Before I left to India, I took part in a pretty cool money making opportunity.
A Realtor in the neighborhood needed somebody to run a couple open houses for her. The hours could be Saturday and/or Sunday between 1 pm to 4 pm. Since I am not licensed to sell real estate all I can do at the open house is either pass the question on to the Realtor later or “point towards” the answer in the brochure or something. I would also be required to buy balloons, stick up signs, and bring some baked goods. At the end of the open house I would need to fax her the contacts sheet.
For my “hard work,” I would receive $18/hour, plus $20 that would replenish the money I spent on balloons and baked goods. Not bad for just a couple hours of work.

The 23-unique boutique luxury condo development in the former Penny Savings Bank is our Featured Open House of the week. Earlier this year, The pre-war bank in Boston’s South End was completely renovated and a glass enclosure was added to the top of the original structure to create what is now The Residences at Penny Savings Bank.

We went to our kids school's open house last night. It was nice to get together with their teachers and classmates, see some of the works they have done in class and to meet other parents. My kids go to a public school. I know for some parents that sounds "scary", that's why you home school. But this public school that my kids go to is an excellent school and I know their teachers well so I am comfortable with it. Tatay and Nanay came with us and they were impressed. So as I sat at my open house today I pondered the age old question of who benefits from an open house? Many sellers believe that open houses are necessary components to a well-rounded marketing plan. I say, “maybe.” The jury’s still out on that. I guess it can’t hurt, but it’s actually a very small number of homes that are sold to a buyer who walked into the open house and decided to purchase that home.
Most of our open house traffic these days comes from 1 of 2 places (maybe a distant 3rd)… 1) signs 2) online ads (CraigsList, etc) or (the distant 3rd) local newspaper ads (and I don’t mean The Washington Post – I mean a publication such as the Sun Gazette). What that potentially means is that the quality of the open house attendee has diminished.

As we all know by now, open houses are becoming less and less effective for the marketing and sale of real estate. Open houses still exist thanks in part to misinformed sellers and real estate agents who can't say no nor tell the client the truth (that they don't work like they used to). But what will completely kill open houses are videos - of properties, inside and out streaming directly to the masses. And remember, America is built on convenience and videos are much more convenient than a traditional open house.
