Autistic Children "Rotting On The Vine" In Ontario - Why Not Consider "the New Brunswick Autism Model"?
In Wait list for autism therapy growing, critics charge the Star.com reports that "the wait list of autistic children who are eligible to receive intensive behavioural intervention therapy, or IBI, reached 1,148 on March 31, up from 985 last year." NDP critics argue that the government is moving at a slow, even glacial, pace resulting in many children "rotting on the vine" in the words of NDP critic Andrea Horwath who was also quoting parents she had met at a town hall meeting. The article describes spending increases by the McGuinty government but does not really describe a plan for getting children off the autism wait lists. When I was in Ontario last week, as part of the Medicare for Autism NOW! campaign, I had the privilege of meeting some Ontario parents and discussing autism

"Our generation has taken to the cosmetic use of pesticides, I think perhaps unwittingly not fully understanding the dangers it represents to ourselves but most importantly to our children," Premier Dalton McGuinty said. Health advocates applauded the new bill arguing the effects of chemicals on young children and pregnant women can lead to cancer or neurological problems. The government is currently undergoing consultations to firm up the list of prohibited chemicals but many large retailers have already announced they will stop selling the products and increase the use of alternatives. Family Day: Ontario's New Stat Holiday
Today is Ontario’s first statutory holiday which celebrates the family. Our Premier Dalton McGuinty officially introduced this holiday after some 20 years of anticipating another day off. In our society work consumes a large majority of our time and energy. In a time of constant change and the advent of newer technology which supposedly makes our lives easier, one would think that there would be much more time for family, however this is not the case at all. There is a huge pressure on workers to climb the corporate ladder and earn more money not only to survive but to make sure our family survives well. In 2005, Statistics Canada found that 40% of stressed out men and women attributed their strain to work pressures and the next 10% attributed their source of stress to money struggl

The "agenda" seems to have been to have Zwicker on the show, showcase him as a paranoid "Conspiracy Theorist" and then have a panel follow up and explain why he was a paranoiac. However, Zwicker was so damn good in the opening segment with Paikin, that the episode was re-named, "Barrie Zwicker - Conspiracy Anyone?", and split into two distinct segments, the first with Zwicker, called "The Interview - Fact or ficti

Organic Beef Farming Takes Hold in Ontario Due to its Benefits
By: Thomas Ahrens Organic farming is not new to Ontario. To a limited degree, it has been practiced for a number of years on small private farms that catered to the needs of a very select group of consumers, who it seems, knew something that the majority did not. Today, people are clearly apprehensive about the quality and the safety of the food they buy, and consumers have the right to be concerned. Every week there is a new report that focuses on some problem in the food industry. Stories of genetically altered food, e-coli outbreaks, and the use of growth hormones have caused many Canadians to re-evaluate the food that they feed their families. In addition, recent media attention focusing on the health of our environment gives consumers another reason to consider purchasing eco-friendly organic food products. Canadians that are worried about their family's health, and the health of the planet, are turning to organically produced food products such as organic beef. Certified Ontario

Ontario urged to review Cdn$30,000 claims deductible, verbal thresholds for auto injury
Ontario’s superintendent of financial services should review the use of the verbal threshold for establishing serious and permanent injury and/or the use of a Cdn$30,000 deductible to discourage plaintiffs from pursuing smaller auto negligence claims, according to the summary of findings in the Civil Justice Reform Project. The author of the Civil Justice Reform report, former associate Chief Justice of Ontario Coulter Osborne, released his findings in November 2007. Smaller auto negligence claims represent 21% of the province’s Superior Court of Justice claims, Osborne noted. In his report, Osborne noted Ontario’s Bill 198 amendments to the Insurance Act in 1996, as well as its associated regulations, are intended to minimize smaller auto negligence claims. How to Ensure a Memorable Winter Holiday in Ontario's Resort Region
By: Craig Esson When they take their Ontario winter time resort holiday, vacationers expect to experience crisp clear days in a landscape draped in a fluffy white blanket of fresh fallen snow. They want to be able to skate or fish on glass smooth frozen lakes and they want to ski or snowmobile on an adequate base of snow. Over the last few years, Ontario resort owners have found that they can no longer count on the abundant snowfalls of the past that attracted a steady stream of vacationers and guaranteed resorts a long and profitable winter season. The current trend in Ontario's weather of milder winter time temperatures and reduced snowfall could prove disastrous for Ontario's resort industry. However, by following the guidelines stated below, you will be well on your way to creating a memorable winter getaway in Ontario's resort region regardless of what the weather brings. If you are insistent upon having a winter getaway filled with outdoor activities that require a great deal o

