Some (very) minor griping aside, if you're a Four Thirds shooter there's really nothing not to like about the Olympus Zuiko 14-35mm f/2.0 Digital ED SWD, which is exactly as it should be for a high-end piece of kit. Overall, this lens, with its excellent image quality and speed, is ideal for working photojournalists, especially – a group of photographers among whom the Olympus system has already gained a reasonably strong foothold. With its wide to moderate telephoto range, it's equally well suited to shooting portraits (though it may be a little short yet for some kinds of portraiture work) or architecture. In conclusion, I really do want to like this camera. Although Olympus and Panasonic were the pioneers of Live View systems, the feature is now almost a standard fixture, even on pro models, so there's no surprise to see the same system here. What is quite surprising is Olympus' decision to only go with 10MP on the E-3, especially considering other manufacturers recent reliance on higher pixel counts at this price point (and below). CONCLUSIONSThe Olympus E-420 is touted as the "world's smallest digital SLR" and there is no doubt the camera is compact and light – mounting the 25mm lens and ready to shoot with a CF card onboard, my review unit weighed in at just under 18.5 ounces. As DCR.com editor David Rasnake mentioned in his First Thoughts piece on this camera, with the 25mm lens onboard in particular, the E-420 is approaching mid-size ultrazoom territory: 5 x 3.5 x 3.75 inches, versus the Canon S5 IS at 4.6 x 3.15 x 3.06 inches and about 18 ounces. Olympus is set to increase the price of digital SLR lenses and accessories by around 15%, blaming the falling value of the pound.In a letter sent to UK dealers - since confirmed to Amateur Photographer - Olympus's marketing general manager Mark Thackara states: 'As you probably know, the Pound has depreciated significantly against the Euro in recent months. Directly competing against the Canon EOS 40D and the Nikon D300 the Olympus E-3 is one big, bad shooter: Even for a D-SLR, it's pretty huge. But with girth comes superb image quality and a hearty assortment of features, such as a swiveling LCD, live view, two in-camera image stabilization settings, and an extensive menu system, to name a few. Olympus E-420 is an update to the E-410 bottom-of-the-line dSLR, and features a built-in wireless flash controller.
