      Rising Acidity in Oceans alarming!
Rising acidity in the ocean caused by seas absorbing greenhouse carbon dioxide could make low-lying island nations like Maldives more vulnerable to storms, say scientists. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is at its highest level in the past 650,000 years, possible 23 million years, and half has now been dissolved into the oceans making them more acidic. Ocean acidification, which is projected to

      apocalypse in the oceans
A terrifying article from Alternet. Meanwhile, overfishing has created some 150 “dead zones” — oxygen-free patches of ocean that can sustain no life — around the world: Some of these patches, Grescoe tells us forebodingly, “are now as large as Ireland.” In search of seafloor-dwelling species such as the trendy monkfish — long ignored, then popularized [...

      Updates, Oceans and Trees
We've spent the last several days moving. Wouldn't you know, the weather has been not so much southern California as it has been freakishly hot Las Vegas, with a kick of tropical humidity. I think today the temps are going back to the normal upper 60's mid 70's range. All in all, it was not a fun move. AND, it was only a small fraction of our stuff. The rest is coming out from Omaha in the ne

The World's Oceans Are Running Out of Fish
Callum Roberts, professor of marine conservation at York University, predicts that by 2050 half the world population will have to go with fish; all that will be left for them may be “jellyfish and slime”. Ninety years of industrial-scale exploitation of fish has led to an ecological meltdown, and whole biological food chains have been destroyed. North Atlantic fish stocks have been in decline

"Eat Your Jellyfish" : A Primer on the Severely Degraded State of Oceans
In 2006 I read a book that changed how I saw the oceans. Carl Safina's book, "Voyage of the Sea Turtle" drove home to me just how much we've lost. For the first time, I really felt robbed and bitter that generations before me had left a greatly impoverished world. The more time passes, the more it becomes obvious that planet Earth really is a closed system. To create more of anything else (people, more luxurious lifestyles) you have to take from somewhere else. Anything you buy, eat, consume, you're taking from someone or something else. It probably is from poorer people elsewhere, but it's most definitely from other species. The more there are of us, and the more materialistic our lifestyles, the less there is of everything else. When simple living advocates remind us to "Live simply so th

This is a race that few outside of SA will likely have heard of, but it's one of the big 2 ultra-marathons in South Africa, along with the 90km Comrades in June. The race, a 56km cruise around the Cape Peninsula, is without doubt one of the more beautiful races in the world, and if you're reading this from outside SA, and feel inclined to take a "running holiday" in the future, next year in April is a good bet - you won't be disappointed, either by the race or by Cape Town! Pliosaur, The Fiercest Sea Monster that Terrorized Prehistoric Oceans
Named by its discoverers as the "The Monster", Pliosaur is the fiercest sea monster that terrorized the prehistoric oceans 150 million years ago.The 50-foot animal was one of the biggest marine predators to have ever swum and would have been able to take on "anything that moved" in the water. It was built for speed and power, and with its armory of fangs would have been rivaled in ferocity only by an extinct shark, the megalodon, which lived about 16 million years ago. Fossilized remains of the pliosaur, which had 10-foot-long jaws, were located on the island of Spitsbergen in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, inside the Arctic Circle. Link

Bottom-trawling: How it works The delegation from New Zealand, whose fishermen are responsible for 90% of bottom-trawling in the South Pacific high seas, said the restrictions would "severely constrain" its fishing vessels. "Because of the cost implications of the necessary research and assessment and observer requirements, it may even have the effect of putting an end to bottom-trawling," it said. The Deep Sea Conservation Coalition, an alliance of leading environmental and conservation groups, welcomed the agreement. Deep-sea Species' Loss Could Lead To Oceans' Collapse, Study Suggests
ScienceDaily (Dec. 28, 2007) — The loss of deep-sea species poses a severe threat to the future of the oceans, suggests a new report publishing early online on December 27th and in the January 8th issue of Current Biology, a publication of Cell Press. In a global-scale study, the researchers found some of the first evidence that the health of the deep sea, as measured by the rate of critical ecosystem processes, increases exponentially with the diversity of species living there.link:- #Seriously... this is a matter of great concern. We tend to take the marine life for granted but this study has really come as an eye opener.

Early Venus Had Oceans, May Have Been Habitable
Venus, not Mars, may have been the most likely planet in the solar system to have also developed life, scientists say.The cloud-shrouded planet most likely started with oceans much like Earth's, which evaporated as Venus heated up, according to new research. The oceans didn't disappear overnight, said David Grinspoon of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.Speaking yesterday at a meeting of planetary scientists in Orlando, Florida, Grinspoon said that preliminary results of new computer models indicate Venus may have retained its oceans for a billion years after it formed, possibly longer.Prior models had indicated that rising Venusian temperatures had turned the oceans to steam within the planet's first 600 million years. The extra 400 million years are even more significant than they sound, Grinspoon added, because early Venus was constantly bombarded by asteroids, reducing the likelihood of life. The new finding suggests that the oceans existed for much longer af

How To Rationalize Cooling Oceans In A Globally Warming World?
It's just a little dip! As long as there is money to be made on global warming, people will find new ways to rationalize evidence against it as inconsequential. "This research suggests global warming isn't always steady, but happens with occasional 'speed bumps,'" said study co-author Josh Willis, a researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "This cooling is probably natural climate variability. The oceans today are still warmer than they were during the 1980s, and most scientists expect the oceans will eventually continue to warm in response to human-induced climate change." This logical fallacy is called appealling to popularity or the 'bandwagon' fallacy. I'll give you some examples. *Most scientists believe human-induced climate change is causing global warming. Therefore, human-induced climate change is causing global warming. *More scientists watch Channel 8 News than any other station. Therefore, Channel 8 News is the best news station. *More people read Scienceblog