Forseeable risk liability waiver supported by Ontario Court
The legal test for negligence — which would absolve an outdoor equipment provider of liability in a personal injury case — is “not perfection but rather to design a product so as to eliminate any unreasonable risk of foreseeable injury,” the Ontario Superior Court ruled in Enslev v. Challenges Unlimited Inc. And although an outdoor swing designer might have foreseen operator error during the use of the product, the consequences of the operator error nevertheless could not have been predicted, the court found. The decision upheld a waiver of liability contained in a signed contract between a Cleveland House (a Muskoka resort) and Challenges Unlimited, an outdoor equipment supplier. via

Places like Ashtabula, Cleveland and Mentor are vying for the honor. The article says Ashtabula is ahead of the game because they already have the proper docking system. Cleveland's Port Authority is lobbying heavily. You can read about it here.Maybe it's just me, but I say let the Ferry go to whomever can do it most cost effectively. It will help our Cleveland economy no matter where it is, imho. We can host the 3C Corridor rail plan!Peace Out -3C

Why Having A Favorite Ice Hockey Team Is Important For Your Self By Johnny McKenzie, Thu Dec 8th Over the years that I have been a fan of ice hockey I havealways had a favorite ice hockey team that I have cheered for. I have to admit that my favorite team has changed every now andthen though, but that is merely because I have been movingaround from city to city. I guess that humans somehow change their emotions depending onwhere they life. One big reason for this might be that it is easier to cheer forthe same ice hockey team as your hockey friends cheer for orpeople at your workplace cheer for. Having a favorite ice hockey team that you can identify yourselfwith can in many cases be good for your self confidence though. For example you and those around you will always know where youstand. This is something that can be important in many cases. The one thing that I love the most though is that you go to anice hockey game with your fellow hockey fans buddies; it almostfeels like the peopl

In Ontario there is a special education Appeals Board, but school districts are not obliged to implement their decisions. Instead, most special education disputes are contested in the Ontario Human Rights Commission. A denial of FAPE essentially constitutes unlawful discrimination on the basis of handicap under the law there. There is also a major lawsuit pending involving preschool children with autism alleging handicap and age discrimination as well as violations of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. On a long weekend in summer, Ontario's famed Algonquin Provincial Park hosts about 25,000 campers -- about the same number as Mississagi Provincial Park receives all year. The difference is largely a matter of longitude. The further north you travel, the fewer people you're likely to run into. If you are planning a camping trip this year, here's a list of Northern Ontario's family friendly provincial parks.

Mike Colle Took the Fall for the Ontario Liberals
Even though Mike Colle took the fall in this scandal, those who are to blame are actually the Liberals themselves, especially Dalton McGuinty.Mike Colle, Ontario's Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, tendered his resignation, but he'll remain an MPP in the riding of Eglinton-Lawrence. This happened thanks to a report released by Ontario's Auditor general Jim McCarter revealing that $32 million was scandalously given out to ethnic organizations without any accountability.Indeed, we can tell very easily that Dalton McGuinty, Ontario's Premier, didn't want to deal with this political scandal. Think about the upcoming provincial election of October 10! Even though Mike Colle took the fall in this scandal, those who are to blame are actually the Liberals themselves, especially Dalton McGuinty (photo).Last March, the New Democratic Party (NDP) demanded explanations about why $200,000 was granted to what was described as the Iranian-Canadian Community Centre. However, CBC and the To

