Patience at the Plate Key to Series Opener
The Yanks open a 3 game set at the Stadium tonight against Fausto Carmona and the Cleveland Indians. Returning to the days of plate discipline will be a key to tonight's game. While I don't wish injury upon anyone, Carmona is my top pick for an injury this year after seeing an increase of 141 innings last year (74 in '06 to 215 in '07). We are certainly seeing some affects of his work load increase so far in 2008. After walking only 61 batters all of last year (2.55/9), Carmona has already walked 26 batters this season (6.88/9). He has also allowed a hit per inning (34 H in 34 IP) making for an extremely high whip of 1.731. He has walked exactly twice the batters that he has struck out so far (13 Ks, 26 BBs). Regardless of all of this, Carmona has only allowed 1 HR so far this year which h

      The Neck Crank (Can Opener)
Although I don't use this very often, the Can Opener (Basic Neck Crank) is a very simple submission that can also be used as a very effective way to set up a guard pass.Video (Submissions 101):-Your opponent has you in a very tight guard-You get your arms inside-With your elbows tight together, you grip behind his head and start to torque it towards you, cranking his neck-If he doesn't tap, more times than not, he will at least unhook his legs, which you can use to immediately go for a guard pass.Cautions:-This move is dangerous, so apply with care.-If you are going to use it, watch out for the armbar.(Note: I've just seen far too many grip break to arm-drag to armbar counters)-The easiest counter to this move is to post your hands into the sternum of the person using this on you and stif

Her half-century stands with Chamari Polgampola and Shashikala Siriwardene allowed Sri Lanka to set Pakistan a target of 226. In reply, Pakistan crawled to 129 for 8 in 50 overs. Silva hit 12 fours in her innings and was run out in the 37th over after taking her side to 150. T-Ball Opener
And so it begins...Austin's baseball career officially started this week. His first t-ball game was a roller coaster of fun. Austin is quite the little competitor and Daddy really got in to it. There were as many parents on the field as children. When a batter connected with the ball it was like a mini stampede. Austin kept trying to go after the ball. After about the third time of not getting the ball when he started running toward Clif and crying. I have to give him credit, though. He dried up and went after the next ball. Finally, he got one and then another and life was good. His at bats were fun too. He had to swing a couple of times to hit it at each bat, but once he connected he hit it a good way. The thing that amazed me the most was how he had picked up on baseball mannerisms. He

Pirates Home Opener: An In-Person Recap
While we were all working extremely hard on a Monday afternoon, 37,491 of our baseball-loving friends turned out at PNC Park for the pomp and pageantry that was the Pirates' 2008 Home Opener: Donnie Iris, Bill Mazeroski, Lou Piniella, Aramis Ramirez, a former Povertyneck Hillbilly, AND a flyover. Luckily, I arranged in advance for a first-person report, and made sure my field correspondent put their photo-taking emphasis on the really interesting stuff: the action around the game. I'm sure you already know that the Pirates dug a 7-0 hole by the 3rd inning, I'm sure you know that they somehow botched a 9th-inning rally with a bizarre, two-on/one-out bunt, and I'm sure you know that ultimately, the Pirates would send their fans home disappointed with a 10-8 loss in 12 innings. He still hasn't pitched back-to-back games, something relievers typically do toward the end of camp. "That will happen when the time is right," Sanchez said.Pitching in a minor-league exhibition against the Cardinals' Triple-A team yesterday morning, Sanchez gave up only a leadoff double. Chavez Likely To Miss Opener
Reported By Stephen Rhodes The chances of Oakland A's third basemen starting in the team's season opener appear remote, at best. At least that's the feeling around the team's clubhouse as of late; the team's trainer, Steve Sayles, wouldn't say whether Chavez would make the team's trip to Japan on March 19, but he told John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, "It would be more advantageous if he stayed here and got work done."Chavez hasn't done much during spring training, as he hasn't done any running or fielding grounders; he has been limited to throwing lightly and batting practice. As anyone who has had a back procedure knows, the recovery time from back surgery can be painfully slow, and the recent epidural that Chavez received further delayed his recovery timetable. The Aussie, Daniel Batman, beat Wariner in the 200-meters at the Sydney Grand Prix in Australia. Batman led from the start and won in 20.81. Jeremy was second in 20.93.J Dub's time was decent considering the early time of year, and a lost in the 200-meters means nothing. The 400 is his bread and butter."This is really just a tuneup race for me to see where I'm at with my training and what I need to work on," Wariner said. However, the race won't be enough to satisfy the "do nothing" media. Conference Opener
Well, its what I consider to be the third greatest time of the year, Conference time. The first two are the beginning of the season and post-season time, respectively. Last night was our conference opener. We played Eckerd College and won. I have a personal rivalry with Eckerd, since my brother went there and I almost went there. The game was a back and forth game all night. The final score was 73-72. This is the fourth year in a row that we have won our conference opener. Michael Baptiste and Ed Millard provided the opening baskets for the Knights. After the game was tied 7-7, we went on an 11-2 run, but Eckerd responded with a 14-2 run. The score at half was 31-26. Eckerd and us traded baskets to start the 2nd half, until we took the lead four minutes in on a Randy Jones three-pointer. We were up at one point 55-44, before Eckerd went on an 11-1 run. We traded shot for shot and point for point and hitting key free throws down the stretch. Luke Postorino hit 5 free throws, including 1

