wang probably won't return until May.For the article on this and other decisions made by Joe Torre, click here.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona named SP Curt Schilling the Opening Day starter for the team's April 2 season opener at Kansas City Thursday, according to MLB.com. This will be the second season in a row that Schilling will be the Opening Day hurler for the BoSox. Schilling is in a contract year and will be motivated to have a good season. He remains a top 25 Fantasy ace, even at his age, because of all that anticipated run support. Source: CBS SportsLine.com
Chone Figgins has a fracture near the tip of his right middle finger and will be examined on Friday. Finger injuries tend to be particularly troubling for basestealers such as Figgins, given the abundance of head-first slides they're forced to make. There was no immediate estimate on whether he'd be ready in time for Opening Day. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Maicer Izturis and Robb Quinlan would fill in during the speedster's absence. Appearing in his first A game in spring, Eric Gagne allowed a solo homer and struck out one in an inning of work on Tuesday. Despite the long ball, this was another positive step for the Rangers closer, who the team hopes will be ready in time for Opening Day. Even so, considering Gagne's shaky health record over the past two seasons, not to mention multiple surgical procedures, owners gambling on him are almost obliged to select teammate Akinori Otuska, last year's fireman, as a precaution. Big surprise, Scott Kazmir will be the Devil Rays' Opening Day starter. Manager Joe Maddon officially announced that the staff ace will open the 2007 campaign, when the Rays play the Yankees in the Bronx on April 2.Kazmir went 10-8 with a 3.24 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 2006. He started 24 games, pitched 144.2 innings and recorded an impressive 163 K's. He had a stiff shoulder for most of the second half last season, prompting the Rays to eventually employ the cautious approach by shutting him down the rest of the year. Kazmir's last appearance of '06 came on Aug. 22, when he earned a no-decision against the Rangers in a 5-3 Rays' win. Maddon could be counted among the cautious last summer, but not anymore. He's convinced that Kazmir is more than ready for the upcoming season.Any questions that the Rays might have had about Kazmir's shoulder have been answered this spring. The left-hander has pitched pain-free since the beginning of Spring Training, and his performance has improve
Athletics manager Bob Geren announced that righty Dan Haren will start against the host Mariners on Opening Day, April 2. Geren wouldn't divulge the rest of the rotation, but that, too, appears obvious -- assuming righty Esteban Loaiza's shoulder doesn't give him any more trouble and lefty Joe Kennedy hangs onto the No. 5 spot (battling Brad Halsey). Haren pitched Sunday against the Angels, Loaiza is scheduled to face the Padres on Monday, Rich Harden works Tuesday, righty Joe Blanton on Wednesday and Kennedy on Thursday. That's the order in which they'll likely work to start the regular season. The A's like the idea of splitting up Haren and Harden because they have similar, hard-throwing styles. Haren started 34 games for the Athletics last year going 14-13 with a 4.12 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. He pitched 223 innings and recorded 176 K's. Source: MLB.com
For the second straight season, the D-Train will be the Marlins Opening Day starter. In a no-surprise move, Dontrelle Willis has officially been tabbed to make the April 2 start when the Marlins face the Nationals at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. The decision was announced on Monday morning by manager Fredi Gonzalez. Following Willis in the rotation will be Scott Olsen, Anibal Sanchez and Ricky Nolasco, who will start the home opener on April 6 against Phillies at Dolphin Stadium. Because of an off day on April 5, the Marlins will go with a four-man rotation until April 10. The front-runner for the fifth spot is Sergio Mitre, while Yusmeiro Petit is also in consideration. Thus far, Willis is having an up-and-down spring in terms of statistics. His record is 0-3 with a 6.92 ERA in four starts. One of his objectives now is lowering his walk totals, and he is encouraged that he has only issued just two free passes in 13 innings this spring. In 2006, Willis walked a career-high 83 bat
Tigers manager Jim Leyland named Jeremy Bonderman the Tigers starter on Opening Day, which is April 2 against Toronto at Comerica Park. Bonderman, the 24-year-old right-hander, will be followed in the starting rotation by Kenny Rogers, Justin Verlander, Nate Robertson and Mike Maroth. In 34 starts last season, Bonderman was 14-8 with a 4.08 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 202 K's in 214 innings during the regular season. He was 1-0 in the postseason.
