The Slow Offseason and Hot Stove
It's another day in the off-season, and there's not much going on in Baltimore aside from Purple Fever. In terms of baseball, I'm not sure what the hold up is -- whether the market is slow, or the Orioles are now really going to do much else -- however, I think things are moving a tad too slow.Granted, we probably have about six weeks left before pitchers and catchers report, but one must ask thems

      The Cleveland Browns Offseason
It appears the Cleveland Browns have made some important off-season moves. They got a deal done with starting quarterback Derek Anderson for 3 years. Of course this raises questions about Brady Quinn’s future with the team but for a team on the cusp of the playoffs last year they absolutely had to get Anderson signed. After struggling at the quarterback position for years it would have been the height of folly to go into the year relying on Brady Quinn, regardless of his potential, after Anderson played so well for much of the year. I doubt both these guys will be with the team after next year. Odds are Quinn will get enough playing time this year for the Browns to make an evaluation. Anderson stayed healthy all year last year. Chances are he won’t this year. They also signed wide recei

Vikings to Eye Two Stud Players This Offseason
What route will the Minnesota Vikings take when it comes to 2008? There seems little doubt that they need impact players on offense to go along with rookie stud at running back Adrian Peterson, who himself could use more talent around him. The St.Paul Pioneer Press’ Charlie Walters is talking about the team looking at two star players that could come right in and upgrade the Vikings offense right away - QB Donovan McNabb or WR Larry Fitzgerald. Both players would come at quite a cost, as each according to Walters would cost the Vikings up to two first-round draft choices. The better fit of the two would be Fitzgerald, as at 31 years old, McNabb is an injury or so away from calling it a career. Look at Steve McNair in Baltimore. He came to the Ravens with a long list of injuries, stayed pretty healthy for a season, and this year has been on the bench more than the field as he has been hurt a ton. That’s why going with Fitzgerald, who is from Minneapolis, would be a bet

      What an offseason
Hey TSF readers, I am back to lay some more baseball insight into this fine fine blog. Back in July I wrote a post judging the trade deadline deals, and I'm back to look at what has gone on this offseason so far, and what could potentially take place.Santana ManiaWe all know that the best pitcher to throw a baseball since Roger Clemens was in his prime is on the market, but where will Johan Santana end up? This whole situation is about to get very interesting, because not only are the Red Sox and Yankees the only realistic options out there, but no one knows if they're actually trying to trade for Johan or just jacking up the price for the other team.I say that the Yankees and Sox are the only real contenders because unlike anyone else on the current trade market, Johan Santana controls his own destiny. He can veto a trade if the team the Twins agree to terms with doesn't give him the extension he wants (rumored at around 23-25 million per year for 5-6 years). This makes this tr

Reality Bites – The Big Business of Sports; the Baseball Offseason & Fan Accessibility…
While I am here watching the Yankees get thumped by the Indians, I often check out the other blogs out there in the universe, and one of the best out there is the Nats320 Blog done by a Washington Nationals season ticket holder who has unbridled passion for the team and attends virtually every game. This week, he added an impassioned entry to his blog about the ticket availability for the post-season, TV programming and how MLB caters to their supporters, VIP’s, lawyers and corporate partners. I agree with most of he says; however, the reality of sports today it is driven by almighty dollar, big business and not “biting the hand that feeds you”. I work for a defense contractor, and one of the biggest companies in the world as an IT consultant/site director. A few years ago, I was able to attend plenty of Washington Wizards game as fan, sit in a corporate box, eat free food, have all the drinks and have team officials greet us, even though I am nobody. Tony Dungy’s humility in offseason
Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy got his dose of humility in a New York City bookstore this offseason. “Yeah, I was going through the offseason feeling pretty good about everything when my wife and I were in the bookstore,” said Dungy, the man of grace, a Super Bowl ring and now a best-selling book. “Then someone from the bookstore came up to me and said, ‘It’s so good to have you here, Coach Edwards.’ … The Lord has a way of keeping you humble.” Dungy shared a laugh over that with his good friend and former assistant, Kansas City coach Herm Edwards. More important, the moment was the first of many reminders that winning a Super Bowl guarantees little in life, even recognition. The further reminder of that has come in training camp. The Colts may be the defending champions, but they are a very different team from that rainy night in Miami during Super Bowl XLI less than seven months ago.

