      Offsetting democracy
Kevin Smith The Green Left Weekly - 14 March 2008 Original URL Carbon trading and offsets distract attention from the wider, systemic changes and collective political action that needs to be taken in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Promoting more effective and empowering approaches to climate change involves moving away from the blinkered reductionism of free-market dogma, the false economy of supposed quick fixes and the short-term self-interest of big business. The concept that underpins the whole system of carbon trading and offsetting is that a ton of carbon here is exactly the same as a ton of carbon there. That is, if it’s cheaper to reduce emissions in India than it is in Britain, then you can achieve the same climate benefit in a more cost-effective manner by

      Carbon Offsetting
Whilst we await completion of our resource recovery units ready for the launch of our 'green' policy at the end of the month, I have been looking into other ways of reducing our carbon footprint. Whilst doing this the idea of carbon offsets came up. Basically for the uninformed, this is where we calculate the amount of co2 we are responsible for producing and then pay a third party who use the money to make improvements somewhere else in the world that reduces carbon emissions by the same amount as we are putting out. There are a number of different companies that will do this for us, the thing that is annoying me is the fact that the british based companies charge between £6 and £20 per tonne for this service, yet a number of American based firms can provide the same service

      Ferry offsetting for green Brits
If you are thinking of retiring to France but are concerned about the impact that travelling back to the UK to see family and friends may have on the environment, fear not. It seems that the UK and France’s dedication to staying green is here to stay - with those crossing the Channel now being [...]

Child Labour is Offsetting Prince Charles' Carbon Excesses
Turns out the Prince of Wales is increasing child labor in India to offset his carbon footprint. Way to go, Charlie!!!   I'm sure AlGore is proud.    The ‘carbon offset’ child labourers Indians work off West’s holiday guilt Dean Nelson in Delhi Pumping furiously on a foot treadle in the afternoon heat, six-year-old Sarju Ram is irrigating her impoverished family’s field, improving the crop and – without knowing it – helping environmentally sensitive holiday-makers assuage their guilt over long-haul flights to dream destinations. But Sarju and her four brothers and sisters working flat out in a clump of trees that provide scant shelter from the sun illustrate a growing argument over claims that British environmentalists’ efforts to curb greenhouse emissions are inadvertently fuelling an increase in child labour. Sarju’s family is a beneficiary of Climate Care, an organisation that helps some of Britain’s leading public figures and compani

SAUDI ARABIA: OPEC sees oil prices offsetting weak dollar
The surge in oil prices to record highs will shield OPEC nations, some of which peg their currencies to the US dollar, from current dollar weakness, a Saudi newspaper quoted OPEC sources as saying on Saturday.OPEC members have no immediate plans to hold consultations on a rise in oil prices to record peaks above $82 a barrel last week, al-Riyadh newspaper reported, quoting unnamed OPEC sources it said were well-informed.An OPEC source told Reuters on Tuesday ministers would hold consultations if oil prices stayed over $80 a barrel for 15 to 20 days."The decline in the dollar's exchange rate had an impact on OPEC member states' revenue ... But the rise in crude prices can help overcome this decline in revenues and ensure continuity of energy investments planned by these states over the next five years," an OPEC source said, according to al-Riyadh.The U.S. Federal Reserve's decision to cut its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points last week helped drive the euro to a record high

      Offsetting Your Carbon Footprint
Eureka! Offset your emissions. The other day I received an email from Rod “CEO” Cuthbert about an article he came across in the UK’s Guardian Unlimited. When I went to the website I found that the second article on the page (between Iran’s suspension of a sailor’s release plans and the new MC Rove) was about the UK’s carbon emissions. The article talked about the rise in carbon emissions in the UK and that the 1.25% increase was “worrying and that the figures underlined the importance of efforts to tackle climate change both from government and wider society”. Rod’s point was simple: Carbon emissions are headline news. This is typical now, it’s a topic that’s rarely off the front pages of the major dailies. Climate change, or global warming, is the changing of our global climate due to the build up of carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. Is it happening? Yes. For example: 2005 was the hott

      Carbon Offsetting
With all the current talk of carbon offsetting, and the amount of travel I will be doing this year, I decided that it was about time for me to have a look around at what I could do to help. There are so many sites now where you can offset your carbon emissions and find out general information, you can even buy gifts for friends and family to help them offset their emissions, most sites provide calculators so that you don't have to work it all out for yourself. On Climate Care you can purchase a unique wedding gift that will offset emissions for 150 guests and the happy couple’s honeymoon flights, it costs £110. I was pleasantly suprised to find that it will cost me just under £15 to offset the trip that I'm making to Trinidad and Tobago later in the year, however, all the sites I found seemed to offer calculators to offset flights, driving and the emissions from your home but nothing to work out what I will need to do to offset any damage I'm am doing by going on a cruise. Offsetting splits the green movement
Political activists naturally balcanize and the growing green movement is no exception. Serial corporate office invaders London Rising Tide (LRT) today occupied the CarbonNeutral Company which, among other things, provides offsets to its clients. LRT believes that offsets are damaging because they are a moral hazard (encouraging people to continue their indulgent behaviour), the schemes are corrupt and because projects are often poorly designed and cause more harm than good. The activist group is certainly not alone in this opinion. Offsets have recently come under another round of criticism from more mainstream quarters, including the New York Times and the RSPB. It does seem that they have a point. Offsetting reduces environmentalism to another item on the shopping list. In an extreme example, Land Rover last year opened a scheme with Climate Care, one of the CarbonNeutral Company’s competitors, for purchasers of new Land Rover SUVs to offset their first 45,000 miles. And you can f