QUESTION # 639: CAN YOU SPARE AN OPENER

Opening cans with rocks may seem like a good idea but it will usually render the contents of the can unusable. Since you seem bent on destruction, and not consumption, then allow me to suggest some far more ingenious methods of destruction. The simplest, and often most pungent, method would be to stuff the can in question inside of a fire. Some will say that vent holes would be a good idea. I say it robs you of the satisfying bang that comes when you know that the can is opened! It also saves some nasty burns as you fish around a live fire checking to see if it opened yet. If you are afraid of getting burned then you can move on to more mechanical solutions. You can try to run over the can with your car but you'll find

Of course, not everyone agreed – which is totally understandable – and I thank everyone who took the time to comment and provide their own take and help make the article infinitely more balanced. Anyway, one scenario in the post briefly touched upon the opening of beer and wine bottles. Although I mentioned a few items that can use to open beer bottles, I failed to illustrate exactly how they are used. So, for those folks wanting to learn a little more about this fundamental road-skill, I’m proud to present the following clips:- This first one shows how to open a bottle of beer with that dual purpose lighter How To Open A Beer Bottle With One Move   …Wondering ho

      Packers win season opener
Been awhile since the Pack has won the first game of the season, but they did it this season. The game ball should go to special teams and the defense they played great while the offense sputtered a little.I thought it was overall a great game with the Pack playing with more passion then the Eagles.

Colts Crush Saints In Season Opener
Thursday night, the Indianapolis Colts crushed the Saints of New Orleans in the NFL season opener, 41-10. I picked the Colts to win, but never gave it a thought that the Saints would look so horrible.Drew Brees passed for a semi-decent 192 yards, but didn't throw for any touchdowns. He did, however, throw two interceptions. Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush both rushed for a disappointing 38 yards and no touchdowns. On the brighter side of the game, the Colts, led by Peyton Manning, looked just as good as they did last year. Manning passed for 288 yards and 3 touchdowns, two of which went to receiver Reggie Wayne.Although I thought this game would be closer, my prediction for the most part was correct. The colts won, but the Saints came nowhere close. Don't count out the Saints just yet, though. They have a good team and a good coach. They should have the kinks worked out by next week's game against Tampa Bay. I'll have my predictions for this week's remaining games posted by Saturd

Its early in the season, but the Colts only allowed 4 points and had 2 int.'s, a fumble recovery and 1 touchdown. Pretty good start to the year. If you watched the game, the Co

England coach named his team for World Cup opener
According to official sources, England boss Brian Ashton named his squad for the defending champion's Rugby World Cup opener against the United States in Lens on Saturday.Ashton was forced into a late change after Jonny Wilkinson's new injury jinx struck with the flyhalf suffering a twisted ankle in training here Tuesday."Indeed, Jonny Wilkinson twisted his ankle in training this morning and is not available for selection," Ashton expressed."I think he is going for a scan this afternoon to determine the nature and the extent of the injury and until tomorrow there will be no further medical update."Bath's Olly Barkley will inherit the number 10 shirt, with Saracens' Andy Farrell lining up on the bench. And despite Wilkinson's absence Ashton was in bullish mood ahead of the game at Lens' Felix-Bollaert ground."We've picked a XV that we think will do a job against the USA," he stated. In all there were six modifications from the side that lined up to face France in the second of Eng

Packers RB Jackson May Miss Opener
Coach Mike McCarthy characterized Jackson’s concussion from practice today as “mild,” and didn’t rule Jackson out of playing Thursday night at Tennessee. However, any concussion is of major concern because of the unpredictable nature of head injuries, and there’s a chance he won’t be recovered for next week’s opener. Reported by Pete Dougherty, Green Bay Post-Gazette <<<Hotwire>>> Assuming Jackson doesn’t play Thursday, the Packers will go into Tennessee with rookie DeShawn Wynn, who will be making his preseason debut after missing the first three games because of a quadriceps injury; Noah Herron, who’s the No. 3 halfback behind Jackson and Morency; and undrafted rookie Corey White, who’s also expected to get some work at fullback.

