165 people, 157 passengers and 8 crew members, had to evacuate this China Airlines Boeing plane after the left engine exploded into flames shortly after the plane landed in Okinawa, Japan. There were no injuries reported as the passenger and crew had to get out of the plane by using the inflatable slides. Some of the passengers said that they were unaware that anything was wrong until the were told that an immediate evacuation was necessary while others say they heard the explosion and seen the smoke and fire. Japanese aviation authorities have suspended all 737-800 Boieng planes pending and complete investigation into the explosion.
Friday March 2nd 2007. Woke up pretty early after a reasonable nights sleep in my bed box, which was only interspersed occasionally with the roar of un-muffled motorbikes and trucks rolling past the window. We traipsed out of the hostel to be greeted by grey skies, grey skies, and more grey skies. No drama's though, we were of the opinion that maybe it'd clear up. Cruised past the rentacar shop and picked up our sweet ride 'goldilocks' that we'd arranged yesterday, then it was off to the port to catch a 9:00 ferry for Tokashiki Island and some beautiful beaches.At 8:58 when the ferry wasn't moving we checked our papers and discovered that the boat we were on wasn't actually the 9:00 ferry, it was the 10:00 (that happened to be going to the same place). But hey, whatever. Here are the photos I promised in my previous post from Iriomote Island, one of the islands of Okinawa. The photos date back to September 2002 and were taken during the Shichi Festival.We spend about 10 days at Okinawa and we visit a total of six islands. First we flew from Tokyo to Naha on the main island of Okinawa (Okinawa-hontoo). We only spend the first night there and the night before we flew back to Tokyo. The other islands we visited were Zamami-jima, Ishigaki, Taketomi, Iriomote and Hateruma, the most southern inhabited island of Japan and much closer to Taiwan than to mainland Japan.It was an excellent holiday, with nice sightseeing, nice food and drinking, interesting culture etc..., a nice mix of activities and relaxing. We also liked the people. Way less stressed and much more relaxed than on mainland Japan. They know how to party and they like drinking. While in my hotel here in okinawa I have been swamped by news papers and magazine articles with different restaurants and places to eat.
