The Little Elm Town Council has approved two ordinances restricting where sex offenders can live and gather. It sounds like something straight out of last week’s Boston Legal episode: Council members voted 3-2 to restrict registered sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of places where children commonly gather, including schools, parks, libraries, day care centers and video arcades. The council also passed an ordinance 5-0 that prohibits registered sex offenders - regardless of where they live - from going within 1,000 feet of places where children commonly gather. Town officials say they know of no other municipality that bans all sex offenders outright from certain areas. The key phrase is that the Collin County town’s officials are unaware of any other municipality banning sex offenders from certain areas. Both of these ordinances are ripe for legal challenges. Social networking site MySpace reported on Tuesday that they had detected and deleted 29,000 registered sex offenders from their system, but ask yourself how many sex offenders still have MySpace pages because they haven’t been arrested and registered yet. I’m not sure what I want to do...

MySpace.com said today that they are going to provide law enforcement officials with information on registered sex offenders that are using the highly popular social Web site. Last week attorney generals from eight states demanded that MySpace provide information on the number of registered sex offenders that use the site, as well as where they live.  Initially MySpace refused, citing the US federal privacy laws.  However, Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut Attorney General, said that the company has agreed to comply. Blumenthal said, “Our subpoena compels this information right away within hours not weeks, without delay because it is vital to protecting children,” and that “many of these sex offenders may have violated their parole or probation by contacting or soliciting children on MySpace.” Blumenthal also said that his office will be looking not only for names and addresses, but also for how the sex offenders used the Web site.  They will then cross-refere