Lions Martz: RB K. Jones Will Be Ready for Opener
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz is expecting injured tailback Kevin Jones to return by the start of the regular season. The prognosis for Jones’ return has been up in the air since late last season, when he sustained a severe injury to his left foot. There has been speculation that Jones will miss at least the first six games of the season. However, Martz said Wednesday that he thinks Jones will be ready to play when the Lions play at Oakland on Sept. 9. Reported by  Mike O’Hara, Detroit News <<<Hotwire>>> I don’t know if Martz is sincerely optimistic or just in denial but I’d still draft Jones around the 8th round. Worst case scenario, you get a fresh legged, mid-season boost from a proven RB. Best case, you have a starting RB by week one and only spent an 8th rounder for him.

DISCOTHEQUE,SKIRTS,AND AN EYE OPENER PART 2
View poll (such a cute baby asking for a lift- who can say ‘NO’, and now I was impressed so much with her sensibility, that I really wanted to shake hands with her fortunate parents!) Fine! – She said as she jumped in my car on the seat adjacent to me… {I started driving my car…zzzzzzz...00000...ooooom………….} Close to one small hut, she asked me to stop the car… I held her hands in mine as she knocked at the door, the area was full of slum clusters…..A woman came out to open the door. By her Gait, I was able to judge that she was blind! She asked me to squat as there was nothing to sit on... ,Inside that hut. The baby doll with her ice-cream now finished…looked at me and whispered in my ears, “They have the most precious stone, you would have never seen”. And I minced my lips and raised my eyebrows in appreciation! She took me inside and there I saw a “Grinding Stone&rdq

      THE DISCOTHEQUE,SKIRTS AND AN EYE OPENER-PART 1
View poll In my teen age, I used to be like every other girl, changing nail paints to match my dress, bunking classes to catch a latest Movie, faking friend’s Birthday for late nights and spending hours in a parlor to look like a real hottie. Also shopping down through all my pocket money and still have nothing good to wear on parties…. And ONE NIGHT changed it all…………………. There was this discotheque cum Bar at the 36, Milestone, Gurgaon, where we hotties used to leave house for late at night. We used to leave home wearing just a pair of Jeans and T-shirt (but an item dress inside…I tell you…!) (You can’t change dress on the way right! And I was not allowed to wear such dresses by my family…so it was the best way out! Remove your jeans and shirt and join the party with the item- dress (door bitch will be impressed!) and wear it again over this dress to be safe at home…simple&hel

Eagles QB McNabb to Miss Pre-Season Opener
Eagles Quarterback Donovan McNabb, recovering from surgery on his right knee, will not play Monday when the Eagles open their preseason with a game in Baltimore against the Ravens. McNabb hasn’t played in a game since he tore a ligament against the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 19. <<<Hotwire>>> Nothing too surprising here. They’ve been saying they’re going to take it easy with McNabb during the pre-season. I would expect to see him briefly by the 3rd pre-season game.

Trent Green booed in pre-season opener
Dolphins coach Cam Cameron said that the team did zero game planning and that he only had 40% of his offense installed so far and it was very apparent during Miami's pre-season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Dolphins won 18-17 but that was despite an offense that looked lethargic at best.Trent Green got the start but he struggled as he only completed 6 of his 15 pass attempts for 60 yards. Green took every snap of the first half but could only lead the offense to one field goal and as a result he got booed by the crowd."It's a crazy business," said Green, who added he didn't hear the jeers. "People can respond to different things. I don't take a lot of that too much to heart being that it's the first preseason game. That's why you play preseason games."It's just the first game of the pre-season so of course everyone's going to be rusty and that's why you have the find the little positives wherever you can.The goodRonnie Brown's back-up Jessie Chatman looked good

Morning Drop Off and a Bottle Opener
Amazingly, Cordy wanted to go to school today. Actually came up to me at home and said, "School?" and then rushed me to get everything together and get out the door. She really wanted to get there! That is, until we actually got there. Then she changed her mind and wailed as if I was leaving her with Britney Spears as a babysitter. Ah well, it's a little progress, right? While trying to say goodbye, one teacher pointed out her shirt was on inside out. Oops. I could blame it on her trying to dress herself, but they would only laugh at me, knowing she would sooner explain Einstein's theory of relativity than take any steps to put on her own clothing. No, mommy is clearly unable to pay attention to how she's dressing her child.Still, I'm impressed that she actually asked to go to school this morning, and even carried her backpack out to the car.We received a call from our county early intervention contact, letting us know that the school district has decided to move up her evaluation o
