The Story of the Olive Trees
The house is surrounded by olives trees. And we are lucky. Because, you see, there has been a massacre. It happened in the 1980s. A terrible drought took place in Morocco. The watermelons, the zucchinis, the wheat that used to grow in the fields couldn’t grow anymore. People began to flee the countryside to live in the cities. Fez, Meknes, and Casablanca, gained tens of thousands of inhabitants. Those who stayed in the country had to find a way to eat. Their fields were dry. No water, no wheat, no watermelons, no zucchinis. So they cut up their trees, to sell the wood. Their nourishing trees, their olives trees. It probably was very sad. The hills, which were covered with trees, became all empty. But the trees continue to feed the people. From breakfast to dinner, the trees are in the

Olive Oil Bread for Taste and Create

But thereafter there were other things that drew my attention..but then a month further, this loaf of bread for the same event caught my interest, and hence signed in for it.The Taste and Create event is where the host pairs the participants. I was paired with Laurie of Mediterranean Cooking in Alaska . What one has to do is to browse the partner's blog and cook up a dish that caught one's interest..All of the dishes were lovely and new to me..My main criteria was to find a dish which made use of ingredients that were readily available to me...and since I am in a baking spree now I narrowed down to this.Ladenia or Olive Oil Bread was so good and I had to resist the temptation to keep munching on it entirely on my own. How many women today would want to see themselves that way? How many women today find themselves within their house? Many are out earning a monetary check. It is a blessing of the Lord when a man has his wife within his home and if she is a fruitful vine. This fruitful vine refers to childbearing, having children spring forth and growing to maturity. The olive tree reproduces by sending up shoots from its roots. If not trimmed they surround the trunk, just like the psalmist's blessing of many children around your table. Olive trees were a symbol of blessing to the Israelites. When they saw the

The territory is characterized by the presence of century-old olive trees, which probably better represent the Mediterranean civilization. The olive oil produced here is strictly extra-virgin and an essential part of everyday Pugliese cuisine. You will be shown an underground limestone mill or Frantoio, where a guide will explain the way the mill was used and show you the traditional techniques for making Olive Oil. Afterward you will take part in a tasting of different varieties of oils and traditional food.

This is my first foray into the world of “beauty secrets”. Today’s installment is a simple, tried and true edition. Olive Oil. I know you’re thinking, what?! Olive oil? What the hell am I supposed to do with olive oil other than cook with it? I’ve got two things for you right off of the bat: hair conditioner and cuticle conditioner. Wash your hair like you normally do. Once your lovely locks are squeaky clean, saturate your hair with warm olive oil. Let the stuff set for ten minutes and then wash out. You will be amazed at how soft it leaves your hair. Once you’re done with your hair, check out your nails. Notice how your cuticles are softer and your nails have a nice luster to them? You have olive oil to thank for that. OH! If you are inflicted blessed with a baby who has cradle cap, olive oil is your new best friend. Toss out the bottles of pre-made “miracle” cures and slather your progeny’s head with olive oil. Rub it in r

The hidden ruins of a 13th century Olive Mill
Ask around Soriano about ‘Fosso Mulino’ (River Mill) and you will get mostly blank stares. So it is no surprise that after all of these years I had no idea that it existed. Very few people do.One day I was out with my friend (and our contractor) Andrea D’Alessio. He asked me if I had ever been to the waterfalls. My immediate answer was YES! There is a place in Soriano with some beautiful waterfalls that few know about, and I had be [...]

Olive Oil Users Aren’t All Snobs, Some of Us Are Just Misinformed
The olive oil issue returns! but this time, somebody else wants to talk about it. This post is authored by Paid Twice who writes over at I’ve Paid For This Twice Already. If you are looking for bloggers in debt, who are fighting it out and inspiring others to do the same, you should stop by her blog sometime. And yeah… forget nasty comments or be ready to get a taste of some serious kicking skills. I have to admit, when I read the post here a few months ago about buying canola oil and a couple acting superior because they use olive oil, I was taken completely aback. Not that I would ever have some kind of attitude with someone because I use(d) olive oil, but honestly, I never knew that canola oil was as good or even better to use for cooking as olive oil . The whole post, and the ensuing comments, completely surprised me. Basically I had been buying olive oil, extra virgin olive oil no less, for years and years, thinking I was doing something good for my family (and sp

      Olive Wood Crosses of Jerusalem
Olive Wood Crosses of Jerusalem The olive tree is traditionally a symbol of health and peace. The Olive Wood of Jerusalem is the symbol of Eternal Life and it is well known since ancient time. According to religion believe Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, near Jerusalem near an olive tree, some says that this tree still exists today. The Olive Tree grows in the Holy Land and can survive for up to 2000 years. In the Bible, Noah sent out a dove from the ark to find dry land and the dove returned with an Olive branch. It is said that the Dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit. The Olive tree has been highly admired since old times and it is considered as a blessed tree. The people planted olive trees in various parts of the Holy Land to spread its cultivation. The oil from the olives was used to anoint priests, prophets and kings to empower them as well as to pray for their healing. While known for its sturdiness, it is a beautiful wood with grai

      Legend of Olive Tree
The Greek legend tells how Pailas Atenea, goddess of wisdom, caused the olive tree to appear in the Acropolis with a blow of her lance. The Hellenes told the fable of the minor dispute that had broken out on Olympus between Neptune and Minerva, in order to decide who would reign in Attica. Jupiter proposed that the kingdom should be granted to whoever presented the most useful gift for Humanity. Neptune presented a horse as swift as the wind, while Minerva brought a small olive branch, affirming that in the future it would become a strong tree, capable of living for centuries and whose fruits would be good to eat and from them an extraordinary liquid would be able to be extracted for the nourishment of man, soothe his wounds, give strength to his body and light for his nights, since he would know how to keep a small flame lit for hours. Fired with enthusiasm, Jupiter decided that Attica would be for Minerva and that its capital would be known as Athens.

