Clear only uses Certified Emission Reduction certificates (CERs) authenticated by the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism. This is the method currently endorsed by the UK government and ensures that every tonne of emissions reduction is actually achieved.

Offsets are in principle a sensible way to allocate funding for clean development in other parts of the world. The regimes that govern the generation of emissions credits for use in the voluntary market have come under a lot of criticism – including in a recent article in Nature – with good reason. It is a murky, immature market and there are plenty of people making dishonest profits. The clearest indicator of murkiness is the widely varying prices in different markets.
Offsets can by definition be generated anywhere in the world. Credits generated by a renewable energy project in India, for example, could equally be sold in Europe or North America. And you would expect prices to be broadly similar - which they are not.
Voluntary offsets that adhere to the Voluntary Carbon Standard cost around $15 per ton over the counter in the UK. Credits that have passed the Clean Development Mechanism (called CERs), which are valid in the ETS, currently cost $25.50 on the Nordpool exchange. In

Buckley Fine Wines, an online wine retailer, based in Oakland, California wanted to offset all (if not most) of its co2 emissions and in order to do this, first they had to find out how much was their annual greenhouse gas output. It took them all of two months to find this out, with the help of FedEx and UPS they were able to determine the energy output of their wine bottle shipments. They then looked into their warehouse and headquarters operations and what emissions were being created there.
In all they pay CarbonFund.org, a carbon reduction organization, $2,000 monthly to offset a great deal of their Co2 emissions and besides being socially-responsible, this also helps set them apart from their competition.

Two of Spain’s regional governments and its capital city plan to plant millions of trees to help offset the impact of the country’s spiralling greenhouse gas emissions, environment officials said on Thursday.
Spain is allowed an increase of 15 percent in its carbon dioxide emissions but the government estimates that it will be facing one of 37 percent in the 2008-12 period. It aims to offset 20 percentage points of that via United Nations-approved clean energy projects in developing countries, and a further 2 points by planting trees.
Some of the country’s regional and local governments are leading the way.

I feel slightly uneasy about carbon offset schemes. I think that they are only part of the solution. I think it’s better to fly less for leisure. Perhaps I am shooting myself in the foot, as a travel business owner. I just don’t feel it’s right to say, just go on flying as much as you like and it won’t cause any problems as long as you always do your carbon offsets. What do you think?

They are arguing about whether carbon neutralizing air travel with companies like Climate Care is good or not. The culture section writes that offsetting trips is bad. Offsetting signals that it is OK to keep on flying and polluting the atmosphere. They also say that there is no evidence proving that offsetting really works. The travel section on the other hand, writes that it is better than nothing to have offsetting for occassions when flying can't be avoided.
