      Oklahoma: Recommendation
The State's five-member pardon and parole board has recommended that the life sentence of Norma Jane Lumpkin be commuted to time served. In 1981, Lumpkin took out a $210,000 life insurance policy on her husband and, with the help of a teenage accomplice, beat him to death with a baseball bat. The police found the body in the trunk of her car when she was pulled over for speeding. Today, Lumpkin's supporters say she suffered from "battered spouse syndrome," although a U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has already considered this defense and upheld the original sentence. Some consider it noteworthy that abuse was not a central consideration during the course of the original trial. Although Lumpkin has been "written up" for misconduct three times while in prison, she is credited with having start

Arts Integrated And Learning Styles Go Hand in hand In Oklahoma City Schools
By: Patricia HawkeMany people understand the importance of exposure to the arts. We love art; it is a necessary part of our society. In fact, for every culture and every society, art in some form or another is critical to how we live. For many, many years, arts programs have been cut in Oklahoma City Schools in efforts to divert funds to more pressing subject areas like reading and mathematics. While these are indeed necessary subjects for Oklahoma City Schools students to master, including an arts education in a students learning experiences can do nothing but improve their time attending Oklahoma City Schools, as well as contribute to the amount of success they see as a whole. Most Oklahoma City Public Schools concentrate on teaching students in three ways; by showing them how to do things, by telling them the information they need, or by giving them opportunities to try things themselves (also known as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles). There are, in fact, many learni

      Here Come the Oklahoma Sooners
College FootballBefore the 2007 college football season started, not many gave Oklahoma a chance to win the national title. Talk about a team that seemingly rose from the ashes, this time last year the Sooners were seemingly on the downturn. Their blue chip quarterback Rhett Bomar was shockingly dismissed from the team, who, by the way has himself risen from the ashes, surfacing this year at Sam Houston State. The Sooners fought hard all year without a quality quarterback, they lost a game due to poor officiating against Oregon, but still managed to land a New Years Day bowl game (Fiesta Bowl), only to lose that game in a heartbreaking overtime defeat to Boise State (on a trick play). They then lost their star running back, Adrian Peterson to the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL Draft. So the Sooners entered the 2007 season with a possible New Years hangover, still no proven quarterback and a junior college transfer starting at left tackle. We have to give credit to Coach Bob Stoops, in his

      Oklahoma going to Epcot
The state of Oklahoma will have a booth featured at this year’s Epcot Food & Wine Festival. Although they are saying that Oklahoma is the first state to have a booth at the festival, this is really not the case.  I’ve had the fortune of attending the Food & Wine Festival a few times and I do remember Florida having a booth showcasing citrus and seafood.  So they must mean that this is the first time that a state other than Florida has had a booth. The description of the Oklahoma booth makes it sound as if it is going to be a little larger than the normal food stall installations.  In the past, larger temporary structures have been built showcasing Spain and Austrailia.  What is interesting is that these were located deep inside World Showcase.  The Florida booth was towards the front of the park near the Future World section. Oklahoma moves on from NCAA sanctions (AP)
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Oklahoma isn’t looking for sympathy. The Sooners’ latest run-in with the NCAA is nothing compared to what they overcame last season. This month, the NCAA ruled that the Sooners must vacate eight victories from the 2005 season and cut two scholarships for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years. The sanctions stem from the case involving quarterback Rhett Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn, who were kicked off the team in August for being paid for work they didn’t perform more…

Oklahoma hitches up, moves on from setbacks
By Steve Wieberg, USA TODAY SAN ANTONIO — Adrian Peterson is gone to the NFL. There’s a muddle at quarterback and a couple of sizable holes at linebacker. They’re hardly trivial pursuits at Oklahoma, home to the nation’s fourth-winningest major-college football program and annual designs on a national championship. But they’re conventional. And given the turbulence of the past 354 days, a little convention is welcome. Last August, starting quarterback Rhett Bomar and offensive lineman more…

Oklahoma appeals NCAA decision to forfeit wins from 2005
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — The University of Oklahoma has taken the first step to appeal a ruling by the NCAA that stripped the football team of its 2005 wins and found the university guilty of “failure to monitor” the employment of its athletes. OU President David Boren sent a notice of appeal of those two findings to NCAA President Myles Brand. Boren noted the appeal was limited only to the “failure to monitor” finding and the NCAA’s penalty that forced the Sooners to erase all of the wins more…

      All Night Session...Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma)
Senator Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma)A former member of the House of Representatives, Coburn defeated Democratic Congressman Brad Carson in 2004 and is considered one of, if not the, most conservative members of the US Senate.Coburn states he doesn't speak much on the floor about Iraq...as if it wasn't really an issue to him.I find it so funny thaat these people, who are supported by those who want to essentially ethnically cleanse the Middle East are so damn concerned with their welfare.Considering I disagree with almost anything Coburn says, I think he sounds like one of the more sincere and honest of all the Senators in his position, even if I disagree with him on it."What happens if the Levin/Reed Amendment becomes law?""What next when we don't follow through on our moral obligation to clean up a mess we created."

      Oklahoma Atheists Threatened By Christians
Living as an atheist in America is often a lonely experience. However, in many of the more socially conservative areas, we may face far more serious obstacles than loneliness. Identifying ourselves as atheists may bring disdain, even discrimination. Efforts to express our views on religion are frequently met with accusations of intolerance. And then there are the threats of harm to ourselves and our loved ones.We atheists are everywhere. Even in conservative Oklahoma where 95% of the people profess theistic belief, one will find atheists. Sadly, this report by Oklahoma's KFOR NewsChannel 4 indicates that some have been threatened by Christians because of their lack of belief. Is it any wonder that many atheists still do not feel safe to openly admit their atheism? The story profiles Oklahoma atheist, Kim Cole, described as one of a small number of openly atheistic people in the area. Others would agree to be interviewed only if their identity was concealed. Why?"People do have their li
