Last year I had the opportunity to teach English to 40 police officers in Bao'an district. This was the entire foreign affairs department of the district's public security bureau. The training center's staff was instructed to teach from Olympic Security English by Wang Sheng'an. This is apparently the official handbook for China's police to learn English. The small textbook covers topics ranging from lost tourists and missing property to natural disasters and terrorist attacks. Unfortunately, I found it rather lacking. The book is filled with out-dated English and rather dull dialogues. One of the major problems I found was that all the foreigners in the situations were extremely honest idiots--they easily broke down and confessed their crimes. One of my favorites is the chapter on "How to St

70 people to carry Olympic torch in Delhi: IOA

January 1 of 2008 meant the full thrust of the rigorous presidential elections in America and more importantly, the Beijing Olympics. The Olympics, which occurs every four years is an event that the host country prepares for years before the dawn of the Olympics. To mark the beginning of the Olympics is the infamous torch relay race. The ever-burning flame is to symbolize the torch of the king of all gods in Greek mythology, Zeus. Many interesting ways have been used to keep this tradition aflame. In Athens, the flame was transmitted into a radio signal where it was transported to Canada where the signal was received by a laser beam that lighted the torch up. This April, the prestigious Olymp

      Olympic Chances Missed
The torch relay went by my apartment this morning on its way through Shenzhen. I missed it because I had to work. Almost half of my first class skipped out to watch. I really didn't care to watch someone jog a few feet with a torch, surrounded by crowds. What I did miss was my chance at some Beijing Olympic memorabilia. A few days ago they put up some flags and banners along the relay route. I was tempted to swipe them, but decided it would be better to at least wait until after the whole hoopla. When I arrived home around 5:30, I discovered that the flags and banners were already gone. At first I thought the crowds might have taken them home. Then I noticed that the garbage cans were filled. All those nice flags are now in the trash and covered in filth.I guess now I'll have to continue wi

The cute Fuwa group consists of five members according to the traditional five elements: Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, and Nini. Each of the five names is designed to look like a plausible name for a small child, while also achieving a more complex task: when the first syllable of each name is put together, it sounds nearly identical to the phrase "北京欢迎你 Běijīng huānyíng nǐ" which means "Beijing welcomes you".Two of the five mascots represent members of endangered species – Jingjing the giant panda and Yingying the Tibetan antelope. Olympic Groups
The draw occured this morning and Sergio Batista prepares intensely to help Argentina defend their Olympic medal.  For many, this group looks very similar to their Group of Death back in 2006.  With Ivory Coast and Serbia on their calendar, there is a need to be concerned.  Add to that an Australia side that can bring a match-up problem for the Albiceleste.  The Argentines in the meantime know that they have the one biggest matchup mismatch as Juan Román Riquelme announced that he will be in Beijing with the national team along with players like Carlos Tévez, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, and a whole host of others.      Group B sees the European champs face 1996 gold medalist Nigeria along with Japan and perennial contenders in the United States.