      Indianapolis: Olive Garden
In typical Olive Garden (OG) atmosphere the lobby was bustling with salivating guests longing for their hockey puck to light up in vibration. Once seated we were heartily greeted by Betsy, a new server with a meager 3-weeks tenure at OG. Unfortunately, no raspberry lemonade was to be had as the demand was greater than the supply. The History of Panera: It’s Bread Time & Kalamata Olive Bread Recipe
I was in Panera Bread this weekend getting my favorite soup & sandwich combo, broccoli & cheese soup with their tasty turkey artichoke panini on focaccia bread. Yummm. As I was enjoying my scrumptious Easter weekend meal with some pals, I began to wonder about the history of the chain cafe. So, this Monday morning I thought we’d explore it together. Panera Bread is a chain of bakery cafe restaurants popular across the US. Panera specializes in artisan breads, soups, sandwiches, desserts and happy taste buds. The word ‘panera’ literally translates to ‘bread time’ in Latin which makes the name quite suitable. The legacy of Panera began in 1981 in Richmond Heights, Missouri as the Au Bon Pain Company founded by Ron Shaich & Louis Kane. The company prospered around the east coast of the US and internationally throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1993, Au Bon Pain Co. purchased the Saint Louis Bread Company, a chain of 20 bakery cafes in the St. Louis area which h

Is Your Olive Oil a Wolf in Sheep's Clothing?
Olive oil is fabulous. Let's just get that fundamental truth out there. Good quality olive oil is a delight for the palate. But it is also gaining fame as a "good" oil for your body. A pharmacist friend of mine once told me in no uncertain terms that we would all be healthier if we used olive oil in place of the other common oils in the American diet. The monounsaturated fats that predominate in

      other benefits of olive oil
Don't think that olive oil is used only in Italian cooking :) It is known as a great skin and hair moisturizer. A research centre in Philadelphia has discovered that olive oil is also a natural painkiller. It can help to reduce the risk of heart attack, strokes, some cancers and Alzheimer's disease. Problem is you can take olive oil to cure a nagging headache but you will need about 43 tablespoons of it to match the strength of a regular adult painkiller. That means you may lose the headache but gain some extra pounds!

Different from Italian extra virgin olive oil, L’Oliver Extra Virgin Olive Oil has a fruity but mild olive flavor. More on that in my future posts). The Olive Butter range came out recently, and to be honest, I never would have tried it out if not for a free sample sachet of the lotion in one of the fashion magazines I read. I tried it on in just one application, and I must say, I'm hooked!Description:Palmer's Olive Butter Formula™ has the power to transform your skin. Compound From Olive-Pomace Oil Inhibits HIV Spread
It’s widely known that olive oil is good for your health, but olive skins appear to hold beneficial qualities of their own. A compound in the wax from olive skin -- maslinic acid -- has been found to inhibit the spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).Maslinic acid works by inhibiting serin-protease, the enzyme used by HIV to release itself from the infected cell and thereby spread into the whole body. Scientists from the University of Granada in Madrid found that the compound, which is extracted from dry olive-pomace oil in olive oil mills, can slow down the spreading of AIDS in the body by 80 percent.Nature is certainly full of powerful, potential cures (not to mention preventative methods) for a host of diseases. In the case of HIV and AIDS, though, it is essential to keep your immune system strong because the virus attacks your immune system. Avoiding grains and sugars is one of the primary ways to do this, as sugar immediately decreases the functioning of your immune system

      Olive Oil Attitude
Yesterday, after the fireworks, we made a quick stop at a grocery store to pick up some cooking oil. It was sort of an unscheduled stop (a *scheduled* oil purchase usually gets done through SAM’s club) and since we didn’t have anything else on our shopping list, I just walked to the oil aisle and picked up a bottle of our regular cooking oil - canola oil (also known as rapeseed oil). As I was walking towards the checkout counter, tossing the bottle from hand to hand, I ran into a couple we are well acquainted with. A casual conversation ensued and gradually drifted to the bottle of oil in my hand. Here is a summary of what followed next. Me: Yeah.. just dropped by to pick up this.. canola oil. [The husband and wife looked at each other and then both gave me a look that sort of screamed to me “man, you are really cheap“.] The Wife: You use canola oil !? We use only extra virgin olive oil for regular cooking [now with the “we are richer than you are”

Well friends, I am so thankful for the incredible turn out this week... I hope I will continue to see some of you even after the excitement of Apronpalooza! dies down. I have good news and bad news... first the bad news, my laptop totally died last night. Caput. Crash. Boom. I don't know if it's going to be resurrected...BUT my husband has a computer and he has graciously told me that I could use it when he is not working on it (he works out of our home) to continue the apron fest. His computer is as big and as slow as an ox compared to my Mac (I know... Mac loyalists never die in their loyalty even if their Mac's do die...) so I may be pressed for time to get the remainder of the posts out... However I am going to do my best! If you are a praying person... pray for me!! (and pray for the Mac representative that I will speak to on the phone this morning... I don't do well... I get mad... in such situations I must confess...I know, it's really awful.)BUT without further ado
