Windows OneCare getting itself confused, again
I thought that OneCare might be a decent all in one bit of security software. I was wrong. On my desktop Vista PC it works OK most of the time. Hmm.. good point, how do I know it’s actually doing anything, maybe I’ve been lucky and just haven’t been anywhere near any security problems. Anyway the OneCare icon in the tray stays green most of the time which means it’s happy with itself. Well it was till yesterday when it was suddenly red and displayed me a message that it’s virus definitions were out of date. I thought it was responsible for updating its own virus definitions. Also, when I double clicked on the icon to see why it was red it seemed that it had turned off its own Windows Defender. On my other two PC’s, which also have OneCare installed, both of their icons are permanently red and when I check on those it says that it hasn’t been able to install some of its own updates. One of the PC’s is running Vista and the other XP. No dou

      Microsoft OneCare Flawed
For once, a Microsoft employee (most likely a soon-to-be-former employee at this point) has admitted something most of us have known for a long time: Microsoft OneCare shouldn’t have been released. Anyone who’s actually tried using OneCare has known this for a long time. Add to that the recent discoveries that OneCare fails to pass independent testing (actually, it was the only product tested that failed to gain any certifications) and OneCare fails to protect Windows Vista (but to be fair, McAfee isn’t doing much better in that regard). My favourite quotes from the article that pretty accurately sum things up: Asked about these problems, Arno Edelmann, Microsoft’s European business security product manager, told ZDNet UK on Thursday that the code itself has pieces missing. “Usually Microsoft doesn’t develop products, we buy products. It’s not a bad product, but bits and pieces are missing,” said Edelmann. So, in other words, Microsoft

Live Onecare loses own antivirus and a new kernel in SP1
I have Windows Live Onecare on all three of my machines. One of them a Vista running laptop I hadn’t turned on for about 10 days, till yesterday. Onecare started when Vista starts and it had a look around to see what the state of the machines security is. And guess what? It told me I didn’t have an antivirus and suggested I connected to the internet to get one. Eh. Which is more than I can say for Onecare. Paul Thurrott reckons Vista SP1 will come with a new kernel. That sounds like an operating system upgrade not a service pack upgrade. Jeez, how bad is the current Vista kernel if it’s got to