LeBron James and the Cavs Offseason
The Cavs and LeBron James have entered the off season a little bit later than usual but that does not mean that there is no room for improvement on their squad. Trade rumors are already beginning to fly and many are wondering if Varejao will leave or be offered enough money by the Cavs to stay. Some good news for LeBron James and the Cavs is that GM, Danny Ferry has been given the ok to spend more than they had before on the upcoming season's roster because of their exceptional season. LeBron James will come back next season no matter what happens. We can only hope that the Cavs franchise officials make the right player moves in order to create a stronger squad and compliment LeBron James better then they had this year. LeBron James may be the star of his team but that team must get better if they want to continue to go far in the NBA play-offs.

      Offseason Recruiting - Offense
The most disappointing group on the Fresno State Bulldogs during the 2006 season was their offense. Well truthfully that statement is only half true. The offensive line and running game came through for the Dogs as Brandstater only endured six sacks during his ten starts. At the same time the Bulldogs offensive line allowed the Dogs to average over 180 yards rushing per game. This ended up being a positive aspect to the Dogs offense because their passing game was nothing to write home about. Brandstater averaged 135 yards passing per game, a rate that would be terrible even for the bottom feeders in the WAC. In order for 2007 to be any better the offense will start and end with Brandstater. But the Bulldogs will be losing the one man that made their offense work this season: Dwayne Wright. In order for the Dogs to rebound on offense each player will have to take their game and step it up. Quarterback - Barring any unforeseen circumstances Brandstater will be the starter in 20

      Offseason Recruiting - Defense
Yesterday's blog on Pat Hill and his flirting with other jobs across the nation with respect to college football received a complaint due to the fact that all we seem to be talking about is Pat Hill anymore. Today I will use the rest of this blog to cover defensive recruiting and will not mention Hill's name anymore (for the rest of this blog, not forever). As you can see the picture to the left is Damon Jenkins who was beaten on this fourth and two play for a TD in the third quarter after the refs gave San Jose a chance to change their decision on whether to take a running into the kicker penalty or let it go. (Is that even allowed?) The reason I picked this picture for the recruiting blog is we need some definite help in our secondary. Since McCauley is leaving (although he ended up doing far less than I thought he would in his senior season) we will have to replace him at corner. Losing Simmons will not hurt much, he never seemed to grasp the corner lifestyle in college. Shir

Are the Baltimore Orioles Any Better Right Now? An Offseason In Review...
The baseball season has been over for a little over two months now. Since the St. Louis Cardinals took home the trophy, rumors, talk and transactions that have taken place during baseball's idle time has made this another season upon itself in the game.So alas, we need to need to discuss that state of the Baltimore Orioles in my eyes. We are about halfway through the offseason, and since pitchers and catchers report to camp in February, now is a good time as any to discuss the Birds. It has nevertheless been an interesting off season, not only for the Orioles, but for all of baseball. First off, we remade our bullpen, which was sort of an Achilles heel throughout the 2006 season. Second, and most glaring, we tried to get an impact bat and failed because of the market and the front office's hesitation to bid on the extravagant contracts the marquee free agents wanted. Third, we tried to get a frontline starter, but did not for the same reasons we didn't get an impact bat - money

My Ten Worst Deals/Moves During the Offseason
I'm sitting around at work doing nothing on a Thursday in between the holidays, so that being said, I might as well be productive.Well, I am going to take a look at moves and signings in my opinion that have been the 10 worst. Right now, we have about a little more than 2 months left before spring training and it's a good time to review.I may look back next week, next month, three months, or a year from now and decide, hey I was wrong.*Gil Meche. Ok, he receives a 5 year deal for 55 million. Can I ask why? Is he worth 11 million annually? He's been oft injured and has not lived up to expectations although many in people think he's got good stuff. However, his career record is slightly over .500 and he's never had a breakout season. I know the Kansas City Royals want to compete, but you all could have seriously used your money in other places. I know desperation causes people to do stupid things, but when rational sense is lost I don't know what to say anymore.*Gary Matthews