      Ontario Science Centre Hydraulophone
I’ve designed several fountains that are supposed to make their own music. In principle, they are similar to a player piano or a wind-up music box. They use the water’s behavior and natural sounds (splashes, trickles, flowing past fins, etc.) to make specific “notes.” One of these days, I’ll actually construct some of these. In the meantime, there is the interactive musical fountain at the Ontario Science Center. (I’m not Canadian, so I fixed the “re” on the end there for ya.) This is one I really must go see some day soon. I absolutely love that this piece is designed for people to get in, on, around, and to play with. I asked my younger sister to find a place and let them live their remaining years in peace. She decided to allow them to stay in their home and she will look in on them daily. They live in a two storey home are the doctors advised for them not to use stairs and they are constantly up and down the stairs. Exhibiting art locally - in Ontario and Leicestershire
Barton Street Warehouse 3copyright Gordon LevertonTwo of my cyber chums, Gord Leverton and Vivien Blackburn are both heavily involved with 'art shows' in their respective local areas at the moment. Both also use pastels in their artwork. In my opinion, they both do excellent work and I'm highlighting below the various opportunities to see their work in person in the next couple of monthsGetting your work shown seems to me to be directly related to the effort made by an artist to finding opportunities to show their work. Lots of opportunities exist at a local level for all artists - and you can find them and make them work for you if you put some effort into making it happen. I think both these artists are an excellent example of the type of person who gets actively involved with local groups and creating/making opportunities to show their work in both local exhibitions and galleries. This in turn helps to generate exhibitions of their work further afield. This weekend Gord Leve

New Loft Developments in Toronto, Ontario
Loft living is at its finest in Toronto, and the market is booming. There are literally dozens upon dozens of loft developments under construction in Toronto, and competition is tough. For many people interested in purchasing living space in a new loft development, the search begins early and it is grueling. One thing that makes finding a loft so difficult is that 50 percent of loft developments are sold before the building is listed on the public market. This means that people wishing to buy a loft must do a lot of research and try to secure a loft before construction is completed. If they are successful, there are many rewards. Many lofts in the Toronto area increase in value anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000 on the day that they are placed for sale on the public housing market.Lofts are distinct from condos in that they feature exposed ductwork, exposed beams and columns, few interior walls, and high ceilings. They are very open spaces, commonly two stories high and have a lot of orig

So I work at a flower store… and I love the shopautodotca seocontest. I am actually pretty proud of myself with regards to the website. I know it is nothing fancy but I am really new to this and the page was not really designed for any other purpose than to succeed in the search engines. We already had two sites that are offered by the florist organizations, but these are designed to do badly in the search engines in my opinion. They don't let you change any of the tags or title and there is very little you can do (you get this crummy little dashboard where you can change the price of the flowers and change your greeting and make coupons and dumb stuff). I figure FTD and Teleflora do it that way to be democratic because there are a lot of other florists in the area that they provide sites to. So the only

The Advantages of Living in Mississauga, Ontario
Crash!! How can you be prepared for a vehicle accident? Perhaps your reaction time was just a little too slow, or the weather conditions really did mean slow down. Well, now what?Vehicle collision is an everyday, worldwide occurrence. When automobile accidents happen, most people are not prepared for the initial impact, nor for the subsequent impact on their daily life and the inconvenience that usually follows. For most people the second largest investment you will make is the purchase of a vehicle. The aftermath of an auto accident is a very stressful time. Getting back on the road after an experience of shattering glass, crunching steel and squealing brakes can be an overwhelming task to take on in an already busy day. If you could eliminate the disadvantages of living in a large city - the high cost of living, the lack of natural attractions, and the hustle and bustle of city life - while at the same time enjoying all of the advantages of city life, you would consider yourself prett

Political correctness and the Ontario courts... again
This time it's a group called Secular Ontario that has suddenly decided to take on a 210-year old practice of saying the Lord's Prayer in Ontario municipal courts.Using the traditional Christian prayer in council is illegal and sends the wrong message, says Sheila Ayala, a member of Secular Ontario.'I think what they're saying at council meetings when they say the Lord's Prayer is that this council is only for Christians — it's not for anyone else. And that's wrong.'— Sheila Ayala, Secular OntarioThe real question is what do they really want to replace it with? Oh of course, nothing. Notice how it's not a religious group complaining but a secular group. Western society in its desire for political correctness has for some strange reason placed secularism as the default belief system. Instead of celebrating different religions, political correctness advocates supressing them all in favour of non-religion. We saw that with the controversy over the Christmas trees in an Ontari

So says CTV News, though FIAT chairman Sergio Marchonne has not acknowledged any talks with Ontario's government-- but has set a goal of building a New World Alfa Romeo by 2012. Ontario can bank on a small home-field advantage; Marchionne was raised and educated in the Toronto area. A joint venture is possible, given that any Alfa will initially be a low-volume niche vehicle. Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, General Motors and Honda are all well-established manufacturers in Ontario.
