LONDON — HSBC Holdings, Europe’s biggest bank, said on Monday that a recession in the United States was “increasingly likely” because the housing market would continue to deteriorate into next year. The London-based bank put aside $3.2 billion for bad loans in the United States in the first quarter, in line with its expectations, and said that the consumer finance business in America

Apparently, a lot of companies. According to a recent article in the New York Times, individuals and corporations have spent over $54 million dollars last year on carbon offsets, which are credits towards tree planting, wind farm projects, solar plants, and other eco projects. This figure is likely to double next year, with the rising awareness and popularity of the "green" cause. Major corporations like GE, Bank of America, VW, and Dell offer offsets with the purchase of their products. With the growing popularity, skeptics are beginning to ask questions. Who are these little known carbon offset companies? Is the money going to good use? Is this really offsetting carbon in the atmosphere? How is that measured? The FTC, which regulates advertising claims, recently began hearings on the "gr
The powers that be at Delta Airlines, have come up with a carbon offsets program that passengers and fliers can take easy advantage of.
Basically when a customer books a flight at the airlines website Delta.com, one is offered the option of buying carbon offsets right at booking time. The price per roundtrip ticket is a modest $5.50 and this money goes to the environmental organization called Go Zero.
Delta is the first U.S. airline to offer carbon offsets to fliers.

Tesco today scrapped plans to sell retail offset packages. The supermarket giant’s reason was that the public seems to have become disenchanted with offsets – partly due to scepticism about the quality of non-regulated schemes, and partly because many campaign groups now flatly oppose offsetting on moral grounds. The industry is portrayed as a bunch of sleazy profiteers, and Tesco does not want that brand risk.
Tesco’s decision does not reflect an industry facing imminent extinction. In fact, it is just getting started. Last month Carbonpositive reported record trading volumes on voluntary emissions credit exchanges. These sales feed the retail and non-regulated wholesale markets and demonstrate that more people are still choosing to buy offsets.
But the main reason why offsets purchased in the West will continue to fund projects across the world is the growth of the regulated market. As new industries are brought into the European Trading Scheme, the growth in the market for cre
From The StarLONDON–HSBC Holdings, Europe's biggest bank, posted higher first-half profit and struck an upbeat tone on the global economy yesterday, despite a big rise in bad debts linked to its problems in the United States housing market.HSBC, which blamed bad U.S. mortgage loans for its first-ever profit warning earlier this year, said pre-tax profit rose 13 per cent to $14.16 billion (U.S.) in the six months to June 30, boosted by strong growth in Hong Kong, Asia-Pacific and record profits from its investment banking arm. That was ahead of an average forecast of $13.27 billion from a Reuters Estimates poll. But the bank said it benefited from a gain of almost $1.1 billion from the dilution of its mainland Chinese holdings and that pre-tax profit was up 5 per cent excluding that gain.London-based HSBC said its charge for bad debts was $6.35 billion in the first half of the year, up 63 per cent from $3.89 billion in the same period last year as it continued to suffer from past loan
You're probably hearing a lot about companies going "carbon neutral" these days. All the cool kids are doing it, and it's even become a selling point for Democratic and Republican presidential candidates.Sounds good, but what does it actually mean? Has everyone just stopped exhaling? Here's a quickie primer on the logic and logistics behind carbon offsets.
I cringed when I saw the President making suggestions for limits on greenhouse gases on the news. I kind of looked at the ceiling, closed my eyes and wondered what foolishness was next. Someone urgently needs to let George Bush know that his acting skills umm sort of suck. Ask him to leave it to the professionals. And its not even like he has enough credibility overall that people would be accepting of this about face on his part. Even the people he is trying to impress, which isnt his traditional base, rest assured, wont be fooled for a second. And those libs arent the brightest crayons in the box to begin with. And if like is said below it is all smoke and mirrors anyway well once again he thinks he can pull the wool over our eyes. Im convinced that human induced global warming is a crock anyway but I just hate it when someone assumes they can fool me day after day. How long until Bush starts buying carbon offsets for Air Force One? ~RJH Washington Post article link Change
As I first wrote about here, it appears the bloom is off the rose in regards of the carbon offset scam. Now congress wants more oversight into this, you can read about it here.
This whole idea of voluntary carbon offsets or carbon credits is a way to get the American people used to paying for their indulgences. Once people get used to this notion that they can live their lives however they want as long as they pay for these credits it won’t be long until these credits become mandatory. This whole global warming fiasco is a political issue designed to tax and regulate you. It is not an environmental issue, it is a political issue.
America, you need to put a stop to this before your every move is taxed.
I’m excited to share my decision to make carbon offsets a part of my backpacking trip around the world. As it becomes increasingly evident the US government is far from taking the aggressive measures it’s citizenry would support, I am inspired by the actions of individuals (such as Richard Branson), cities, states (California), and countries (France) to change the carbon equation. In February, after watching An Inconvenient Truth, I began to recycle again. In April, for Earth Day, I bought compact fluorescent lamps.
I am looking forward to developing a strategy to account for my carbon footprint during my trip. For the moment, I’m entertaining the idea of dedicating 50% of any advertising income from this site to offsetting the carbon emissions of the planes, trains and automobiles I will use. For example, one UK company estimated the cost of an offset for an airplane ride from Washington, DC to Auckland, New Zealand at $32. Given this first flight will likely b
The ongoing story of Al Gores huge energy eating estate gets better and better. Not only does his mansion use 20 times (!!!) as much energy as the average home but his purchase of "carbon offsets" has revealed that he is buying the offsets from a company he started himself. More limousine liberals saying do as I say not as I do. Actually it is even worse than that as he is trumpeting doom and gloom he is drumming up new business for himself. Of course he will be excused for his outlandish use of fossil fuels by the left and the media because of how much he does to "raise awareness" about the global warmign issue. There's a saying I firmly believe in "Think global but act local". Basically Al Gore should, literally, get his own house in order before telling us how to manage ours. ~RJH Bill Hobbs article link The Profit of DoomAs the controversy over global warming doomsayer Al Gore's voracious energy-eater mansion rolls on, there's an angle I think

First do no harm. It's a maxim I try and live by, especially when I travel. I keep my ecological footprint to a minimum—at home by cycling instead of owning a car and living minimally, when traveling by choosing environmentally sustainable activities and supporting local cultures and products so they're not eroded.
So what happens when the act of stepping on a plane itself for your trip has already done so much harm?
I'm writing this aboard a flight from the west coast of North America to Argentina. According to one online calculator, my return trip will generate 2.7 tons of CO2. Driving a mid-sized car for a year in comparison will generate 3.6 tons of CO2.

"Wow, I can actually feel better about my carbon footprint!" So proclaimeth an unknown supporter on Carbonfund.org's website. According to Environmentalleader.com, VW's down with that. The environmental campaigners report that the German automaker will supply the "fund" in Carbonfund's plan to buy and reforest 1,100 acres of the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Louisiana. In case you're wondering how they do the math, "the offsets will be based on the average annual emissions for each different type of model sold in the four-month period." It's not an open-ended deal; VW will cover carbon emissions for vehicles sold from September 1, 2007 until January 2, 2008. But the company invites new owners to keep paying for their guilt environmental impact by continuing the offset arrangement into the new year. In fact, VeeDub's putting a "carbon calculator" on an official micro site hosted by... Carbonfund.org.
